To find Shop Assistant's 'Oh, I know your address now, maybe I'll come round for dinner later' a bit disconcerting?

Shopping earlier in Holland & Barrett, got to the point of paying and Shop Assistant asked the usual 'do you have a rewards card' - I do, so it was duly scanned - at which point he read over the till screen then looked to me and said 'Oh, I know your address now, maybe I'll come round for dinner later'

It seemed such a random comment (although I was buying food stuff so maybe that's where it stemmed from?), I was quite taken aback tbh. It is possible I am a little over-sensitive about personal details due to past experience with mildly stalker-ish behaviour. AIBU to have found this comment a little creepy? And to wonder if it is usual for shop floor staff to have access to this kind of information at the point of sale?

YABU.

Harmless comment. Small talk.

You are massively over thinking.

MrsTedCrilly · 07/05/2015 20:18

YABU, but understandable with your previous experience.

AliceLidl · 07/05/2015 20:18

That does sound a very strange comment. It probably was meant just because you were buying food, but I bet he thought it came out sounded wrong as well, and not as he intended.

I didn't realise scanning those cards brought up your address.

squoosh · 07/05/2015 20:18

I think it's a weird thing for him to have said. The level of weird would depend on his tone and delivery.

Jokey - laugh it off

Said meaningfully with deep intense stare - move house.

BestZebbie · 07/05/2015 20:19

Comment: Almost certainly totally innocent eyes-to-mouth-without-passing-through-brain-error, but unprofessional and vaguely threatening in a balance-of-power type way.

YANBU to find it "a little creepy".

threenotfour · 07/05/2015 20:19

Don't worry about it. Yes it is usual for shop assistants/customer service assistants to have this information. That sounds like small talk with a customer to me.

MrsNextDoor · 07/05/2015 20:22

YANBU. Small talk or not, he needs to learn that this is not done. Contact management and tell them what he said...so they can retrain him.

Doobigetta · 07/05/2015 20:23

I don't know what it is about Holland & Barrett staff, but ime they are always rude and lacking in social skills.

AGirlCalledBoB · 07/05/2015 20:23

It sounds like harmless small talk to me and as if you are over thinking it, understandable.

KillmeNow · 07/05/2015 20:23

Given you have a past experience it is understandable to be wary of unexpected remarks like this.

But I think that he was just making small talk with you. He probably just expected some retort along the lines of "okay but you are doing the washing up" kind of nonsense.

Or he forgot himself and let his mouth run away with his thoughts. I once told a caller with the same surname as me that I would look her up on the family tree.Shock
I had no such intention and promptly forgot her details once the call was finished but I startled myself with that little gem.

squoosh · 07/05/2015 20:25

I'd hate to be the object of a Holland & Barrett staff members affections, they'd shower you with kelp tablets and protein powder.

Someone from Boots or the off-licence would be much better.

QueenBean · 07/05/2015 20:25

I could easily see a thread on here "omg, I am so embarrassed - I was at work today and not really thinking, accidentally said to a customer 'oh I know where you live, I'll come around for dinner'"

They probably feel like an absolute arse, you don't need to read in to it

Feminine · 07/05/2015 20:25

Yes, where do they get their staff?
I am constantly amazed at the amount of rubbish staff they seem to acquire.

HeyDuggee · 07/05/2015 20:26

I'd be really creeped out and probably demand to unsubscribe then and there (requiring him to get his manager and explain why I was demanding this)

MagpieCursedTea · 07/05/2015 20:29

YANBU it sounds creepy but as Queen said, it was probably just a silly comment that they feel quite embarrassed about now!

Feminine · 07/05/2015 20:30

Come on hey it's not a serious crime.
Poor guy probably got bored with the constant scanning of TVP

NorbertDentressangle · 07/05/2015 20:33

He probably said it without thinking and is now kicking himself and thinking of posting on this thread ....Did I Really Say That?

AlpacaMyBag · 07/05/2015 20:34

I can imagine that it was small talk that came out wrong. But it would also give me the creeps, YANBU.

I never thought about it but now that you mention it, it's not unusual for staff to have access to this info at POS.

Winterjoy · 07/05/2015 20:43

Ok, mixed bag then, possibly a bit UR, must try to be less anti-social!

Bit of a drip feed now (sorry!) but this is the second time this has been said (minus the dinner part, first time). I think it might be more a 'says it regularly to customers in response to scanning card' (maybe can't think of other small talk to fill the small gap in time caused by waiting for card, scanning, handing back etc?) more than slipped out without thinking. Just seems a strange thing to point out, wrote it off the first time but wanted second opinions this time!

It was the access to the info that jumped out at me - I have in the past worked for three retail companies that have 'points' cards, and when scanned they would simply register the points, at no point did I get any customer info on screen. Hey ho, I guess things have changed in the last few years.

I don't know specifically about Holland and Barrett but no way do most loyalty cards show your address when scanned at the tills.

Rivercam · 07/05/2015 20:51

I would find it weird as well. I hate it when cashiers say 'see you later' as a goodbye 'greeting'.

By the next customer he'll have forgotten what your address was. More so if the next customer was an awkward twat.

Just small talk.

pluCaChange · 07/05/2015 21:01

Hmm, time to change your address with the company, then get Creepy McCreepy to scan it one last time, to get themessage you have "moved", then you ditch the card? You're paying for your points with personal data, but the price is getting too high for you, it seems!

I thought the Data Protection Act was quite clear about only using data for the purposes specified! Having it appear on POS terminals is a bit beyond!

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 07/05/2015 21:04

No under your circumstances ynbu.
Yes it probably was an innocent harmless comment but people don't know shah people have bed. Through in the past or what these harmless comments do to people
