To think any flavour of jam apart from srawberry or raspberry is just nasty?

DH keeps trying to persuade me to try some peach and ginger jam a friend gave him. It looks brown and nasty and smells like something rotted in it.
My mum swears by fig, plum and apple jam. It looks like someone else ate it first and nothing will tempt me to try.
In fact any jam I have tried that isn't strawberry or raspberry has just tasted bad and been a bitter disappointment.

bluestocking it's the most random thing, little grove of mirabelles on a random strip of land on a housing estate! Not many people bother picking them ether, they just rot on the trees, so I never feel guilty about taking the kids and swiping a few kilos of them! They gave yellow and ruby ones so I get two different types of jam. The yellow is my fave though.

DM made my birthday cake once (I am guessing 8th birthday) with apricot jam and I refused even to be in the room when it was cut [ungrateful]

Seedless raspberry jam is the nicest mass-produced jam. Blackcurrant a close second.

We have three damson trees, and there isn't a great deal else you can do with them when they all ripen within four days. Damson jam with the odd lump of flesh or slip of skin is incredible.

drinkscabinet · 25/04/2015 20:43

Strawberry jam is horrible, overly sweet and yuck. Raspberry I like, along with all related fruit jams. Lemon curd is heaven, i'll agree with you there and easier to make than jam I think.

Blackcurrant or Rhubarb and Ginger are the best jams IMHO, and if you don't get why rhubarb is good your tastebuds are clearly stuck at age 6 (might explain the love of strawberry jam) and you will never learn.

DoJo · 25/04/2015 20:46

Surely it depends what you're using it for? A nice gateau Basque has to be morello cherry, if it's a piece of sourdough toast, it has to be apricot. If it's anything else, it can fuck off because those are the only two circumstances under which I will contemplate the consumption of jam. Grin

iklboo · 25/04/2015 20:48

I love most jams except strawberry - unless it's homemade. Shop stuff is too sweet.

My current favourite is Whole Earth smooth peanut butter & bramble jelly on granary bread (disappears into kitchen).

FryOneFatManic · 25/04/2015 21:04

Raspberries are my favourite fruit. And raspberry jam so easy to make.

I think many people think jam is hard to make.

tomatodizzymum · 25/04/2015 21:38

Apricot is amazing and guava jam and I don't even like guava's but it rocks!

Allalonenow · 25/04/2015 21:48

MrsHathaway Do you not make damson gin with them? Toss them in a bit of sugar & bung them in the freezer till you have got time to deal with them, then make your gin, 'twil brighten up your winter evenings.

CremeEggThief · 25/04/2015 21:54

Marmalade and lemon curd are much nicer than jam. I only like strawberry/raspberry jam with scones and clotted cream.

abigamarone · 25/04/2015 22:15

Apricot jam, but only on a warm croissant.
Strawberry or raspberry jam sandwiched on empire biscuits.
Strawberry or blackcurrant on toast.
Strawberry on scones.
Strawberry on freshly baked doorstop bread, but only chunky jam.

comedancing · 25/04/2015 22:35

Rhubarb jam is yum

I'm going to say on the whole YANBU, although blackcurrant, under certain circumstances, is permissible and, not sure why but apricot is okay if part of a Mary Berry chocolate cake Smile I always think fervent jam makers do it for themselves rather than for others (just realised this indicates my default position on jam making is that it should be altruistic - how bonkers is that? Confused )

DramaAlpaca · 25/04/2015 23:02

I love blackcurrant jam & raspberry. Strawberry not so much, & I don't like apricot.

My favourite jam is the blueberry & something (?)raspberry from Ikea - it's delicious & not too sweet. I can't remember exactly what the combination is as I've run out, and my nearest Ikea is a two hour drive away Sad

morethanpotatoprints · 25/04/2015 23:06

Strawberry jam is just horrible.

Seedless raspberry or Blackcurrent are nice, i used to love plum jam as a kid Grin

Idefix · 25/04/2015 23:21

My gds bramble jelly, raspberry jam, rhubarb and ginger jam were divine. My childhood was punctuated with trips to the North, where I feasted on plain loaf with bramble jelly.
Not so fussed for apricot or strawberry though Smile

clickers123 · 26/04/2015 00:11

Pineapple jam on brown toast is sublime. Please try it!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 26/04/2015 00:14

YA, of course, Bcompletely U.

Apricot jam is lush, as is blackcurrant jam, blackberry jelly.
Lime marmalade is also lovely, but I realise I might be in more of a minority with that one.

However, peach and ginger jam sounds foul! So YANBU to not want to try that Wink

MyCatIsAGit · 26/04/2015 00:14

Blackcurrant is only jam will willingly eat except home Mede warm strawhberry jam. All jam is ok in cake.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 26/04/2015 00:20

Just read a bit more of the thread - you're buying the wrong apricot jam if you can't taste it.

However I've never found a cherry jam that's lived up to expectations - they've always disappointed. :(

drbonnieblossman · 26/04/2015 00:26

Peach and ginger sounds more chutney-like to me. Peach and chilli chutney is utterly lovely. But this being about jam. Strawberry I find bland as can be. Apricot, damson and raspberry are my favourites. Just not that horrid seedless raspberry jam, which is awful. As is jam administered from a squeeze bottle a la Harley's.

EugenesAxe · 26/04/2015 00:43

I'm always take or leave it with blackcurrant to be honest. I'm quite shocked at the number of apricot jam haters though... I love it! Blueberry is nice but tend to use for cakes; same as black cherry.

My parents got me rose petal jam from Turkey - now to me, that's lush.

drbonnieblossman · 26/04/2015 00:56

axe rose jam sounds delish - like Turkish Delight.

emotionsecho · 26/04/2015 01:22

No to Apricot, Plum, Peach, Apple, Fig, Rhubarb, or anything with jelly in the description - you do not spread jelly on anything.

Yes to Cherry, Blackcurrant, Blueberry, Blackberry, Raspberry, Strawberry (if none of the above are an option)

Lemon Curd, especially home made.

Lime Marmalade is the best although Orange and Ginger and Grapefruit also pass muster.

emotionsecho · 26/04/2015 01:26

I love rhubarb but not as a jam.
