I love aldi so much it is saving me a fortune but I get so fed up of having to visit tesco afterwards to get the bits I can't get from aldi (oat milk, wholemeal finger rolls, wholemeal bagels, wholemeal pasta, alpro yogurts etc) it's bad enough dragging the twins round aldi but I hate having to then go to tesco straight after? It makes me want to go back to just shopping at tesco, grrrrrr.......

I do a week Aldi then a week Ocado for this reason.

honeyroar · 02/05/2015 22:41

I agree too, but when I get to the second supermarket and realise that I've got four huge bags of shopping at Aldi and one at the other supermarket, yet spent £60 in both shops I remember why I went to Aldi in the first place!

I bought a huge upright freezer with nine drawers. I now do one huge shop at the start of the month in two supermarkets, then I don't have to go back for a month, other than milk and yogurts etc. it saves loads of time (and money).

AnulTheMagnificent · 02/05/2015 23:42

Today we shopped at Lidl, there are a few items that are better than elsewhere, but only a few, the rest is things that we only buy when we go there that we don't really need. So, we got the washing powder, toilet rolls and butter, then picked up a few other things including a foam thingy for the sun lounger.

Then went to Asda for the things Lidl don't sell which is quite a lot.

blankgaze · 03/05/2015 03:26

Family food allergies mean I cannot ever get a full week's shop in one supermarket.

Glastokitty · 03/05/2015 05:01

Just alternate weeks with Tesco or whatever. I'm in oz and can't wait until Aldi gets here next year?

TheGirlAtTheRockShow · 03/05/2015 05:07

I stopped going to Aldi as its too much of a faff going shopping withDD. Plus they never had everything I needed, and would randomly stop stocking stuff! Yes it's cheap, but I need convenience of online shopping and knowing I can get what I need!

shewept · 03/05/2015 07:06

I never shopped only in one supermarket, before Aldi opened near by. I am surprised people do. Different supermarkets have different products at different prices.

I shop in one at the beginning of the week and one near the end. If I am working alot that week, I do both together.

The more they increase their range, so need bigger stores, more staff etc the more pricese will go up.

Its the whole point of aldi.

Mrsjayy · 03/05/2015 07:10

Does your tescos not do a click and collect you could do it online go to Aldi then go to tesco the click and collect is ready for you. Or you could switch what you buy i suppose get it all an aldi. At last a thread saying Aldi is ok not the b all

Aldi shop once a month and Tesco for the items I can't get in Aldi (Please Mr Aldi if you are reading - GOLDEN SYRUP!).
Spices & specialty ingredients every 6 months from the International Supermarket / Chinese supermarket (get these at lunch time)
Meat/ fish - some Aldi, some from the butchers (lunch time)
Vege - top up shop from Aldi in town (lunch time)

Cooking is seasonal - based around what is in stock & what is in the super saver vege section. We do make a lot of things from basic ingredients, so from your list the wholemeal bagels, finger rolls and pasta would just be made at home from a bag of wholemeal flour, milk, butter, sugar, eggs and salt. All of which are avaliable from Aldi.

Imperialleather2 · 03/05/2015 07:26

I have to.say I agree. I guess it depends how much you value your time over money and vice versa.

Morrisons is definitely cheaper now though.

fulltothebrim · 03/05/2015 07:30

Does anyone actually get all their shopping from just one shop?
I visit loads of different shops in the course of a month.
ASDA for bulk stuff, ALDI for a few items, a fish hut near the harbour for freshly caught fish, an Indian shop for rare spices, an Italian deli for the best olive oil, halal butchers for great lamb, farm shop for local veg.

It's a very 1980s idea that you can do a big monthly/weekly shop in one go.

Luciferbox · 03/05/2015 07:35

Yanbu. I've tried it for a few weeks and I'm not convinced I'm saving much money to justify the extra time. It can take up a quarter of my weekend.

TwiceAsNiceAsIceAndaSlice · 03/05/2015 07:35

But don't you find yourself walking up and down the Tesco/Morrisons aisles like this Shock at the prices? I agree there are things that Aldi don't stock (aspartame free squash for me plus we don't like their peanut butter or spag hoops) BUT the prices I see when I go elsewhere mean I would never go back to shopping in one of the "Big Four".

Unless I win the Lottery. Then it's Waitrose with top ups at M&S all the way Grin

TwiceAsNiceAsIceAndaSlice · 03/05/2015 07:37

Well I save around £100 a month by going to Aldi so def worth it in my case!

Mrsjayy · 03/05/2015 07:40

I would end up spending more if i went to Aldi then another shop i like a mooch round Aldi and get some bits and bobs. Oh it might be very 1980s to do supermarket shop but not everybody has a harbour farm shop time money or inclination to shop from 1 place to another

Mrsjayy · 03/05/2015 07:42

I would love ocado i wish they would come up north i look at their website wishing

fulltothebrim · 03/05/2015 07:46

mrsjayy- priorities I guess. We love our food, it's an important part of our lives. I am happy to give time and money to buying the very best and delicious things for my family.
I prioritise it above many other things, I don't have a smartphone, no Sky TV, I have little interest in shoes or handbags, but I do love seafood freshly caught from cold watsrs.
That's my inclination.

Unescorted · 03/05/2015 07:50

full are you my twin that I never knew I had?

MangoBiscuit · 03/05/2015 07:50

Twice yup, that's me too! Had to pop into Tesco (for some more shopkins Hmm ) and I found myself muttering back at the posters claiming "It's cheaper at Tesco's" with a "No it's bloody not!"

We order our meat in, then do our weekly shop at Lidl. Occasional top up at another Lidl on my way home on a Tuesday. Anything they don't sell and I couldn't or won't substitute for, like size 6 nappies, I order online about once a month. Instead of me having to bulk out meals, stick rigidly to a meal plan, and budget tightly, we can have the odd takeaway and throw some treats in the trolley, and probably still come in a little under budget. The disparity in cost is just too great for me to ever go back to shopping in Tesco's. I feel like they've been ripping me off for years!

Mrsjayy · 03/05/2015 07:51

I wasnt having a dig honestly just not everybody has the chance to shop like you do

bakingaddict · 03/05/2015 07:53

Fullofthebrim it's nice you have the option to do that but I work and commute for just on 60 hours a week so I like the very 80's option of doing all my shopping from Tesco online. I might pop into my local Chinese supermarket for stuff because its still so expensive from ordinary supermarkets but people shop at the big 4 for ease and convenience

fulltothebrim · 03/05/2015 07:54

Don't you ever get days off mrsjayy?

TwiceAsNiceAsIceAndaSlice · 03/05/2015 07:54

I also want to say something to the shoppers with their trollies piled high - such as "go to Aldi and you'd save £40 on that lot" haha but I have managed to restrain myself Grin

fulltothebrim · 03/05/2015 07:55

unescorted- do fancy shoes not do it for you?

fulltothebrim · 03/05/2015 07:56
