To be pissed off with my sonography today

I am currently pregnant with dc3. Having not found out with the other two what we were having, we were determined not to this time either. So despite needing various extra scans, having an amnio etc, we've so far managed to not find out the gender.

Until today. Despite the sonography remarking how unusual it was to have had all these extra tests and not find out, he then went on to say 'if you don't want to know, look away now, because it's very obvious!' So I duly closed my eyes but of course that effing stupid comment means I am having a boy. Which is fine, I am delighted to have a boy and mostly given all the tests, I am just delighted he is ok. But I am bloody pissed off by the unnecessary comment that has made it so obvious when I didn't want to know! Aibu, or just pregnant and hormonal?!

But they didn't give anything away - you just assumed and you have been told by people on this thread that you assumed incorrectly! Honestly, you're overreacting here OP.

VivaLeBeaver · 29/04/2015 18:47

And if they hadn't said to look away and you'd spotted something you'd be equally pissed off. They can't win.

GinAndSonic · 29/04/2015 18:49

I have a ds and a dd and dd was far nore obvious. Ds was pretty obvious too. But with dd they literally started the scan and the first image on the screen was just VULVA Grin

She still likes to rub around naked at 3 years old. Shes an exhibitionist.

Yabvu sonographers do not reveal genders in such a haphazard fashion, if your hcp knew you didn't want to know and told you to look away because it was obvious that reveals nothing about the gender but an awful lot about babies position. They were telling you to look away so your surprise wasn't spoiled. Please stop sulking, you still know nothing.

ThisTimeTed · 29/04/2015 18:50

when I had my scan the sonogropher said it was very obvious what sex baby was so I looked at the screen and it was quite obvious.... it was a girl Smile

same thing with my sisters scan sonogropher said it was quite obvious and it was a boy Grin

I think maybe he meant it would be quite obvious if you actually looked at the screen.

UpSeeDaisies · 29/04/2015 18:52

Don't worry lemon that comment was not meant light heartedly (obviously tone doesn't really come across in text!) and anyway having had enough worries up until now of course I am thrilled that he/she is just going to be ok. Except you lot have now all made me think maybe it is a girl so now I am totally over-analysing exactly how He said the phrase... Grin

Ok so now I am thinking I still have a surprise on my hands. Remind me what they say about trains and galloping horses again... (joke)!

Rereading the poor sonographer hasn't actually done anything wrong at all. She told you to look away as it was obvious. She/he was clearly looking at that area and the baby was presenting well. They haven't given away anything at all. I wouldn't draw any real conclusions from that comment at all.

Minions · 29/04/2015 18:55

I feel your pain. We asked not to find out but the sonographer then referred to our baby as 'she' after telling us to look away from the screen! Of course, didn't matter at the end of the day, our wee girl arrived safe and sound. But bit annoying! Wishing you all the best for number three, boy or girl :)

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 29/04/2015 19:08

I had similar last pregnancy, but a bit different. DS was moving about and I thought I saw a willy, sonographer caught my eye and said "you didn't want to know the sex did you?" which made me think I had seen one after all. I still wasn't sure though as I didn't really know what I was looking at and baby was very wiggly so only a glimpse
It didn't ruin it for me really as I wasn't 100% sure and neither are you.

lemonpoppyseed · 29/04/2015 19:17

At my 20 wk scan, the sonographer wasn't allowed to tell us the sex (we had to wait for the doctor's report the next day). She kept saying 'well, it is obvious' and 'I'll leave the screen on for you to try and guess', so we assumed if it was easy to see, it was a boy. But we couldn't see anything obvious; sonographs are a bit like those MagicEye pictures to me. You can either see them or not. I can't. Cue 24 hours of planning my future with two sons.

My 10 month old DD is bouncing on my lap as I write this Grin

He did keep his trap shut thought. What he said means it could be either. I was also told its easier with girls. So it really could be either.

He needed to tell you when to look away, what would have been a better phrase?

Parkend · 29/04/2015 19:39

I think that being able to see the gender of a baby on ultrasound is an unfortunate by product of the examination and causes us sonographers no end of hassel.

We get badgered throughout the examination when we are trying to concentrate on checking all the anatomy, even though I always say I will look at the end or being told I don't want to know, I think I saw something there.

Pissed off with the sonographer, lovely.

YouMakeMyHeartSmile · 29/04/2015 19:45

The sonographer shouldn't have said anything but agree with PP's. We had a girl first time and were shown her girl bits on the screen. Second time round we went for a private sexing scan and I could see it was another girl as soon as they zoomed in on the area, it was completely obvious as I knew what I was looking at. Sonographers obviously know what they're looking for!

DoJo · 29/04/2015 19:46

The sonographer shouldn't have said anything

But then the OP might well have seen the 'obvious' gender and been even more annoyed. It seems like a 'damned if you do, damned if you don't situation' especially if people are determined to read things into comments clearly designed to be non-specific.

YouMakeMyHeartSmile · 29/04/2015 19:47

Parkend that's why I've paid for sexing scans both times, I didn't want to badger the sonographer at the anomaly scan when they had more important things to be looking at! First time I was asked at the end if I wanted to know so they confirmed it for me, second time they didn't mention it so I didn't either.

Letshavesomeicecream · 29/04/2015 19:47

Not necessarily. It can be blindingly obvious when it's a girl too.

HopefulHamster · 29/04/2015 19:49

My DS and my DD were obvious (I'd looked up how to tell the difference). If I could tell, with no experience at all, I'd genuinely say either sex would be obvious to a sonographer.

YouMakeMyHeartSmile · 29/04/2015 19:50

Yes true Dojo

letscookbreakfast · 29/04/2015 19:50

I don't get how the sonographer has given anything away.

ClareAbshire · 29/04/2015 19:58

I was told to "look away now as it's very obvious" at a growth scan may 33 weeks. Like you I took that to mean a boy, but that baby was a girl.

nemo81 · 29/04/2015 20:26

I don't think the sonographer have it away.

I had my 20 week scan on monday and the sonographer asked before the scan if i wanted to know the baby's gender, i said no but if i spot it myself during the scan its fine. Grin I didn't see any dangly bits so i'm guessing girl. Lol

MegaClutterSlut · 29/04/2015 20:54

I could see DDs bits a lot clearer than DS's on the scan Grin
