YODEL are delivering my parcel

Bought a large (plastic) item off ebay recently - Arranged with the seller for it to be sent via My Hermes. Everything was fine until it turned up earlier this week cracked and damaged beyond use or repair, despite the best efforts of the seller to package it properly (the plastic shards in the box gave the game away that the damage was done once it was sealed rather than the seller sending it that way) Have now put in a claim with MH for the damage..

In the meantime I've been trying to source a replacement item. They don't seem to be stocked in any high street stores so buying one outside of the internet isn't an option. Found one today - only to be told its YODEL that are going to be delivering it Hmm
I've never heard anything good about them (Google tells its own horror stories) and now I'm having serious concerns that I'll soon have a matching pair of broken items.. any positive stories of Yodel at all?

I think they used to be dreadful but are better now.

About 5 years ago they managed to completely destroy a large hard back 'coffee table' type book; twice.
A blu ray player that I ordered failed to arrive twice. When the third one arrived it was obvious what it was as it wasn't in an outer box. I wonder why they went missing just before Christmas?

However, deliveries from them in the last few years have all been fine.

NoelHeadbands · 16/04/2015 08:02

Had problems with both Yodel and Hermes in the last six months.

It's put me off internet shopping to be honest, I look for standard Royal Mail wherever possible or have items delivered to store

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 16/04/2015 08:09

I've only ever had 1 delivery from Yodel. Fortunately I was in the kitchen at the time, and was quick enough to unlock the back door & say hello. I swear he was heading for the bins before he spotted me though.

nemo81 · 16/04/2015 08:13

I've had loads delivered by yodel, always fine and get my delivery on time with no issues.

MendipsMary · 16/04/2015 08:20

As PP's have said, I think it depends on the courier. Our local Hermes courier is great, never had any problems at all.

Our Yodel courier on the other hand is a lying bastard unreliable. I had loads of problems with an Asda Direct order at Christmas. Twice they claimed I wasn't at home when I was (no card left) and then it was allegedly delivered to my neighbour which it wasn't. They had made up a name of the neighbour it was supposedly left with which wasn't their name. After LOADS of chasing Asda, the courier then claimed that BOTH items had been broken and returned to the depot.

I now no longer order from Asda Direct or any firm that uses Yodel.

I'm sure your delivery will be fine though, OP Grin

bruffin · 16/04/2015 08:22

I dont think I have had a problem with Yodel, but dont like My Hermes. There is no way of contacting deliverers if you have missed them to rearrange a delivery.

Rowgtfc72 · 16/04/2015 10:44

Local yodel lady is lovely. She hasn't got time to redeliver so will knock on lots of doors to leave stuff with neighbours first go. She won't leave stuff in bins as she says it costs her time and money to sort out the mess. Luckily my neighbours are all lovely and will take parcels in.

squoosh · 16/04/2015 10:48

It's so hit and miss with Yodel. My Yodeller is lovely but there are definitely some shockers out there.

MadisonMontgomery · 16/04/2015 10:52

Very much depends on the driver rather than the company I think. My yodel lady is lovely & does all her deliveries in the evening which is fab.

Drowsybutawake · 16/04/2015 11:05

We've had mixed experience but when it was bad it was very very bad. Good luck, you might be fine but if not their Twitter team is quite responsive (complaints team is crap though).

Last time I used them my parcel was dispatched at 8am and had not been delivered by 1730 - I phoned to complain and although I got nothing it magically arrived 20 mins later, exactly how long it would take to drive from the depot Hmm

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 16/04/2015 11:07

Never had any issues with Yodel. All the couriers seem to be OK round here....

PrettyPenguin · 16/04/2015 11:16

I'm on first name terms with my three RM postmen and most of the couriers! The majority of couriers that I use are wonderful - DPS, DHL, City Link (or Shitty Link as my DH likes to call them), Parcel Force, Yodel. The one I have the biggest problem with is Home Delivery Network - the driver is the most miserable soul you ever laid eyes on - he speeds up our track at ridiculous speeds which is really dangerous as our kids are often out there on their bikes. Most of the couriers and postmen will leave stuff in our porch as we are very remote and down a dead end track so there are no passers by. If it's a special delivery, the postman will leave it in the shed and leave a card to let me know (or deliver it on his way back from doing his rounds if it's a day he knows I'm at a playgroup and so later back than usual).
HDN guy just dumps it at the end of our drive - no note, no knocks. Several times I've had stuff damaged because it's been left in the rain outside.

We have the same guy deliver Boden/Joules/John Lewis stuff - in his own car - so I'm not sure what courier service he's from but he usually leaves it in the porch behind the wellies.

There's another courier (can't remember which one) which doesn't deliver stuff if he can't be bothered - just does it on a day when it's going to be more convenient for him, even if it's meant to be next delivery. I'll check the tracking and he will have apparently been to my house, knocked and left a card. Often this has coincided with a day that I've been out in the garden with the kids ALL DAY so I know full well he's not even been down the track, let alone anywhere near the house!!

Dieu · 16/04/2015 11:36

I've found Yodel terrible, but DPD brilliant. I always breathe a sigh of relief on discovering that the latter is the courier.

wonkylegs · 16/04/2015 11:40

My yodel guy is lovely.
The my Hermes one is awful everything turns up stinking of cigarette smoke
DHL & my postman seem to be having a competition on how much of the year they can wear shorts (impressively immune to the cold)

6LittleOnes · 16/04/2015 11:42

I like having items delivered with Yodel. Have never had the slightest problem. My Hermes on the other hand, I had a box of toys from the disney store delivered, opened it up and they were all damaged. Organised a return and replacement, when they turned up the box was demolished and most of the toys were missing! Dpd are rubbish here as well. Have had stuff left propped up against the front door when we didn't have a front garden so was effectively left on the street.

FriendlyFrog · 17/04/2015 00:00

Thanks for the reassurance - glad to hear there are some happy endings despite the horror stories. Item has now been dispatched (with the promise from the selling company that it will be bubble wrapped all over) so am keeping fingers crossed for no more issues... should be here early next week so will update when it arrives.

...Plan B if it does get damaged beyond repair/vanishes into space (I'm trusting you, if anyone from Yodel is reading this!) is that I'll go and play courier myself and do a 60 mile round trip on public transport to collect the next one Biscuit

DontWorryBeHappyNow · 17/04/2015 00:27

I wouldn't worry as it isn't your problem but the sellers! Why on earth are you making the claim with MH, that should be the sender's problem. You're entitled to a full refund by law (including the delivery charge) of the item arrived damaged and it's up to the vendor to claim any money back from the delivery company. If they won't, just open a dispute with Ebay!

FriendlyFrog · 17/04/2015 00:48

Because I booked and payed for the courier (My Hermes) myself rather than the seller doing it.. I know its not really recommended but it worked out ok apart from the damage. The claim that's gone into MH is for both the postage and the original selling price

MerynFuckingTrant · 17/04/2015 07:26

Both the Yodel and Hermes delivery people are great in my area.
Where I used to live the Yodel person was shite (late, would chuck parcels into garden etc), the Hermes person was fine but extremely odd.
She never said a word, just handed over the parcel while staring at me in a very unnerving way. One time I answered and saw her running behind a wall, she crouched there for a while (I could see the top of her head) so I went over to her and said hello, she actually spoke to me and asked if I could take a parcel for a neighbour (so I did). Really odd but nothing was ever damaged and always came on time. No idea why she hid behind a wall!

flyingpig7 · 17/04/2015 07:42

My mum had a yodel man come and collect a parcel that had nothing to do with yodel and had only been delivered that day. She wasn't expecting anyone to collect anything. Partly my brother's fault for letting him just take it, but how the delivery man didn't notice it was not the right parcel from the right house I do not know. Their customer service was rubbish and my mum heard nothing much for a few months until she randomly got a message that her package had been returned and she was getting a refund.

HellKitty · 17/04/2015 07:47

Panicking slightly. After all my reassurances here yesterday I've just found out that my AllSaints parcel (damn you for your online sale) is to be delivered today by Yodel Confused

Fluffyears · 17/04/2015 08:43

Yodel seem fine to me. UPS are useless and Hermes seem to like delivering at 8pmConfused

PeppermintCrayon · 17/04/2015 09:08

My local Hermes and Yodel couriers are BOTH good!

City link and UPS on the other hand...

FriendlyFrog · 23/04/2015 17:47

Update - its arrived! Yodel man who delivered it was lovely (carried it into the hallway for me) absolutely no damage to it whatsoever. They originally tried to deliver it on Tuesday but I wasn't home so managed to re-arrange delivery for today and it was here by 10am.

I've had my opinion changed about Yodel this week Grin
