"ungyuns"

Where does that added G come from?

Is it just your friends or a regional thing? Never heard it said like that.

Sleepyfergus · 16/04/2015 18:08

Never heard it said like that either!

XiCi · 16/04/2015 18:09

Never heard this, ever

VenetiaFleet · 16/04/2015 18:09

Never heard it like that though I have heard a woman with the surname Onions pronounce it Un-EYE-ons.

WorraLiberty · 16/04/2015 18:10

Oh that's a blast from the past OP Grin

My Irish mother used to pronounce it like that

And 'Pad-ay-tas' instead of potatoes!

Bunbaker · 16/04/2015 18:10

Never heard it either. I'm from South London and now livie in South Yorkshire. Maybe you have odd friends or it is very regional.

londonrach · 16/04/2015 18:10

Puzzled (being dyslexic doesnt help)..

Satsumafairy · 16/04/2015 18:10

Really? I've never heard that.

BuzzardBird · 16/04/2015 18:10

Yer mekin it up ay yer binary? Grin

TheCunnyFunt · 16/04/2015 18:10

Yes! Or 'un'ee'yuns. There are so many things that people mispronounce that drives me crackers. My PILs add an N into their own surname! Think 'Layton' they say 'Laynton'. DP has no idea why they do this.

ElizabethHoover · 16/04/2015 18:11

my french teacher taught us to say WANGNONS
which they dont say in france it seems

00100001 · 16/04/2015 18:12

Wow - I'm amazed people have never heard of this before!

London say the word onion to yourself, then add a 'g' after the first 'n' - will sound like "ung-yuns"

I know lots of people who do this (Jamie Olivier doess this!) - I'm on Hertfordshire!

MendipsMary · 16/04/2015 18:13

VENETIA - that reminded me of a family in my nan's road that called themselves the O'Nions Hmm.

Incidentally, I've not heard onions said with a 'g' in either.

wigglesrock · 16/04/2015 18:14

My Dad says it like that - I always thought he was just winding us up - it worked Smile That and picturesquoo and silly can you canoe jokes seemed to be his comedic repertoire.

00100001 · 16/04/2015 18:17

aahhhh - picturesquooooo!!! my mum does that!

I am from the London area 00100001 and have never heard onions pronounced like that.

molyholy · 16/04/2015 18:17

Yeah cunny. I have also heard it pronounced 'Un-ee-yuns'. Not heard the 'g' pronunciation though.

londonrach · 16/04/2015 18:17

Ok i admit it i spent 2 years of my childhood deaf until an operation (aged 7) and missed learning my early sounds and i suspect my dyslexia is linked to that. (Hangs head in shame). Sorry shouldnt post on a word thread but bored as hubby late from work tonight. Is this regional or due to word sounds? Cant hear the g?

I'm in Herts and have never noticed anyone say it like this. Jamie Oliver has such a stupid, affected mockney accent (and fat tongue) that he can hardly sayanything right.

Dr0pThePirate · 16/04/2015 18:22

Erm, I say UN - YONS or maybe UN - YINS.

Yes, it's UN - YINS

Is that right?

00100001 · 16/04/2015 18:24

I'm goign to try and find an example.... wait there!! Grin
