AIBU clothes retailers don't make superhero clothes for girls

My daughter is a HUGE Marvel fan. She has a Hulk mug, loads of collectibles, all the films, Build a Bear Thor, the duvet set, the works. She is not a girly-girl, and her hero is the Black Widow.

She still likes pastel colours so I am trying to find some Marvel clothes aimed at girls but failing. There are Marvel clothes aimed at boys, with greys, blues, and green colours, but nothing in red, or pink, or purple etc. I have tried asking M&S and other retailers why this so, but they haven't bothered to respond. The worst is the Disney store, which has Avengers etc aimed at boys and Frozen etc aimed at girls.

I want to be kind and say there must be a copyright issue with producing these clothes. But in my meaner moments I think sexism reigns supreme. Does any other parents have boys who like Minnie Mouse for example? Does anyone know where I can find superhero clothes aimed at girls in the UK?

Thanks in advance!

Um... I think OP's daughter wants it in pink?

But go ahead and make her feel like shit anyway.

Norfolkandchance1234 · 19/04/2015 22:39

Find a local dressmaker to make what you're after.

greeneggsandjam · 19/04/2015 23:03

I would like to see all forms of superhero merchandise banned along with stuff on clothing like 'I love my mummy' and 'messy chops' and whatever else the likes of Next seem to constantly be putting on child sized t-shirts.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 19/04/2015 23:14

Why is that greeneggs? Genuine question re superhero stuff. I would have loved to have had access to more of this when I was a child/teenager but had to make do with a monthly Marvel round up comic and next to no superhero clothing (teenager in the mid-late 90s) apart from the occasional lucky find. I wore a fairly subtle Captain America t-shirt today and am currently lounging in primary coloured Marvel (men's) pyjamas. What's wrong with that?

Marvel and DC don't generally do the girly colours because that's not their brand. Understandable as they put a lot in to making their heroes, especially the Avengers, instantly recognisable. So really, why would they have a lot in pastel? Wish I could say they put a lot of thought in to all the costumes they have but I remember the grim early 90s and shudders the Pouches. So many Pouches. And shoulder pads Hmm

Have you tried ebay and Etsy OP? As others have said Primark is a gold mine for comic clothing (my t-shirt from today was from there) and my pyjama bottoms were from Tesco, so both worth a look.

Is there a small comic con near you? Sellers at these have exactly what you are after. I've seen some of the cutest spiderman tutu's of all things today at one.
And of course your dd would most likely meet a lot of her favourite characters there too!

greeneggsandjam · 20/04/2015 00:01

Not sure Chief, never been into superheros, nor have my children. I really just don't get the appeal at all. I also think they clothes look a bit garish. Maybe I'm boring but I just prefer plain/stripes/subtle pattern on clothing.

Why anyone would want to get their children into Spiderman and the Hulk is beyond me. They go into nursery/school and just want to act out all the fighting and find it hard to think about anything else. Yes, I know, they would make weapons from their fingers if nothing else was available etc.

myusernameisusername · 20/04/2015 00:55

i agree with the 'i love mummy' t shirts etc even worse i have seen ones saying 'sexy baby' and such Shock all totally wrong and inappropriate but marvel and dc are awesome im sure there is some tv show or character you and your DC like that you would wear on a t shirt or some merchandise or something ?

steff13 · 20/04/2015 00:59

Surely you don't think something should be banned because it's not to your personal taste.

My daughter (and my sons before her) loves super heroes. None of them has ever been in a fight, and they all do quite well in school. Superman has been part of popular culture since 1938, and to my knowledge there aren't generations and generations of people who can only think about fighting all the time. Also, Spiderman doesn't really use any weapons and doesn't really do much fighting, either.

Morloth · 20/04/2015 05:42

Can't imagine Romanoff in pink. ;)

I was chuffed the other day when I put on my new black jacket and DS1 said I looked like Natasha. Wink

There doesn't need to be 'girls' stuff. They can all wear the bright colors.

I will however cede that the 'muscled' costumes are a bit sucky. But the female equivalent might be a bit inappropriate.

MetallicBeige · 20/04/2015 05:57

Asda had quite a few pink and Marvel tops and t shirts in, I got them for dd.

exLtEveDallasNoBollocks · 20/04/2015 06:11

I was in The Range the other day and they had tons of DC and Marvel T Shirts, male and female cut and some pink kids tees.

(I bought DD a Flash and a Green Arrow...that's my girl Smile)

AmyLeeha · 20/04/2015 06:40

Haven't had time to read the whole thread, but my 3 year old likes Minnie Mouse and while I have no problem with him wearing pink (he does) I can't find anything Minnie that isn't pinky pink girlie bows and ribbons type thing.

It's Disney, I know, but have to say I was quite surprised at just how far the genders are divided, not just stereotyped (I had only thought of "Disney princesses" until I noticed this with the other way around).

NurseRoscoe · 20/04/2015 11:17

Things don't have to be bloody pink to be for girls! The superhero stuff is the colours the characters wear, why should they make a poncey pink version? I would tell my daughter she can have superhero stuff the colours it comes in or she can have pretty pink pastel stuff without superheros, or one item of each or something, then waste no more time thinking about it.

Idontseeanydragons · 20/04/2015 11:24

Try Forbidden Planet, they sell loads of Marvel/DC clothes and might be worth a look.
It's fine for girls to like pink or other traditional 'girly' colours IRL, it's inly on here I've ever seen such an intense hatred of it unless boys are wearing it

dd has the above one from asda, they also had a white one with a cartoon strip across it and marvel in pink writing.

not marvel but superhero and pastels www.next.co.uk/g30404s7#977957g30

I was sure that I had seen other superhero t-shirts in next but can't find them online.

FishCanFly · 20/04/2015 11:57

I struggle to find boy appropriate Hello Kitty stuff.

SunnyBaudelaire · 20/04/2015 11:59

that is deserving of its own thread fishcanfly!
I have trawled around the shops soooo often looking for Hello Kitty in a more boy appropriate colour! and whenever I ask, the assistants start rolling their eyes and whispering! Sexist bastards!

QueenofallIsee · 20/04/2015 12:24

Sorry OP YABU - my DD and I have between us

  • 'Girls' batman PJs (primark)
  • Wonder woman hoodie (topshop)
  • Marvel leggings (primark)
  • numerous hoodies etc inc Black widow (Truffleshuffle.com)
  • Spider man knickers (primark)
  • batman and avenger vesty tops (H&M)
  • superhero converse (shue)
  • avengers onesie (amazon)

So what you must mean is that Next don't sell them cos they are all over the high street

crazykat · 20/04/2015 13:21

My dd's are the same, love superhero t-shirts but want them in pink or purple. It's nothing to do with 'girls' and 'boys' clothes they just love pink and purple. The fit is different in clothing aimed at boys and girls, girls t-shirts tend to be longer and narrower while boys thirty tend to be wider, I'd happily buy dd a t-shirt from the boys section but she's tall and skinny and to get one the right length it would be far too wide.

I'll have a look in primark and see if I can get them some t-shirts in their favourite colours and they might stop complaining that ds has superhero stuff and they don't Grin.

Minions · 20/04/2015 13:25

Here's a girlie superman outfit if that's the kind of thing you're looking for? It's from M&S and there's 20% off today

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 20/04/2015 17:32

If you have a 8/9/10 year old girl the tighter fitting adult size 6 often fits them as a looser fit. So worth a look in both the child's and the adults section.

BigBroIsWatching · 20/04/2015 18:30

Sainsburys have a Spidergirl outfit in the dress up section. It has a tutu attached to it. Try and find a link if I can.
