to just turn off the tv whenever Nepal comes on and ignore it

It just upsets me too much and makes me feel useless. I've already given a donation.

I just feel like it doesn't affect me so I shouldn't feel the need to see all the brutal details as it doesn't achieve anything.

OP posts:

It feels close to home here. My friend us Nepalese and has family still in Nepal. Last night his father and grandparents who are in theor 80s slept in a field as did his wifes parents and sister. Luckily they're still alive though.

Kampeki · 29/04/2015 07:40

It's a pity you think like that chief. The world will never change if everyone thinks like you.

The situation in Nepal is desperate right now. I have a lot of Nepali friends, many of them live in the affected area. This tragedy is not "just another incident".

These are real people, like you and me. I understand people not feeling able to watch the coverage, but how can anyone say they're not interested?

MarwoodsMate · 29/04/2015 07:42

I kind of know what you mean OP. Some of the coverage is "mawkish" indeed as a PP said. It is upsetting for most people and I get why you turn off the TV. You shouldn't "just ignore it" though - you haven't done this anyway as you obviously know enough about it to donate.

KoalaDownUnder · 29/04/2015 07:42

You don't have to take it all on your shoulders and obsess over it to the point that it affects your day-to-day functioning Hmm

But to not give a toss...you're horrible.

(Not talking about you, OP)

Kampeki · 29/04/2015 07:43

rich, if you genuinely "couldn't care less", what a horrible, callous person you must be. I pity you.

chiefbrody · 29/04/2015 07:45

I am not interested as it does not affect me apart from the fact that yet again Britain is sending money and aid and help..

If we had a disaster would Nepal be sending over money and aid... I think not.

You feel different than me because it has affected you through the people you know.

richthegreatcornholio · 29/04/2015 07:47

These are real people, like you and me. I understand people not feeling able to watch the coverage, but how can anyone say they're not interested?

Nasty things happen to real people all the time. It's very easy not to care by simply having more important things to do.

Kampeki · 29/04/2015 07:48

You feel different than me because it has affected you through the people you know.

No, I feel differently because I have a heart. You sound ignorant and devoid of compassion.

Sirzy · 29/04/2015 07:48

If we had a disaster we are fortunate that we have pretty good infrastructure to cope in the first place. But if needed I am sure the international community would help.

Should we really leave the 3 million children who need help just because they were "unlucky" enough to be born somewhere where such a disaster has struck?

Are we really that insular that we resent help for those who need it just because they aren't British? (Thankfully most aren't but it seems too many are)

Kampeki · 29/04/2015 07:50

Yes rich. It is very easy to be a heartless fuckwit, as you have demonstrated.

If you don't give a shit, can you not at least keep your views to yourself. If you aren't interested, why comment?

KoalaDownUnder · 29/04/2015 07:50

Are you for real, chiefbrody??

Gee, can't imagine why Nepal wouldn't send money to Britain (hint: google their relative GDPs).

It hasn't affected me through the people I know, but like the vast majority of people (thank God), I am actually capable of feeling sympathy for strangers.

whatatit · 29/04/2015 07:51

Take no notice of Rich the tory twat

Sandinmyshoes · 29/04/2015 07:52

It's a difficult balance. It needs to be reported and the images are an important part of reporting the situation and eliciting support and donations and informing the world of how the situation is developing.

What I struggle with is the amount of news agencies out there taking up valuable space in helicopters which could be taken up with aid or medical staff. There should be restrictions on reporters and crew and coordinated sharing of pictures... but then that narrows down the objectivity of the reports coming out.

What's more important? Getting the aid in. But if there are no reports where does the aid come from? As the situation worsened I was certainly inspired to donate more than I had initially, and the nature of my donations shifted to agencies who would provide long term support rather than "first responder" disaster relief. YNBU to exercise your choice to switch it off, but you would be unreasonable if you're suggesting it shouldn't be broadcast.

chiefbrody · 29/04/2015 07:53

How many off the people on here that disagree with me has donated money?

And are you sure that money will get where it is supposed to go?

Or will the corrupt get it?

KoalaDownUnder · 29/04/2015 07:55

Yeah, you're right. 'The corrupt' will get all of it. Halt the donations, people!

You sound really ignorant.

Justusemyname · 29/04/2015 07:55

Why have you posted this? Do you want praise for donating and/or there there Hun it's fine to switch off not your problem Hmm.

Sandinmyshoes · 29/04/2015 07:55

chiefbrody - thank goodness the Gurkha regiment didn't feel like you when they fought by our side in the war. They DID help when we needed them. We owe this country a debt of gratitude, we have more than them.

Sirzy · 29/04/2015 07:57

Sand, I agree about their being too many media in there. I had a similar rant about that on Facebook last night. They really need a coordinated media effort sharing images and reporting from Home Counties.

RitaCrudgington · 29/04/2015 07:58

I work on the principle that my donation (and my political support for parties who will ringfence the foreign aid budget) buys me the right to change channels and not watch things that would upset me to no purpose. YANBU OP.

richthegreatcornholio · 29/04/2015 07:58

If you don't give a shit, can you not at least keep your views to yourself. If you aren't interested, why comment?

Who the fuck do you think you are? Why should you get to dictate what I can and can't comment on?

Kampeki · 29/04/2015 07:59

Yes, I've donated chief, and yes I'm sure that the money will get where it needs to go.

Corruption is an issue in some countries, but using it as an excuse not to donate is just ignorant. I would suggest that you read up on it, but something tells me you wouldn't be interested.

Justusemyname · 29/04/2015 07:59

Britain's are among the missing. Still don't care?

richthegreatcornholio · 29/04/2015 07:59

Take no notice of Rich the tory twat

Awww diddums

chiefbrody · 29/04/2015 08:00

You carry on @rich....................... be a bit boring if everybody agreed with each other.

scarletforya · 29/04/2015 08:01

I am not interested as it does not affect me

You're only interested in things that affect you? That's how a psychopath thinks.
