Short people problems!

WibblyWobblyHead · 14/04/2015 10:15

Why oh why do almost every clothes shop put short length jeans on the top shelf/hangers? Where's the sense in that?! Confused

What other short people problems really annoy you?

OP posts:
rebelfor · 14/04/2015 12:19

I've often wondered how short people manage to extract the last few items from a shopping trolley, my 10 year old daughter nearly ended up standing on her head trying to get an onion out of mine last week and she's 5ft 1.

ILiveOnABuildsite · 14/04/2015 12:20

Snap on the big trolleys, I look ridiculous trying to reach small items at the bottom, it was completely impossible when pregnant.

Carrying the big bag of dog food, I 'hug' hold it and it dangles past my knees so I can't really swing it in the trolley so I have to try tipping it in but more often than not I end up pushing the trolley along until it's trapped between the shelves and me holding what looks like a comedy sized bag of dog food.

Don't talk to me about opening and shutting windows, I have to clamber up and down most of our furniture to achieve that.

How about the mirrors above the sunglasses display, I haven't bought a new pair of sunglasses in 10 years because I can't see what I would look like in them. If my old pair breaks I'm doomed.

Driving my husband car! For some reasons the only I can reach the pedals is if my knees are resting against the steering wheel. It's a mini ffs, it should be fine for small people.

Oh so many other grievances but most have been mentioned above thread.

SocksRock · 14/04/2015 12:27

Hey, I'm 5'8" and I have trouble getting the last few bits out of a trolley...

OneMillionScovilles · 14/04/2015 12:31

DH's car gives me a bad back because the curvature of the passenger seat is not built for miniature people. Adult car seats are the way forward (even if he does mock me relentlessly Wink)

limitedperiodonly · 14/04/2015 12:31

I have a recurring nightmare about not being able to reach the pedals in my car. IRL it would just grind to a halt and stall, wouldn't it? But in my nightmares it gets faster and faster.

This isn't funny. Well, it is a bit, in a macabre sort of way.

My mum's friend fell into a rubbish dumpster one night trying to retrieve something she'd dropped in by mistake. She was discovered hours later suffering from hypothermia. So it can happen.

Enormouse · 14/04/2015 12:31

Oh and I just had to tiptoe to be able to reach the counter in the O2 shop.

OneMillionScovilles · 14/04/2015 12:32

(Bumper cushion, not enclosed X point locking...!)

curlyweasel · 14/04/2015 12:32

Potato masher to close windows here too.

I've never owned a pair of jeans that have that natural finished look around the ankles.

I can get DS out of his cot now that he can stand, but have to sort of plop him in when he's fallen asleep (which usually wakes him up).

Have to jump up to close the car boot.

Have to put duvet covers on over the bannister so they sort of fall into it, grip the corners and then shake it out.

farewellfigure · 14/04/2015 12:39

Yes to all of the above. Jumping to close the boot and garage doors. Ladle for closing kitchen window. Dangling legs. I've got horrid chunky legs though so I do appreciate it when dresses and tunics come out long on me.

On the plus side, beds with boards at the foot end are not a problem. DH has horribly uncomfortable nights in these as his feet normally stick over the end of the bed. I'm perfectly fine in them and love being short when that happens. And aeroplane seats are quite comfy and not too restrictive. Also I fit into small spaces and am great at hide and seek.

RedToothBrush · 14/04/2015 12:40

Sofa shopping to accommodate both of our heights - we have to compromise.

Marks and Spencer is your friend.

Backpacks. Try the Littlelife Ultralight. Its designed for adults from 5'2" - 5' 11" (DH is technically too tall for it and I'm technically just a little short for it but its bloody brilliant as its so small and light AND cheaper than alternatives)

RandomMess · 14/04/2015 12:40

Switched to single duvets, OMG the revelation, sleep better too no more draft or getting the duvet whipped off me by a snoring Dh.

Yes certain cars cripple my back because of the contours for lumbar support. Had one for work and I was in tears with the pain after an hour and half - knowing that I had to do the return journey within a few days.

Not having a clue how tall other adults are - they're all taller than me so it's tricky to reference unless very short or tall.

Not being able to see over the top of the pram hood/wheelchair.

Tall fridge freezers - many are too tall to be able to see what's on the top shelf let alone reach.

TheFutureMrsB · 14/04/2015 12:44

Potato masher or ladle for opening kitchen window here too Grin

Having to climb in the bath to reach the shower when I only need it for washing my hair, seat belt rubbing, having to call my 14yr old to reach things on the high shelves (who then laughs and pats my head Blush )
The trolley thing too ... I think the list is endless lol

weebarra · 14/04/2015 12:45

I have tongs to grab the things on the top shelf which I'm unable to reach even with my stool.
Yes to waiting till the aisle is clear before attempting to reach things!
Also short and fat,not a great combination.

curlyweasel · 14/04/2015 12:46

I have to use a foot rest pretty much everywhere as my short fat chunky lallies cut off my circulation unless I raise my feet a little.

I've also found that people feel they are entitled to touch/manhandle you when you're small. Gives me the angry short person rage.

ghostyslovesheep · 14/04/2015 12:46

on the plus side, before I had kids I was a size 6/8 and got most of my clothes in Tammy Girl - tax free Grin

curlyweasel · 14/04/2015 12:47

Ah yes - getting the shower head's a PITA.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/04/2015 12:48

I'm 5'1" and the only regular annoyance is that I can't reach the pink lemonade off the top shelf in Sainsbury's if there's none right at the front.

The smaller high trolleys were handily introduced to our stores when I was about 6 months pregnant. I very rarely use the large ones now, just pile the little 'un high.

My top cupboards are OK since I started exercising and can easily step up onto a kitchen chair.

However, I think I may never manage to do a windsurfing beach start as the board has to be far enough in for the fin to not be aground.

LaurieFairyCake · 14/04/2015 12:49

Each of my boobs is bigger than my head

I look ludicrous. Like someone sat on Jessica Rabbits head and squashed her down.

Thurlow · 14/04/2015 12:51

I used to fancy learning to ride a proper motorbike.

I sat on one once. Many, many people laughed.

I've realised I'm never going to be able to ride a big fat bike.

OneTwoManyLots · 14/04/2015 12:53

Not being able to see into pots on the back burners on the cooker.

Please tell me it's not just me.

My kitchen was lowered as I'm disabled but it's also perfect for all short people that visit. It's fun to see all us short folk look normal while everyone else look like lumbering giants and awkward. Grin

IFinishedTheBiscuits · 14/04/2015 12:55

I'm very short and DH is fairly short and one of my two sons is very short. I do worry that he'll be on the receiving end of many jokes as he grows up, he already is and he's only 7... Although he does get in first with his own jokes sometimes. Grin

TinklyLittleLaugh · 14/04/2015 12:56

I'm 5'3" but leggy. Went to a new restaurant on Friday and could barely see over the table. Even DH (6'2") was saying, "gosh this table is a bit high".

At my regular hairdressers, I sit on their kids booster seat to lean back and have my hair washed. I quite fancy trying somewhere new, but what if I can't reach their sink properly?

PatricianOfAnkhMorpork · 14/04/2015 12:56

5' 3" here so not that short compared with some of you.

I have a folding step for the kitchen and wardrobes otherwise I can't reach the high shelves/clothes rail.

Big shopping trolleys where I can't reach anything small that's ended up at the back and the huge trolleys in Costco are almost impossible. I hate having to ask people to reach things down for me.

Petite clothes ranges that think you must be slim all over. Nope I do actually have a decent pair of norks and a fat arse. Thank god I have normal sized feet (4.5 to 5 depending on the shop).

The team I work in is nearly all men and most of them are well over 6'. I have to remind them I only have short legs when we are walking anywhere otherwise I have to trot to keep up!

High bar stools should be banned IMHO and I outright refuse to use them if I'm in a skirt and heels.

Hotels that put the safe on the highest shelf possible and beds that are so high I fell like the princess in Princess & The Pea. Just why?

I do like swinging my legs when I go to the cinema though Grin

OneTwoManyLots · 14/04/2015 12:56

If anyone teases me about being so short I like to point out that at all times short people can see right up their noses.

It's hilarious as the always cover their nose while looking horrified. Bogey alert! Bwah ha haaa.

feelworried · 14/04/2015 12:57

when my trainers fall out the the locker onto my face as I can't reach
