To think that DP's EDL-member friend should learn how to use English correctly?

This is probably going to make me sound like an insufferable twat Grin

DP has a friend who has recently joined the EDL. He has their logo tattooed on his moob as a sign of his devotion, which given his self-confessed lack of commitment to anything else in life makes me think he's taking this quite seriously.

We are Facebook friends. I am aware that I can just unfriend him, obviously. The principal of the thing just irritates me. He is frequently sharing EDL posts about 'protecting English heritage' and 'making sure England stays with the English'. The vast majority of these posts feature spelling or grammatical errors or other logical inconsistencies.

For example, recently there was a post about ST George's day, on which the friend commented aggressively against Middle Eastern culture under the guise of celebrating 'Englishness'. When I asked him if he could tell me what part of the world St George came from and what exactly he did for the English, he couldn't answer.

AIBU to think you should be able to back up your 'English only' stance by using the language correctly and having an understanding of English history and culture? Or at least fess up to being a bigot, rather than hiding it behind a somewhat threadbare veil of nationalism?

I don't know why this is annoying me so much. Definitely sounding like a stuffy twat Grin

Big in comparison to their following in the rest of the UK.

Agree that 'think' and EDL don't go very well together...

So my (Welsh) husband living in England is an immigrant then? Maybe even an illegal immigrant? (No visa for him!)

How exciting!

Abloodybigholeintheground · 06/05/2015 01:46

The principle of the thing..... Hmm

DoraGora · 06/05/2015 06:54

I don't think that tribalism has anything to do with logic. I'm sure lots of gang members have trouble spelling. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if people were more attracted to gangs if they have trouble spelling. If you're perfectly capable of independent reasoning then you don't need hordes of lackeys to confirm every emerging brain fart. (No ukip, then.)

Motor got it!

I repeat, I am not thrusting my desire for an English-only England in people's faces and claiming to value English language and culture above other people's right to live.

But yes, gobsmacked by the lack of diversity when I moved here! Even though there is the odd naice village in the area, everyone seems to rage against 'posh' people, non-whites, even tourists because they are not Foresters. They are only the main source of income for the area Hmm

DP happens to agree with the odd nationslist idea - such as thinking Britain should leave the EU. He just has different reasoning to the EDL and to UKIP, thank goodness.

Wait, Britain First is a parody? I've only ever seen racist bile and using dead soldiers to make their points from them.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 06/05/2015 07:57

Britian first is a parody of Britain first.
English disco lovers is the edl counter group

I used to know someone from Gloc who supports the EDL. He used to wear an EDL t-shirt around his town centre to try to start trouble Confused

Then he left his English wife and kids because he met a Thai woman on a 'specialist' website for men seeking Thai brides.

BuzzardBird · 07/05/2015 13:21

Armani I think we must be on all the same FB sites? Women against UKIP is another good one.

SimpleSi · 07/05/2015 13:35

I'll believe that the EDL are celebrating British values & traditions when they form a Morris dancing team.

My guess, one of the Wakefield pit villages?

MrsNextDoor · 07/05/2015 14:11

If my Dh was friends with someone like that I would SERIOUSLY think about leaving the bastard. For real...why is your DH mates with a tosser? It reflects on you...and him.

Buzzards, yes I'm on that one too :)
