To ask if you've ever genuinely been amazed or had 'amazing time' - what amazes you?!

So on FB it seems people are easily amazed.
Someone this morning was 'amazed' by their breakfast and someone else had an 'amazing' time swimming.

This caused me to think: have I ever truly been amazed? And the answer is yes. I have. I was amazed when I passed my driving test as I didn't think I stood a chance. Amazed to the point where I was lost for words apart from stuttering 'are you sure?' repeatedly at the examiner.

So mumsnet, have you been amazed? Had an amazing time? Eaten something amazing? Been somewhere amazing?

Victoria Falls on the Zambia/Zimbabwe border is pretty amazing.

SaucyJack · 26/04/2015 12:32

Yep. I have an uncle who does weirdly Derren Brown-style mind-reading tricks. I am genuinely amazed.

LuckyBlackKitty · 26/04/2015 12:34

Yes, scuba diving with a whale shark. It was magical and truly amazing! We spent about 20mins swimming with it.

ShouldIworryornothelp · 26/04/2015 12:35

I'm amazed at how resilient my children are. Nothing, and I mean nothing, gets to them. They've had a horrific 6 months in one way and another yet they are achieving top marks at school and top marks in their extra curricular activity exams. It's absolutely floored me how they've done it.

Alchemist · 26/04/2015 12:36

Standing at the back door one night I saw the moon "bouncing" along the sky. Shook my head and it was still bouncing!

Apparently, due to my amazement, I have forgotten the term for it but it really was amazing. The thought of ancient people seeing that and they must have been amazed too bet that's where all the gods come from.

Amazing!

adarkwhisperinthewoodwasheard · 26/04/2015 12:36

Yup - by dsis cake making/decorating skills. Seriously impressive and amazing

queeneileen · 26/04/2015 15:07

Yep.

Went on holiday in the UK in the middle of bloody nowhere and the night sky and the stars were so fantastically clear and the moon was low enough and bright enough to light up the path back to our accommodation that it was as clear as day, but in shades of white, grey and black.

I was genuinely amazed by the sight of it.

TanteRose · 26/04/2015 15:10

Kate Bush concert last year was completely amazing - seriously have never and will never see the like of it again...

lionheart · 26/04/2015 15:23

I agree with that one TanteRose. Took me a long time to come back down to earth after seeing KB perform.

ollieplimsoles · 26/04/2015 15:24

We were amazed driving on a remote Swedish highway a few years ago, it was foggy and my dad (who lives there) told us how rare it is to see a wild elk.

As we turned the corner, two stood on the grass right in front of us, a baby one too!
We stopped the car and looked for ages in the fog at them. It was my dh's first time visiting, we were all amazed

IDismyname · 26/04/2015 15:27

Amazing times

  • on safari last year. Spent a week open mouthed at some of the animals up close Shock
  • sailing years ago in very remote waters. Mainly wildlife, sea life and stars
Nayville · 26/04/2015 15:29

I was amazed when I visited the Grand Canyon.

Have also been amazed at my daughters knack for reading and writing.

PtolemysNeedle · 26/04/2015 15:30

People amaze me. I'm lucky enough to know some people that have had to show huge amounts of bravery and mental strength, and still manage to be kind, friendly and understanding towards the relatively lesser problems of others, and I find that amazing.

PacificDogwood · 26/04/2015 15:30

Yes - coming around the bend in the road and then quite suddenly have Yosemite Valley with Half Dome in the distance was amazing and actually gave me quite a church-like feeling (maybe the word is more 'awesome' in its original sense?).

And the one and only Michelin-Starred meal I had some years ago was truly amazing too Grin

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 26/04/2015 15:34

I'm with you OP on the driving test - I also asked my examiner if he was sure! Ditto on passing my state registration first time, I thought I'd made a real mess of it.

Amazing experiences: diving on the Great Barrier Reef, being handed a giant sea cucumber, that kind of thing.
Sitting on the beach at night at Cape Tribulation, watching the full moon on the waves - got a beautiful picture!
Going to see How To Train Your Dragon floor show (made by the people who do Walking With Dinosaurs) - what they could achieve with animatronics and clever filmwork was amazing all right!
Seeing a live wombat in the wild for the first time - in the snow!
A truly amazing penumbra around the moon some years ago in the UK - my sister phoned me to go outside and look at it - it was HUGE! Still don't know why but I stood staring open-mouthed at it for a while!

I wouldn't ever be amazed at my breakfast though.

Silvercatowner · 26/04/2015 15:39

Yosemite was truly amazing. The view from Glacier Point (including full moon rise) was so amazing I sobbed. Never seen anything like it.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 26/04/2015 15:42

I suppose I'm more frequently amazed by the horrible things people do to each other (watching the news and stuff) than by positive things!

Not trying to bring this down I was sitting here thinking "what have I found amazing" and those were the sorts of things that came to mind! I must try and think of an upbeat one...

SouthernComforts · 26/04/2015 15:49

Lying in a field in rural France at night watching a meteor shower.

Seeing my favourite band live, playing my favourite song.

I'm sure there are more, those two just popped into my head first

Mintyy · 26/04/2015 15:52

Yes, I've had four or five acid trips in my younger days. They truly were utterly amazingly wonderful, all of them. Can't really put into words how or why, but they were deeply profound and meaningful to me and I am so pleased I had them but don't tell my children.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 26/04/2015 15:58

Ha! Yes, drugs. First time coming up on a pill. First trip...
Also have pulled a couple of truly amazing looking men, much to my own amazement.

Again, not sure that's what the Op's after Grin

aftereight · 26/04/2015 16:03

Two things spring to mind:

Firstly, my children. When I look at them, really look at them, I am truly amazed and humbled by how they are no longer babies, but proper little people, with strong bodies, freckles, eyes full of wonder, heartbreaking naivity and their own distinct personalities.

Secondly, when I visited the Maldives, I was amazed by so many things; looking down at the islands from the seaplane, the view for all the world like a treasure map; the soft powder of the coral sand; the sense of absolute remoteness; the phosphorescence in the edge of the surf at night; the incredible show of the stars and milkyway; the life on the reef (rays, parrotfish, turtles, black tip reef sharks..)

Oh, and yes, passing my driving test Grin

mmgirish · 26/04/2015 16:15

I've swam with whale sharks too. Three times actually. It was amazing each time. Swam and splashed in the sea in the dark with phosphorescence was amazing too.

ilovemargaretatwood8931 · 26/04/2015 16:17

What Ptolemy said.

People amaze me frequently. My friend is incredible in so many ways, and the fact that she's nearly 100 years old makes her extra amazing.

Birds migrating- I find this amazing. The way that baby swifts are left by their parents to fly alone to Africa, and they do it, and then come back to the same nesting sites in the UK. Amazing!

Hearing KD Lang sing live was amazing. Left me speechless and with tears in my eyes. Also Mary J Blige. Sublime.

Childbirth. Or any animal being born. Amazing.

When I spent a month on a surgical ward as a patient, I was amazed several times every hour (literally, when I was conscious at least!) by the skill, bravery, love, caring and cleverness of people all around me- the staff, the patients, the relatives. It was a horrendous experience in many ways, but it amazed me continually.

Landscapes often amaze me. If they are natural and beautiful, or if they are full of buildings. I find it amazing that people are clever enough to build things.

chrome100 · 26/04/2015 16:19

I'm amazed by beautiful landscapes. I've lived in Yorkshire and Cumbria all my life but never fail to be awestruck by a good mountain or a sunset.

TweenageAngst · 26/04/2015 16:19

Planes. Every time I fly. They are the embodiment of how amazing humankind is, the courage to even think it was possible and the determination to make it happen.
Looking at the stars in the southern hemisphere, we are such a tiny part of something infinitely huge and beautiful.
The human body is pretty amazing too.
