To wonder what the scots are thinking

Ruperta · 07/05/2015 23:14

If the exit polls are to be believed then tge Scots will have massively turned out in favour of SNP. This is less than 12 months after voting no to independence.

Why then vote SNP? Have they shot themselves in the foot or are the Scottish going to be protected from the welfare cuts that are going to be imposed on us? Are there NHS and education budgets more protected? Honest questions as I'm very confused!

Feeling very disappointed

In some ways it shows strong support for devo max, ie SNP representation but within the eider UK.

I'm not sure this (projected) result would repeat at a neverendum, I hope not anyway.

OneNight · 07/05/2015 23:20

Scots are not some homogeneous mass Ruperta so many of them will be thinking different things tonight. One thing that I think you can guarantee though is that the streets in Scotland will be quiet tonight because whatever their views they are as engaged in this as anyone.

SunshineAndShadows · 07/05/2015 23:23

Because the SNP have policies on a diverse range of issues not just independence and Scots in favour of Devo max may still agree with those policies but not want to separate from the rest of the UK with the concurrent currency and EU issues this would create

browneyedgirl86 · 07/05/2015 23:23

I haven't voted the snp.

I think some people are voting because they want independence, some of the people I know refuse to accept the referendum result and think this is a way of getting another referendum.

The consensus I also seem to be getting from some is that it's aceY to keep the Conservative out. I personally think the first is more likely. (Or seems to be with people I know )

Silverdaisy · 07/05/2015 23:23

Those that voted no or yes in the referendum, see the general election differently. As they should do. Not all no voters wanted Tory or labour government.

FoamyOne · 07/05/2015 23:24

I voted SNP, and I voted Yes at the referendum. But actually I'm not wedded to the idea of independence - a federal UK would be my ideal. I love the SNP's brand of socialism, their vision for society, their competence (at party leadership level). I feel a million miles removed from English politics - who are all of these people who think that leaving the EU is the way forward? Why on earth are so many people voting for UKIP? The status quo is not acceptable to me, and if we are not (it turns out) really being offered an alternative, then independence and forging our own path is far preferable to nothing.

browneyedgirl86 · 07/05/2015 23:25

whoops I meant a vote to keep conservative out.

Sorry for typos!

YANBU

AgentProvocateur · 07/05/2015 23:27

Scots aren't one homogenous mass. And thers more to the SNP than independence.

There's quite a lot of politically ignorant posters out tonight.

2rebecca · 07/05/2015 23:31

The. Snp want to keep private companies out of the nhs, don't want academies in schools just local authority schools, are opposed to TTIP have a moratorium on fracking and opposed to tuition fees and have got health and social services working together. They are more left wing than labour and that is why people vote for them and why I don't understand people saying the snp getting seats rather than labour will let the Tories in. I didn't vote snp but understand why people did

OneNight · 07/05/2015 23:32

I'm not wedded to the idea of independence either although I very much like the idea of Scotland as a shining environmental example to all of us.

I just don't see from experience that the SNP actually have a vision for society or much genuine competence at party leadership level.

2rebecca · 07/05/2015 23:34

Nicola sturgeon and John swinney are good, not convinced by many of the others

shitebag · 07/05/2015 23:35

I'm thinking whether monthly meal planning would be cheaper than weekly.

Nice to know you care :o

OneNight · 07/05/2015 23:35

I'm sorry 2rebecca but you need to look at what they actually do and not what they 'want'. Words will only carry you so far and this is not a new government.

OneNight · 07/05/2015 23:37

I had much respect for John Swinney. He's been more than a little sidelined though don't you think?

2rebecca · 07/05/2015 23:37

I like to see what I feel like eating when I get home. My life is organised enough.

StatisticallyChallenged · 07/05/2015 23:40

I think it's interesting how low key almost everyone in SNP who isn't Nicola Sturgeon has been in this campaign. You'd barely know Salmond was standing, and I reckon a huge number of people wouldn't even know who the SNP leader in the commons is!

2rebecca · 07/05/2015 23:41

I don't understand your point. We have no tuition fees and no private companies in the nhs and no fracking and no academies, SATs or free schools. They are quite good at doing what they say. Far more than labour who started privatising the nhs

museumum · 07/05/2015 23:44

I didn't vote snp but frankly labour have been pretty useless in opposition. I reckon many expected England to largely vote the Tories in and so were thinking about who they want to send to Westminster in opposition and feel their snp candidate would make a better opposition mp than their labour candidate.

OrlandoWoolf · 07/05/2015 23:45

We have no tuition fees and no private companies in the nhs and no fracking and no academies, SATs or free schools

So really how much does the Government in Westminster affect your policies on education and healthcare?

But you have been able to vote on a Government which has a massive effect on policies in England. But not on you.

StatisticallyChallenged · 07/05/2015 23:46

How are you defining "no private companies in the NHS" out of interest 2rebecca?

highriggs · 07/05/2015 23:49

And how many college places have been cut Rebecca ?

OneNight · 07/05/2015 23:50

Very purposeful SC. Lots of media consultants etc.

I'm sorry 2rebecca. This is a govenrment that has been in power for 7 years. (Seven Years!) What redistributive policies have they actually introduced in that time?

Behooven · 07/05/2015 23:51

2rebecca, no tuition fees? Naive much?
Who exactly do you think pays for stuff? The answer is the taxpayer - there is no such thing as a free lunch just ask the thousands of people hoping to get into fe colleges but there are no places for them because of the cuts!
