to think a 7 week wait for a coil fitting is ridiculous?

ferrione · 20/04/2015 09:25

Just that.

Previously attended GP to ask about coil. Was told it cant be fitted til nurse has done pre coil swabs, and only at another surgery in the next town (and to make appt for fitting AFTER swabs done and results back).

So pitch up for swabs...am asked if I have fitting appt. Then try to book one...first available is 7 weeks away.

This apparently is because the coils are not fitted by GP but a visiting gynae who only comes in for an hour once a week.

Honestly, Jesus wept! Surely avoiding pregnancy should not be this difficult? Not impressed by another 7 weeks of abstinence Sad

Can you not just use a condom for that time?

It's not ideal but tbh it's not lifesaving treatment and given how long people have to wait for lots of nhs stuff I think yab a teensy bit u! Only a bit though :)

TenerifeSea · 20/04/2015 09:33

Sorry but think YABU because if they don't have anyone to do it, that's just the way it is. Can you not continue to use whatever you have been using for contraception?

Littlemonstersrule · 20/04/2015 09:34

YABVU. Pay privately if you want it done faster.

The NHS is free, priority should be given to emergency and life saving treatment. You have the choice of using other contraception or just waiting seven weeks, it's not the end of the world.

DidoTheDodo · 20/04/2015 09:35

Another one who thinks YABU. It's not life and death treatment so although you may find it annoying, just use condoms for the time being.

hairymuffet · 20/04/2015 09:36

Just go to family planning clinic, they fitted mine that day, no probs.

dementedpixie · 20/04/2015 09:38

I went to the family planning clinic for mine

kinkyfuckery · 20/04/2015 09:38

Can you use another form of contraception? Coil fitting isn't - and shouldn't be - a priority for the NHS.

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 20/04/2015 09:39

I don't think you're that unreasonable, 7 weeks is a bit of a push. Using the 'life and death' line is a bit melodramatic though, it's not like the gyno nurse does coils in between a hip replacement and neurosurgery. I know the NHS is over stretched, but contraception and female health is important, shouldn't be told off because someone is concerned about a two month wait.

Maybe ring in on the days the nurse is in OP, just incase of a cancellation?

jnh22 · 20/04/2015 09:39

YANBU. It shouldn't be so much hassle to get a routine procedure done.

Try your local CaSH clinic (Contraceptive & Sexual Health Clinic) - they have walk-in hours & appointments. And will be more experienced in fitting them.

SaucyJack · 20/04/2015 09:39

YANBU.

It'd cost the NHS far, far more if you fell pregnant because you couldn't access contraception quickly for starters.

DidoTheDodo · 20/04/2015 09:45

SaucyJack I am assuming that the OP can access contraception, just not the contraception of her choice.
And as she points out, she could abstain for 7 weeks.

MNpostingbot · 20/04/2015 10:49

YABU, someone in your house has a hell of a libido if 7 weeks is too long to manage with alternatives!

We are just about to do this and I'd be delighted if we get 7 weeks, seems more than reasonable in the circumstances

RhinestoneCowgirl · 20/04/2015 10:52

DH finally plucked up courage to go to GP last week to talk about vasectomy. GP has referred him but warned that it will be wait of 2-3 months.

We'll just have to keep using condoms in the meantime. It's a bit annoying but hardly the worst thing in the world.

AndWhenYouGetThere · 20/04/2015 11:00

You don't have to go to the GP - try a FP clinic.

shouldnthavesaid · 20/04/2015 11:11

Go via family planning. I was six months but then mine was done in hospital. I was offered an appointment in Glasgow (200 miles away) but declined that , happier to wait.

MzunguMzungu · 20/04/2015 11:16

Just use condoms FGS

ferrione · 20/04/2015 11:40

No family planning clinics in our local authority area, they are limited to teenagers! (sadly I am not a teen).

Condoms dont really work for us, we have tried. I was previously on the Depo injection but had to stop due to dreadful side effects.

I'm surprised so many people think I'm BU, isn't this just basic healthcare, like going to my GP? A 7 week wait for a GP appt wouldn't be acceptable so why should this?

Littlemonstersrule · 20/04/2015 11:47

Because you don't need to have sex whereas if you need to see a GP it's usually as you are ill.

Of course condoms work, even those with allergies can buy non latex ones.

MzunguMzungu · 20/04/2015 11:49

You can get all different sizes of condoms from this site www.mysize-condoms.com/ .

TheJiminyConjecture · 20/04/2015 11:53

I had a bit of a faff getting mine. Ended up going through the sexual health clinic in the end.

Just to warn you that I was told condoms weren't reliable enough alone for them to fit a coil if I'd had sex during the cycle they fit it in. A friend wasn't told this and was refused a fitting when she said she'd been using condoms.

TheJiminyConjecture · 20/04/2015 11:54

^ Terrible English but I hope you get the gist!

AuntyMag10 · 20/04/2015 12:06

Yabu, pay and do it privately if you can't manage to wait that long.

Fooshufflewickbannanapants · 20/04/2015 12:22

Yabu, it's not an emergency, you are not sick and you are capable of abstaining.

LL0015 · 20/04/2015 12:55

I think YANBU

That is post code NHS lottery. Disgusting that such a lottery exists.

It would get done in a trice where I live, maybe a week at most for the appointment.
You need to have your period I think to have it fitted or immediately after so that means they need to do it at YOUR convenience, not theirs.

I am in a London Borough. My GP fitted my current one, but this has been cut back that I have to go to the (not local, that got shut) hospital for fitting.

And as a medical procedure, you are supposed to have someone drive you there in case you suffer muscle spasms.

If this was the medical advice given at my fitting, why would it be any different elsewhere in the country.

Agree with poster who said about unwanted pregnancy costing more.

LL0015 · 20/04/2015 12:57

And hearsay is GP's are so keen to put a mirena in everyone due to the kick back !

Strange.
