To think that DP's EDL-member friend should learn how to use English correctly?

This is probably going to make me sound like an insufferable twat Grin

DP has a friend who has recently joined the EDL. He has their logo tattooed on his moob as a sign of his devotion, which given his self-confessed lack of commitment to anything else in life makes me think he's taking this quite seriously.

We are Facebook friends. I am aware that I can just unfriend him, obviously. The principal of the thing just irritates me. He is frequently sharing EDL posts about 'protecting English heritage' and 'making sure England stays with the English'. The vast majority of these posts feature spelling or grammatical errors or other logical inconsistencies.

For example, recently there was a post about ST George's day, on which the friend commented aggressively against Middle Eastern culture under the guise of celebrating 'Englishness'. When I asked him if he could tell me what part of the world St George came from and what exactly he did for the English, he couldn't answer.

AIBU to think you should be able to back up your 'English only' stance by using the language correctly and having an understanding of English history and culture? Or at least fess up to being a bigot, rather than hiding it behind a somewhat threadbare veil of nationalism?

I don't know why this is annoying me so much. Definitely sounding like a stuffy twat Grin

Not much truck with the ENGLISH Defence League down here in Cornwall, or in the Hebrides either I guess.....although it's pretty monocultural down here, I haven't come across much overt racism- more anti English sentiment (in a general, not a personal way). However, XP says he has heard quite a few racist attitudes expressed at his old job, so perhaps I'm just lucky.

TwigletFiend · 05/05/2015 20:46

Nope.

I am concerned that so many places in the UK are possible hotbeds of EDL idiocy activity.

If I get a Facebook friend(as opposed to a real friend) who posts EDL, BNP or Britain first stuff then I correct them, give them one chance and then block them.

Quite a few people are taken in by the "Tesco/Pub/Toy shop member of staff who refuses to serve a soldier in uniform in case they offend muslims” myth. There are quite a few “Blond haired, blue eyed child kidnapped by muslim” stories as well. I google any story that seems a bit suspect and if I can find something that proves it’s not true, I post the link.

I've got 2 more guesses?

Somerset or Glos (specifically the FOD).

(Repeating nasty localist prejudices here.)

GraysAnalogy · 05/05/2015 21:16

Genuinely thought the EDL had disbanded

Motortrader · 05/05/2015 21:22

Gardev

On reflection I think you're right. Previously I posted that the OP should ignore the fucker, but those of us who value the Enlightenment and liberal democracy really should stick up for it.

It's just such a PITA to combat bigotry.

Morelikeguidelines · 05/05/2015 21:23

I thought it had been subsumed into ukip. Shows what I know.

Is it Chatham?

NoArmaniNoPunani · 05/05/2015 21:29

They are coming to Brighton again shortly. Dunno why, they have minimal support here. Last time they came, they thought the Brighton pavilion was a giant mosque. Thick twats.

Motortrader · 05/05/2015 21:32

Last time they came, they thought the Brighton pavilion was a giant mosque.

Haha, that's really funny.

bloodyteenagers · 05/05/2015 21:32

Some place in the LS postcode that only the locals know what it's called?

manicinsomniac · 05/05/2015 22:13

Luton?

I was going to say County Durham (not Durham City) but you said Essex wasn't that far off.

YANBU by the way. I don't normally agree with challenging people's English or education but if you're going to be a bigot about Englishness then yeah, you deserve it.

Moln · 05/05/2015 22:23

Tower Hamlets?

RebootYourEngine · 05/05/2015 22:26

Glasgow. Grin this man sounds that thick he probably thinks Scotland is in england.

NorahBone · 05/05/2015 22:55

Have you tried countering with posts from Britian First? (Facebook parody site, for the uninitiated.)
I was going to take a guess at Torbay or the Channel Islands. Because I took your "marginally warmer" comment a bit literally. Blush

SilverBirch2015 · 05/05/2015 22:59

Essex, Yorkshire or Lancashire?

SilverBirch2015 · 05/05/2015 23:03

Isle of Wight?

CarryOnCramping · 05/05/2015 23:04

People like this should always be confronted, if we do nothing we might as well be agreeing with them. You may get blocked but atleast you will have done the right thing, and then you won't have to see his bullshit. Win win.

I have to say though, I'd be pretty concerned if my DP was friends with an EDL member. (Unlikely, he's black). I'm also intrigued as to what you meant when you said your DP was more 'moderate'.

21pc · 05/05/2015 23:05

Norfolk?

carbolicsoaprocked · 05/05/2015 23:12

Definately counter with Britian First posts!
Coventry btw? I've seen a few shares of Britain First posts from there.

Poshsausage · 05/05/2015 23:15

"The principal of the thing "!!
Argh !

They started as a cover for drug deals amongst bored football hooligans and it's all grown out of hand ! They had a great audience being from Luton

Koalafications · 05/05/2015 23:21

YANBU.

My guess is Luton. The EDL are very 'big' there...

feetheart · 05/05/2015 23:24

No, the EDL think they are big here. Believe me they aren't.

feetheart · 05/05/2015 23:25

Actually 'think' and 'EDL' in the same sentence doesn't really work :)

Poshsausage · 05/05/2015 23:30

True feetheart

Yaxley is a twat with an audience

emwithme · 05/05/2015 23:31

I'm going for Somerset. There's loads of the fuckers round here.

(When I moved down from the Midlands 10 years ago I was astounded at the lack of diversity - everyone was bloody white! - and the fact that people used the word "P*ki" in a really nasty tone to discuss the few Asian faces around. It's got slightly better since but not much!)
