Or are we doomed?

GatoradeMeBitch · 08/05/2015 20:05

It seems I may be able to buy my HA house at a big discount. So there's a bit of ImAlrightJack-itis for me. I could be quite cheerful if I wasn't worried about the vulnerable disabled and mentally ill people I know and love struggling for the next five plus years.

MargoReadbetter · 08/05/2015 20:07

Pfft, Human Rights. That's just so ... leftist. Who needs it when you have 400 years English belonging and history behind you?

It'll be awful.

KingJoffreyFanciesDarylDixon · 08/05/2015 20:11

£8 minimum wage could be good. I work in care though, minimum wage goes up, number of staff on shift goes down, work load goes up, standard of care goes down.

Bet that's true of other lines of work too. Retail definitely.

KingJoffreyFanciesDarylDixon · 08/05/2015 20:12

I'm going to miss Nigel Farage.

His face amused me. Couldn't help but warm to him. He was like an evil Rik Mayall with his bonkers expressions.

TheRealMaryMillington · 08/05/2015 20:16

One of my friends is a bit of a political commentator and he says the Tories will destroy each other now, over Europe especially.

Rabbishes · 08/05/2015 20:17

To add to my previous post, and please don't savage me for saying it, but I'm sort of a tiny little bit grateful to the Conservatives for one of their policies....

I was unemployed and, for various reasons, was more suited to self employment than employment. I qualified for business mentoring and for the new enterprise allowance, both of which helped to me set up my business. The enterprise allowance helped to tide us over until I got established and without it I would probably still be unemployed as I wouldn't have been able to afford to even start my business.

Hillingdon · 08/05/2015 20:20

Why cannot you not state on MUmsnet that you have had some success under Conservatives. Don't let the lefties bullies force you to apologise.

Why only a tiny bit grateful. It sounds like something really good for you

TheRealMaryMillington · 08/05/2015 20:23

There have been schemes like that running since the 1990s, Rabbishes.

Well done on your success!

MargoReadbetter · 08/05/2015 20:51

KingJoffrey - yet VirginCare's profits will somehow keep going up. No tax paid in the UK either.

Queenofwands · 08/05/2015 21:01

I hate the Tories, I hate all of their policies, I hate Cameron....but, and here is my glimmer of hope, I don't think he is evil. Even when using his dead son to support dismantling the NHS part of me believes he thinks he is doing the right thing. I pray that he sees what his policies are doing to this country and changes tack. I am pinning my hopes on the fact that he seemed genuine when he made the apology for Hillsborough, and that his support for gay marriage put principles before political expediency. I know it is desperate but I have genuinely prayed because people will die if they carry on where they left off.

Rabbishes · 08/05/2015 21:04

When so any people are having this and that cut and are being made to feel like scum for daring to claim, it feels like it isn't the done thing to say well, actually, the current system helped me to get where I am now. As well as the NEA and mentoring, the DWP also paid some of my start up expenses under the Barriers To Work scheme such as my first three months liability insurance and initial regulatory fees.

I hope that schemes like this don't get cut as they've helped me get back into work.

foxinsocks · 08/05/2015 21:11

The Tories will in fight - Cameron's biggest job is keeping his own party in line

Labour will get a stronger leader and reform

Higher rate tax payers won't have the top rate increased immediately (Labour would have done this).

The City is happy (for now...)

I think it's no bad thing for the political climate. Let the opposition reform and get themselves sorted. I don't want to pull out of Europe though (nor do most businesses I know) - not sure what they'll do about that.

Queenofwands · 08/05/2015 21:12

Rabbishes, where you the sole earner?

Rabbishes · 08/05/2015 21:14

No, DH is working but his income was covering the essential bills and basic food shop/nappies and that was it. Long term we couldn't manage on one salary without getting seriously into debt and financial difficulty so I claimed contributions based JSA and then went onto the NEA scheme.

Queenofwands · 08/05/2015 21:22

The only reason I ask is that it wouldn't be possible to live and feed children just on the EA. I mention that because otherwise it could feed into some people on here who think the options are there if people on benefits just got off their arses.

Idefix · 08/05/2015 21:30

I think the good thing will be that it will give labour an opportunity to sort themselves out - they need to take a good look at what their priorities are and who their core voters are. The voters in Scotland were never going to forgive labour for their role in the referendum it was crass to say the least and the Tories fate was really sealed by Cameron on the 19th with all that talk of Englishness - there we were thinking he was a unionist.

For Scotland an EU referendum will give the scots the opportunity to call for a another referendum on devolution - they strongly in support of remaining in the eu.

Five years of this and increased poverty and suffering for the poorest parts of our society, decimation of the nhs, education and hopefully a stronger more genuine Labour Party has a chance of getting back in.

Some good may come of this...

LotusLight · 08/05/2015 21:33

Most people are delighted. The people have spoken. This is democracy. We are delighted to hav a Tory Government at last.

As for how it will benefits mumsnetter this summary from earlier on the thread is a good start:

"The tax-free allowance will increase from £10,600 to £12,500.
Minimum wage up to £8 per hour within 5 years.
Some help for first-time buyers.
The changes that have allowed people to access their pensions will stay (Labour might have changed that back).
Double the amount paid for weekly childcare if your children are 3-4 years old.
A freeze on commuter fares for 5 years.
Just trying to pick up on some things that might be encouraging for lower earning working people. Probably waste of time"

Queenofwands · 08/05/2015 21:44

The majority of people in this country did not vote conservative. The people have spoken but they have not been heard.

SwedishEdith · 08/05/2015 21:53

There's no Esther McVey?

MargoReadbetter · 08/05/2015 22:08

Nope. Sweet, isn't it.

Theimpossiblegirl · 08/05/2015 22:11

Under the Tories, my family is actually better off but I didn't vote for them because I care about other people, education and the NHS.

I have felt really saddened today that so many people are selfish and can't see beyond their own bank accounts.

minouwasminou · 08/05/2015 22:39

I would say that we're alright too, but we're not - I'm sickened with worry for the poor, the vulnerable, the old, the young.

Been on the verge of tears all day.
I know we need thriving businesses etc etc, and that's great. However, people are going to die needlessly, children will have their academic hopes dashed, I worry about leaving Europe.

ThisFenceIsComfy · 08/05/2015 22:46

Well my DP will benefit from the 40p tax being set at £50,000 now.

That's it for me I'm afraid.

Labour does need to have a long hard look at where we lost votes and why. I don't mean just Scotland. Why can we never make gains in the blue belt southern England?

I have my own ideas but I'm not sure of a solution.

All I know is that an EU referendum and a vote to leave would be disastrous and I think Cameron knows it.

Sixweekstowait · 08/05/2015 23:05

Thisfence- the one thing that cheers me up is that the Tories always destroy themselves over Europe and sex scandals . Despite all the euphoria over the result, he does not have a proper working majority ( which for the Tories means a majority greater than the numbers of the swivel eyed) his right wingers will soon start shrieking about the referendum which as you say he probably doesn't want. Neither do most British businesses. But the right will push on this and threaten to withdraw support for something else and it will all implode - well, a girl can dream can't she?

Sixweekstowait · 08/05/2015 23:07

Well lotus light, if you believe all that.....
