To ask if you've ever genuinely been amazed or had 'amazing time' - what amazes you?!

So on FB it seems people are easily amazed.
Someone this morning was 'amazed' by their breakfast and someone else had an 'amazing' time swimming.

This caused me to think: have I ever truly been amazed? And the answer is yes. I have. I was amazed when I passed my driving test as I didn't think I stood a chance. Amazed to the point where I was lost for words apart from stuttering 'are you sure?' repeatedly at the examiner.

So mumsnet, have you been amazed? Had an amazing time? Eaten something amazing? Been somewhere amazing?

Yes, visiting the ancient Egyptian temples and tombs around Luxor and seeing Tutankhamun. Also twice in New York. I've seen pictures of the view from the Empire State building and thought 'nice view' but when actually up there it was actually ,'wow, amazing'! Also I've seen pictures of the 9/11 memorial and thought nice memorial but when actually there and seeing it to scale it was very powerful and moving and amazing.

First pill which kicked in as my favourite band launched their set at a festival about 20 years ago. That was amazing and I can still get goosebumps thinking about it.

Agree with Mintyy and acid. One in particular during the most amazing lightning display in the Canadian Rockies. Unreal.

Things that have amazed me
Birth - it was an amazing experience each time. Not enjoyable but truely incredible.

Vic falls
Manchu Pichu
Playing with baby jaguars
A job that I wasn't expecting to get as I was much less qualified than most of the other applicants.
A promotion that I really wasn't expecting to get.
South African thunderstorms
The Canadian ice storm - about 15 years ago
Safaris
Lake titicacca (can't spell)
Sailing in a BIG storm with big rolling waves in a smallish wooden boat
Skiing
The glow worm caves in NZ
Passing the maths module of my degree Blush
A university production of some Beckett short plays.
The Atacama (can't spell) desert

I can think of lots more I am old though but I'm not sure I've had amazing breakfasts. I've had some delicious and memorable breakfasts but I wouldn't describe them as 'amazing'

youmakemydreams · 26/04/2015 16:37

I still am amazed when I look at my 3dc that I actually grew them and gave birth to them.

I am amazed when I look at ds1 running about confidently with his friends at Cubs and last night at a friends house sleeping over and being comfortable playing around. He was the shyest small child I have ever met. He used to slide under tables at visits to nursery before he started if someone spoke to him. He rarely spoke outside the house really. It amazes me how hard he has worked himself to overcome this because he realises he has way more fun by getting out his comfort zone and joining in than sitting hiding behind me. So proud of him.

I am regularly amazed at how resilient dd is. She has special needs and just doesn't let it get her down. She joins in and tried everything determined to find things she enjoys and is good at. It has paid off she is dancing with her school tomorrow in a competition at the theatre and plays drum in a pipe band. She sees other people opinion of her as their problem because she is the way she is and she likes who she is. I don't know if I could have her strength and she's only 11. She is amazing.

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 26/04/2015 16:45

If your point is that the word "amazing" has been diluted through overuse, I agree with you.

PacificDogwood · 26/04/2015 16:48

Interesting that so many posts relate to some kind of 'natural' phenomenon - and I include childbirth in that category (cannot believe that one did not occur to me Blush).

People frequently amaze me - in their capacity for empathy and goodwill to others, and in how cruel and inhumane they can be Confused

carabos · 26/04/2015 16:58

I think I'm in a permanent state of amazement, and not always in a good way. Today I'm amazed that I've run 10k in under an hour - with 12 weeks to go to my race and a target time of 55 min for that event.

almondcakes · 26/04/2015 17:00

Love and theme parks.

maudpringles · 26/04/2015 17:04

I genuinely love the song Everlong by the foo fighters.
So to stand and watch Dave Grohl actually sing those lyrics totally amazed me.
I didn't stop smiling for days.

ConcreteElephant · 26/04/2015 17:08

I hear you OP.

An acquaintance got very excited about the item she was holding and pronounced it 'awesome'.

It was a dog bowl.

Higgle · 26/04/2015 17:09

Seeing an Elephant family in the wild, riding flat out at tolt on an Icelandic horse along a beach, DS 1 going to Oxford, that I could learn complex asian cooikng techniques at DeMuth's cookery school and that a threadbare old stray of a Staffie could bring me such happiness.

I get amazed quite a lot!

museumum · 26/04/2015 17:16

I'm often amazed by views/mountains/weather etc. I'm lucky enough to have visited the Himalayas the Andes and many times to the Alps. All are amazing. Breathtaking.

I've tasted some amazing foods at a Michelin star restaurant. The thing that made them "amazing" was just an intensity of flavour I never realised was possible.

ConcreteElephant · 26/04/2015 17:18

Higgle, I've done the Icelandic horse flat out at tolt too! With a woman who held a speed record...crazy, what a vigorous gait that is :) DH (6ft 4 - so highly entertaining on an Icelandic horse (not as big as your usual horse for the unaware) lost his stirrup on the way and nearly came a cropper in a huge boulder strewn landscape - fun times!

almondcakes · 26/04/2015 17:20

Actually I'm amazed by people who are amazed. It makes me happy that somebody else is happy that their child went to Oxford or they found an awesome dog bowl.

Mamiof3 · 26/04/2015 17:20

Sunsets

Walking through a rainforest at night

A really GREAT meal I've had once maybe twice

I'm hard to 'amaze' but I often have a 'great' time

ConcreteElephant · 26/04/2015 17:21

I agree to an extent Almondcakes, I'm all about finding the joy in small things but this dog bowl was pretty unremarkable ;)

almondcakes · 26/04/2015 17:24

Concrete, I am imagining it was a Mason and Cash dog bowl.

Was it?

CPtart · 26/04/2015 17:26

The Maldives, and particularly the life under the water amazed me too.

ConcreteElephant · 26/04/2015 17:30

they look quite nice almondcakes, especially if you have a beast of a mutt who likes to chase his tea across the floor!

I can't remember the bowl (it was really bog-standard, just a bowl!) - we were in a Pets at Home type store in the US, I don't know if they do those there?

DH had a colleague at work who spent a small fortune on a bowl to reduce whisker-stress for her tremendously expensive kitten.

I have bowl stories it turns out!

almondcakes · 26/04/2015 17:59

I did not whisker stress was even a thing.

ConcreteElephant · 26/04/2015 18:11

Neither did we - very shallow bowl apparently. DH had to stop himself noting that our 2 had managed ok so far with a variety of regular bowls and appeared pretty chilled fellows - one drinks out of a pint mug.

Most of my 'amazing' moments are nature-inspired - Yellowstone Park in late Spring just as the baby animals are appearing, the wolves, the bears... Full moon in a violet dusky sky off the coast of Dorset...

EponasWildDaughter · 26/04/2015 18:44

The birth of my 4 DCs.

Snorkeling over the drop off in Egypt.

The food in Italy.

dun1urkin · 26/04/2015 20:46

I'm lucky enough to be very easily pleased which is great for DH and also for me because I'm frequently happy and excited etc

So now that the disclaimer is out of the way....
Last Saturday I had the most amazing meal ever at a lovely restaurant in Paris. Knock out good. amazingly good.

I've been lucky enough to travel quite extensively and have seen and experienced some amazing things...
Off the top of my head:
Moeraki boulders
'Dancing' with a sea lion in the Galapagos
Snorkelling off Big Island, Hawaii
Cliche, but getting married was amazing, too. I had No. Idea. I could have ever had a beautiful wedding, but we did (11 yrs ago now, but still brings a tear to my eye)

I sometimes wish DH was as able as I am to be excited / pleased / amazed by smaller things. He never seems to be excited, but clearly loves how excited I get Grin

Petradreaming · 26/04/2015 20:47

Seeing Petra was amazing. Seriously amazing. As was Ankor Wat and seeing Everest. I have been very lucky to be able to do a spot of travelling. I am never amazed by swimming. Occasionally amazed that I get as far as the gym though :-)

dun1urkin · 26/04/2015 20:47

concrete I really, really want to go to Yellowstone. Was it totally epic??
I even get vicariously excited
