"ungyuns"

Where does that added G come from?

Had a good chortle at this. Never heard onions pronounced like that.

Love the O' Nion family.

I have a name that a lot of people add an S on to. It drives me mad too. So much so that I think there should be a law brought out, either everyone has an S or no one should.

Think of a name like Mark. So I would be Susan Marks! Grrrr!

I loved pa in law adding an N to his name. Now why would you do that? .

LuisSuarezTeeth · 16/04/2015 18:28

Oh it's a soft "G"

I've heard it. I'm not annoyed by it.

Jamie Oliver annoys me intensely though.

liveloveluggage · 16/04/2015 18:29

I love a bit of ungyun in me sangwidges.

WorraLiberty · 16/04/2015 18:32

That was it liveloveluggage!

I've been racking my brains, trying to remember what the other thing was that my Mum used to mispronounce.

'Sangwidges!' Grin

Oh and 'hambag', instead of 'handbag'.

It's a wonder we learnt to communicate at all Blush

Dowser · 16/04/2015 18:33

I've just listened to the video and it sounds like Jamie says it like I do

I heard un- yuns!

No G though!

Puzzled !

dalmatianmad · 16/04/2015 18:34

No, never heard it pronounced like that..

Dowser · 16/04/2015 18:35

Pacifically...for specifically!

That's another Grrr from me.

londonrach · 16/04/2015 18:36

Ok never heard it in the southwest or london (relaxes as not due to the dyslexia and regional thing)

Dowser · 16/04/2015 18:37

My lovely little grandson assures me the correct pronunciation is

Un- ling!

So we are all wrong!

Lol!

cashewnutty · 16/04/2015 18:39

I pronounce onions like that. I am Scottish if that helps explain things!

Branleuse · 16/04/2015 18:39

hes not putting a G in it. Wtf are you talking about?

cashewnutty · 16/04/2015 18:42

Listened to Jamie saying onions and he says it like i do. It is just a slight g sound but not very discernible.

Sallyingforth · 16/04/2015 18:49

I think cowboys say it like that ...

cashewnutty · 16/04/2015 18:50

My dad calls them ingin's.

CentralPerk · 16/04/2015 19:00

Ingins here in the Scottish Borders (depending on who you talk to right enough!)

pollypocket123 · 16/04/2015 20:16

SE London. Loads of people say it like this!

MendipsMary · 16/04/2015 20:46

LUDOVICA - no, she lived in Liverpool all of her life. Maybe the Scouse O'Nions had relatives in Cheltenham Grin!

cleanmyhouse · 16/04/2015 21:17

In Doric, they say ingins. Try that one on for size.

Tunna · 16/04/2015 21:32

I can categorically say that in liverpool we pronounce them 'un-yuns.

As in 'gerrus a packet a pikk-uld un-yun monster munch will yer, I'm staar-vin! but only when all the beef ones have gone mind Grin

hotfuzzra · 16/04/2015 22:14

DH used to say it before I created such a stink that he now says it correctly: un-yun

Rozalia · 16/04/2015 22:19

My dad used to say it with a g. Norfolk accent.

I'd totally forgotten this. He hadn't been able to speak for some years-dementia-and died a month ago.

It was lovely to remember that, thanks.

PerspicaciaTick · 16/04/2015 22:23

My (London bred) DH says it like this.
On a good day, I don't notice anymore. On a bad day, I could rub the fucking ungyoungs in his face.

00100001 · 16/04/2015 22:25

I'm glad I'm not imagining this, was worried for a while Blush
