To find 'Royal Superfans' completely baffling?

I mean, why? according to this DM link there are people dressed in Union Jacks, with posters, balloons etc outside the Lindo Wing already! The Royal wedding seemed to bring them out in force too!
I have nothing against the royals as such, if anything I feel a bit sorry for them, but cannot comprehend that kind of adoration considering what they do. Surely I can't be alone in this?

Agree with you 80'sweregreat. Under the vulnerable was an alpha female. It would have gone one of two ways, instant rapport or, instant dislike !

The book her ex Navy male head of household wrote was very interesting about her personality : She wasnt a natural rebel, but back her into a corner and she would go down fighting and not hesitate to take you and anyone in the vicinity with her. But then stuff on personality fascinates me.

The80sweregreat · 24/04/2015 16:03

My family are not Royalists (despite mum taking me to see the horses at trooping!) but they always say 'its better than a president or a dictator in charge' ! They divide opinion. There may be problems when the Queen does die as people are not keen on Camilla n Charles, maybe then we might get change. Andrew is a disgrace, but a lot gets covered up, stories disappear from the press. Its a topic that can fire up people as much as religion or politics..!

It's a good thing the Royals unite the country behind them Grin

The80sweregreat · 24/04/2015 16:08

I just dont think Diana would have tolerated her son marrying a 'commoner', however wealthy her parents are!

Sixweekstowait · 24/04/2015 16:08

I'd rather a president elected by a process that I was able to engage in even if I didn't like the result - and they are not elected for life either

OrlandoWoolf · 24/04/2015 16:15

What we have is a Prime Minister and a Government. Elected.

I don't understand why we need a Head of State as well.

Sazzle41 · 24/04/2015 16:17

I tried and failed to use speech marks there to quote him 80'sweregreat

Sazzle41 · 24/04/2015 16:19

I still wonder what value/what is Princess Michael of Kent & her DP bringing to the party dont they still get that Grace & Favour swish apartment at KP gratis on top of their countryhouse ?

ComposHatComesBack · 24/04/2015 16:31

Yep the whole working hard thing is a load of crap and all.

We are told that they work hard and Princess Anne is the hardest working of the lot. In 2013 she clocked up 280 Royal engagements in the year.

Sounds impressive, but not really.

Today she is in Dingwall in the Highlands and has three separate engagements

  1. visit the firth fishery board
  2. visit a riding centre
  3. visit another riding centre for children with disabilities.

Each of which counts as a separate royal engagement. All of which are in very close proximity and all conducted on the same day so not taking up much time. So in order for the 'hardest working royal' to get to her figure of 280 royal engagements, she has to put in a taxing 95 days work a year.

If we look at what she actually does, it is visiting and attending things, with a bit of strenuous plaque unveiling it isn't like she giving much of her mental or physical energy, especially as they are whisked around in luxury.

maninawomansworld · 24/04/2015 16:31

YANBU.
I just can't believe that people have so much spare time on their hands / nothing important or meaningful to do in their own lives that they want to go and wait out on a pavement outside a hospital for days on end to get a 10 second glimpse of a baby.

That said, they're not hurting anyone so each to their own.

The80sweregreat · 24/04/2015 16:34

Its a huge topic, if someone started another thread ' should the royals stay or go'? It would create so many different points of view. I cant see them going for years yet personally, but i do get the povs of folk who think they are just a drain etc etc. it is like religion or politics, people will never agree.!

OrlandoWoolf · 24/04/2015 16:36

I believe there have been a couple of threads on the Royals on here Grin

The80sweregreat · 24/04/2015 16:39

Missed them ones!

OrlandoWoolf · 24/04/2015 16:41

You just need to ask if the Royal Family are a waste of time. That brings out the 2 sides. Grin

The80sweregreat · 24/04/2015 16:51

Yeah, guess im over thinking it all.

Sazzle41 · 24/04/2015 19:01

I dont think you are over thinking it. Culturally & as a social phenomonen,(sp?) to me its interesting they inspire what Al Murray's Pub Landlord called 'blind, unthinking Sun reader loyalty' . They obviously fill a need re. that to some. Why do people need/want that? Its interesting.

Until the Queen Mother married into them, the Royal Family were totally off limits to the press/media for photo's , news. Then the Queen Mother said yes to a documentary about Elizabeth and Margaret and the whole obsession with royalty took off. Maybe she should have left well alone.

Sixweekstowait · 24/04/2015 19:33

The division between head of state and head of the government is interesting. I think it can be quite useful to have a head of state who does all the meet and greet bits and represents the country not the government. That's one reason why Charles should keep his pathetic ideas to himself. The other reason is that he is just stupid.

fancyanotherfez · 24/04/2015 20:07

The president system seems to work quite well, although I admit I don't know a huge amount about it. At least then you are not paying for a load of hangers on and supporting them from birth to death. I don't know if people are bothered enough to throw over the monarchy. Maybe when the Queen dies and we're left with Wills, Kate and Charles...

Sixweekstowait · 25/04/2015 00:41

Sadly the UK will never abolish the monarchy. I just have a complete and utter blind spot and become incoherent with rage when people state it is a good thing. WTFFF? Inherited positions of privilege and power < faints, swoons, requires smelling salts>.

GoddessWhoWalksEarthAsWoman · 25/04/2015 06:46

Completely agree with Bourdic but happy for them to continue to live as long as they give us our money back.

lionheart · 25/04/2015 09:55

I think other countries are better at this, the Dutch, for example, as someone has already said. A much diluted version of the sycophantic nonsense we have here.

OrlandoWoolf · 01/05/2015 09:54

Are they still there?

What do they do all day?

OOAOML · 01/05/2015 10:00

I wonder if they have to be in pairs, otherwise they might lose a prime spot when they go to the loo.

I don't understand all the people camping out at royal weddings etc, but at least they know when something is going to happen. Hanging around outside a hospital on the off-chance that someone famous will have a baby sometime within a 3 week window? Weird.

OrlandoWoolf · 01/05/2015 10:14

What about the journalists?

Have they gone?
Are they there?

What are they doing?

Nancery · 01/05/2015 21:06

I bet they are starting to hum a bit now, ugh!
I'm actually feeling a bit sorry for Kate, it's irritating enough when you go overdue but to have, for example, the Daily Mail constant 'great Kate Wait' updates and a load of nutters camped outside the hospital must be horrible! It's even more ridiculous that there has never been an actual due date announced so these people could be there far longer yet.
