To be annoyed at joggers

Walking along with dh the other evening, we heard someone shout 'excuse me' from about 10 feet behind us. Turned around to see a jogger bearing down on us, not slowing or changing course, obviously expecting us to step into the road as it's a narrow footpath, so she doesn't have to break her stride.
AIBU to think that if she wants to run on public footpaths, it is her responsibility to run into the road to overtake people, rather than just shouting and expecting others to make way?

In general YANBU - the overtaker should make space to overtake, not the slower people.

Were you walking side by side? If that were the case then maybe it's not so unreasonable to be asked to walk in single file for a second so she could get past.

We were walking side by side, but the path is very narrow. I doubt that she would've been able to pass if we'd all stayed on the footpath, hence why we moved into the road. A bit like thinking of a witty retort 5 minutes too late, I'm now wishing I'd stood my ground and asked her if she was shouting at us.

Presumably if you were side by side, you could have changed to single file and no one would have had to stand in the road?

When I'm running I try and avoid running onto the road as it throw my stride and I could go over on my ankle, therefore if two people are walking side by side then I will call "excuse me" in plenty of time. The footpath is there for me too, I'm just moving a bit quicker than the walkers!

Oh come on, you should have moved so you were single file! Surely that's just sensible, then no one has to veer off the path

I fail to see what the runner did wrong, they alerted you to their presence and asked for room to pass. I don't want to break stride when I'm running either, that's fairly understandable I think and certainly in the scenario you describe there shouldn't have been any need for the runner to slow or stop.

If there was room to walk side by side there was room to walk single file so she could pass.

You were walking side by side. Go single file. Slow down / stop for a second if it's easier.

YABU. You could have easily moved to single file for a couple of seconds. The worst people are the ones who walk 6 astride, can see me running up to them and make no room at all. That drives me crazy!

You were walking two abreast, that means there was clearly room on the path for two people and you didn't need to walk into the road. You could have just moved in front or behind the other person for a couple of seconds, to allow the jogger to pass

No we didnt have to move into single file, we had to move into the road, as I said above. The path was wide enough for a couple to walk close together, but not wide enough for someone to run past without going into the road. I am not annoyed at all people who run, just this one incident. I found it rude to be shouted at, and not thanked after moving into the road.

I sympathise with the OP. In my local park (Parc Monceau) I have witnessed several accidents where joggers knock down pedestrians - including my own DD - and the joggers behave as if they had priority over pedestrians. They don't!

But you could have walked in single file and she could have slowed to pass you. And no one in the gutter, surely?

Well, I think YABU. If you could walk side by side you almost certainly did not have to go in the road for someone else to pass. You could have both stepped to one side and waited while the runner passed. Much less hassle and impact for walkers to stop than runners.

When I am out walking I will step aside for bikes and runners very happily because I know how much easier it is for me to stop than them.

I'm pretty sure if they were loud it was so they could be heard, I have had the same problem with people not hearing me.

I have been running for years and have never witnessed a runner knocking down a pedestrian That must be a pretty speedy runner......

Depends upon the width of the footpath whether it was reasonable to go in single file. There are some around here that you can walk two abreast on if it's someone you know well but there would be an invasion of personal space if you didn't.

Yes it is. Ditto for cyclists who use pavements. I am a 'jogger' and I would always go in the road assuming it was safe to do so. However I don't see her shouted request as being all that unreasonable and I am not quite sure why you have taken such offence.

OP was very unreasonable or thick to generalise from the particular.

What speed do you have to be going at, to have to go into the road. I walk quite fast, do I qualify?

Sorry, I still don't understand how a path is wide enough for two people two walk side by side, but not wide enough for one person to walk and one person to run side by side
Unless you are saying the runner was significantly fatter and wider than you?
