I'm not really a big eater in the morning, but something I do eat on occasion are pain au chocolat. I've had them 2 days in a row along with some fruit juice.

DH this morning says that they are not a breakfast item as they have chocolate in them. AIBU to kill him and eat my damn chocolatey goodness Grin

OP posts:

Definitely a breakfast item. I would also argue that bread is generally not a pudding product.

GGabcd · 14/04/2015 09:24

What about bread pudding, RoganJosh?

Definitely a breakfast item.

samsswampy · 14/04/2015 09:51

I would eat them for breakfast or any other time of day, now I really want one!

londonrach · 14/04/2015 09:55

Makes dawn a hot chocolate out of milk with my special belguim hot chocolate (pretty much full chocolate) and marshmallows, with a pain due chocolate to eat with it and chains her to the table......

londonrach · 14/04/2015 09:58

Pain au chocolate not due chocolate spell checking...... Side order of a small easter chocolate bunny dawn...

SecretNutellaFix · 14/04/2015 09:59

What does he consider breakfast food?

Admittedly it's not the best nutritionally wise, but it isn't going to kill anyone having chocolate for breakfast every so often.

mummytime · 14/04/2015 10:08

If you have/had children would he not allow them to drink hot chocolate at a hotel? Mine have often been offered this...

KatoPotato · 14/04/2015 10:10

Agree they are a breakfast item, however they do seem a bit 'Willy Wonka' indulgent!

helloelo · 14/04/2015 10:12

Of course they are!

goodnessgracious & senatuspopulous I'm in Lyon too! Currently wolfing a whole pain au chocolat down on place des Terreaux with DS :)

Lillabet · 14/04/2015 10:13

YANBU, of course it's a breakfast item! No one needs that kind of negativity about pain au chocolat in their life, ltb WinkGrin

theDuchessInTheDodgeCharger · 14/04/2015 10:22

of course they are
I should know, I'm French

Amberdiamond · 14/04/2015 10:50

We love them as a breakfast treat.

chipshop · 14/04/2015 10:54

Of course they're for breakfast. I can't get my head around people having them for dessert at all. So wrong...

whatsagoodusername · 14/04/2015 10:55

YANBU. Of course they are a breakfast item.

That should be enjoyed all day long...

squoosh · 14/04/2015 10:59

The frozen ones from Waitrose are delicious and so handy for those moments when only a buttery, choccy, carb fest will do for one's brekkie.

momb · 14/04/2015 10:59

OP: when your DH eats them for dessert, does he put custard on them?

SwedishEdith · 14/04/2015 11:00

I remember going to Spain in the 70s and we got some little kind of pastry thing with its own little bar of chocolate, all wrapped up.

Your husband sounds incredibly unsophisticated OP Grin

AuntieDee · 14/04/2015 11:03

Yanbu! Though I have recently switched over to Tesco's peach and raspberry pastry - my mouth waters thinking about it!

Tesco also do a dark choc and raspberry pain au chocolat ;)

limitedperiodonly · 14/04/2015 11:03

Of course they are, although I'm not used to them so they make me really zingy.

I love seeing a huge spread at a hotel breakfast buffet - and people slipping stuff into their bags for later. I don't do that of course, but I couldn't stop my mum and it would have been rude to have refused her sweaty cheese and salami rolls around mid-morning Grin.

squoosh · 14/04/2015 11:03

Send your DH to France and get him to order a pain au chocolat for his pudding and see how he fares under the sneering glares of the assorted French restaurant staff and patrons.

They'll probably get the guillotine out of storage just for him.

TheCunnyFunt · 14/04/2015 11:18

Who made the rules on breakfast food anyway!?!

SeaGrass · 14/04/2015 11:23

Regular weekend breakfast for us when we lived in France, and regularly seen on the breakfast tables of friends. Also, as someone else said, the post-school snack for children.

Though I actually I prefer plain croissants with really good jam, and my toddler is capable of turning half a pain au chocolat into a smeary weapon of war...

Yes, definitely get DH to order one as pudding in a French restaurant. It would be the 'rolling our eyes at the dopey foreigner' equivalent of ordering a cappucino after dinner in Italy.

riverboat1 · 14/04/2015 11:23

Well they definitely are a breakfast item here in France.

But then people here would say that sausages, bacon, eggs and baked beans aren't breakfast items...depends on your point of view.

I had a pain au chocolate for breakfast this morning, but I do try not to give into the temptation of having one every day.

BigBoobiedBertha · 14/04/2015 11:24

They're French (the clue's in the name obviously) and the French eat them for breakfast.

I have been known to indulge at other times of the day too but actually they are more breakfast item than anything.

I wouldn't bother killing your DH. They probably don't serve pain au chocolate in prison. Just LTB and eat your chocolate in peace. Grin

allcatsaregrey · 14/04/2015 11:24

I just had this conversation with my dp as I've just come back from a weekend away with friends and took loads of pain au chocolat because my ds has issues with food and its one of the items he eats. the kids kept asking for them and being told no not for breakfast!!
