To ask you about suspicious threads

I probably shouldn't have NC but I have. But I've noticed lately a great deal of threads that for one reason or another just seem odd. I know it's best to report a thread if in doubt but some threads either seem attention seeking or just down right improbable. This seems to be especially rife on AIBU. Am I alone in thinking this?

Smile Orlando.

I have been tempted to name change many times butif I had to name change to start a thread about something that signals to me that I shouldn't start it.

If I felt the need to name change to comment, that tells me not to comment.

GoddessErrata · 27/04/2015 21:58

Been away for a few days but last time I was 'here' there was a thread about a nursery worker who smelled strongly of perfume and the smell rubbing off on the baby... What should the OP do?

Come back today, and there's another thread about strong perfume left on the baby... This time it's by the teenage step daughter. What should the OP do?

Suspicious??

WorraLiberty · 27/04/2015 21:58

Orlando Grin

I'd so love to work at MNHQ

It must be fascinating to look through people's name changes and see who's sweet as sugar in one name, and goady as fuck in another.

Must be a real eye opener.

ragged · 27/04/2015 22:00

There are a lot of threads I don't believe. I half wondered if MNHQ were making things up to stoke up more traffic!

WorraLiberty · 27/04/2015 22:00

I think the OP should get herself on the pill Goddess Grin

balletnotlacrosse · 27/04/2015 22:01

I think a lot of posters namechange to preserve their anonymity and avoid a situation where someone might piece together stuff they've said and work out who they are.
And also, of course, there's the spiteful posters who start raking up every thread a poster has started in the last few weeks as evidence that they're intolerant or goady or somesuch. For that reason, I will switch between a couple of names when starting a thread.

OrlandoWoolf · 27/04/2015 22:02

I think the whole psychology of the Internet is fascinating.

Why people post on forums?
How they present themselves.
Why people troll.
Who the trolls are.
Why there are socks.
Moderation

I love listening to Thinking Allowed. It's exactly the kind of research they discuss on there. MN would be a programme by itself.

ilovesooty · 27/04/2015 22:04

Loads of PBP s returning and as Worra said, regulars under goady name changes I suspect.

Sparklingbrook · 27/04/2015 22:04

I think the AS function is very useful. GFs forget it exists all the time. Grin

OrlandoWoolf · 27/04/2015 22:09

TBF - IloveSooty - at least it's not like a certain teaching forum TES which is dying at the moment and is banning people left, right and centre.

There is lots happening on here.

I NC'd at Christmas as I realised I had given away a lot of personal information under a previous name that even my family don't know about me.

I don't plan on changing this name as I don't plan on revealing anything too personal.

The sock puppets piss me off the most.

magimedi · 27/04/2015 22:30

80% of posts on AIBU are bullshit.

And agree that the place is filled with goady cunts.

CaspianSea · 27/04/2015 22:30

How do you spot a sock-puppet?

Sparklingbrook · 27/04/2015 22:32

Generally, an AIBU starts everyone says YABU then one lone poster you have never seen before suddenly agrees with the OP. Often spelling things incorrectly the same incorrectly as the OP.

Koalafications · 27/04/2015 22:32

They mostly post in the same style as the OP Caspian.

They usually come onto a thread after pages and agree with the OP even though it's clear to anyone that the OP is being a twat.

Koalafications · 27/04/2015 22:33

x-post with Sparkling

Sparklingbrook · 27/04/2015 22:33

With the same theory Koala. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 27/04/2015 22:34

And for good measure they accuse the previous hundred YABU posters of being mean to the OP.

Koalafications · 27/04/2015 22:40

Grin it's almost as if they are really predictable isn't it?!

They also seem to be really good at winding other posters up and getting their posts deleted but not actually straying outside the guidelines themsves... fuckers

Sparklingbrook · 27/04/2015 22:43

There been a lot of 'post and runs' too. Start Hmm thread and stand back to watch. Like an internet arsonist.

Christinayangstwistedsister · 27/04/2015 22:45

What's mouldie gate?

DownWithThisTypeOfThing · 27/04/2015 22:48

Yeah, I'm giving one particular poster the benefit of the doubt because if it is true, it's a really shitty situation. I've offered advice, but if MNHQ were to post right now that it was a dodgy thread I wouldn't be surprised. There's just enough there to make me think it's possibly true but...

Hmmmm, we'll see I suppose.

FallenThroughTheRabitHole · 27/04/2015 22:53

"Like an internet arsonist" Grin

I'm saving that to my Mnet catalogue of terms! Around the time I started the thread there were at least 3 threads that just looked a bit odd, not necessarily because the situation is unbelievable but because as the thread continues the story just doesn't stack up or follow a natural sequence of events.

OP posts:
DownWithThisTypeOfThing · 27/04/2015 22:54

Should say, the convincing one I'm not entirely convinced by hits 3 of my 5 bull shit triggers.
