Sending child to school with tonsillitis

DS did not go to school today due to tonsillitis, (very sore throat, swollen tonsils, coughing, high temperature, generally feeling poorly). When I spoke to school receptionist this morning, she was a bit off with me, but I put it down to it being early morning. I called again this afternoon to let them know that doc has advised DS stay home for next couple of days at least, and the receptionist made some funny comments about children pulling sickies and parents being fined if their children miss too much school. She also said that there was nothing in the 'rules' that said a child cannot attend school with a sore throat and that I shouldn't 'mollycoddle the boy'.

She upset me quite a bit. I made it clear that DS is genuinely ill and the doctor has advised he doesn't go to school for a bit, but receptionist has made me feel horrible and stupid. (So much so, I've worried about it all day, and now I can't sleep.) WIBU to complain?

I'm currently (teaching) in school with tonsillitis. Nothing a bit of paracetamol can't handle.

Clearly there are varying degrees of tonsillitis. I'd feel like a fraud if I was at home.

How old is your son?

I'm guessing this is infant school? you need to get a LOT more assertive when you meet these officious types.

IF a receptionist has an opinion on the health of your child, she needs to keep it to herself.

No surprise that she hails from Medical Receptionist ilk. tell her that she has no rights to take you to task, or anyone else for that matter and to wind her neck in.

Write a complaint to the HT and get this woman put back in her box.

Well done

There was a reception class child arriving at school about a month ago, late in the day, and her mother told me as she was signing her in that she has an ear infection and just wants to stay at home.

I was a bit shocked and said yes of course, I tend to let mine, and she said Oh I have no choice, I have to be in work'.

I was really Hmm. Poor little mite. If I were the school I would be sending her home again pronto.

She is an idiot. Tonsillitis is not just a sore throat. I have had tonsillitis and I was absolutely floored by it. There is now way a child can go to school if they have it.

VelvetRose · 22/04/2015 14:59

Poor lad, how horrible for him. DW had tonsillitis some years ago and she was actually crying in pain (she is extremely tough and brave) and was so ill! Well done for mentioning this to the HT.

I found it very sad that one poster prides herself on giving no sympathy to her dd when she has tonsillitis. How unkind.

NellysKnickers · 22/04/2015 16:01

I used to suffer terribly from tonsillitis, was very ill and eventually had them removed at 21. I think the troubles is some people say they have tonsillitis when they just have a sore throat. The receptionist had no right saying what she did. Cowbag. Hope dc is better soon.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 22/04/2015 16:43

Just remembered a story about the Receptionist at my dd's junior school.
Can't believe how I forgot her tbh.
She used to act like she was doing you a favor attending to you.
Anyway my dd was late one morning. In year 3.
Any way she had to go in through the office way were the dragon erm sorry receptionist was waiting.
And she has a real go at dd. how dare you be late. Get to your class and quick. Don't go on the joke with your customer service.
When dd told me. I went up the next day. And said excuse me. Do not speak to my daughter like she's something that's crawled out from under a stone. It's my fault she wAs late not her's . I'm her mother I get her up for school.
My mouth's too big. I can't keep it shut. It's small wonder I haven't been chinned now. IF I see any bad service it any being spoken to or treated like shit. I wont stand for it
I mean if she was 14 that would be entierly different.

Complain

I am recovering from tonsilitis. Its horrible.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 22/04/2015 16:55

It beats me how people like her are employed. When there are people with impeccable manners and social skills signing on

Lulaloo · 22/04/2015 17:03

We recently spent 11 days in hospital with DS began as tonsillitis and developed from there, certainly nothing to be taken lightly. I wish him a speedy recovery.

neverputasockinatoaster · 22/04/2015 17:05

Tonsilitus/is (or however you spell it because I never can) can be very mild or it can be horrendous and make people very very ill.

I find that people who think it is 'just a sore throat' have never had the 'temp so high I'm hallucinating elephants, can't swallow my own saliva, sound like I've swallowed a bag of marbles' kind.

I get the second type, trying to talk makes me vomit and I am useless for days. There is no way I could teach if I had it.
DH gets the first type. He has always seemed a little sniffy when I have my type. Then, one day, he got my type. Suddenly he got why I was soooo ill.

HellRunner · 22/04/2015 17:36

DC suffered horribly since a baby with bacterial tonsilitis - had it nearly every month til they were removed age 2. Best decision ever - totally changed child.
