to think only tall natives should be allowed in gardens

I'm getting increasingly annoyed with my chav neighbours and their ugly fast growing not native trees.

Aibu to think that there should be a residential law saying only native tall trees should be allowed? This would be much better for the environment also

are you talking about Leylandii?

CrabbyTheCrabster · 12/04/2015 11:15

I know... these bloody tall immigrants, coming over here and standing up in their gardens... they should bloody well sit down or go back to where they came from.

Oh hang on, is that not what you meant?

HagOtheNorth · 12/04/2015 11:16

Are you just talking about leylandii? Because if we just stuck to native trees, the landscape would be rather dull. How far back do you want to go?
Pre-Victorian? Pre-Tradescant?
Leylandii are a PITA for most residential gardens.

Salmotrutta · 12/04/2015 11:16

I was thinking you meant only tall people of proper ethnicity should be allowed in gardens.

BabyGanoush · 12/04/2015 11:17

LOL

If you only had natives trees/plants in UK gardens, you'd be a bit fucked. I take it you mean plants you don't like/find convenient.

Could you give more details?

echt · 12/04/2015 11:19

That should be "inconvenient".

AlternativeTentacles · 12/04/2015 11:19

I've just ordered some eucalyptus. Kill me now.

They will be coppiced for firewood but what the hell.

BabyGanoush · 12/04/2015 11:19

I think the alternative woukd be to see your neighbour in allhis naked glory. Read:

Likewise as a short native Smile

BloodyClarey · 12/04/2015 12:01

Some Dutch people live next door.

ljwales · 12/04/2015 12:03

Well I didn't want to say lelandii as eucalyptus and others can be just as bad. I wouldn't mind an oak, they look great and are a habitat to many animals and help biodiversity.

So what non- native trees are your neighbours growing?

Someone alert UKIP. This is a totally new policy angle for them, could be a massive vote winner...

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 12/04/2015 13:05

Trouble with oaks is that you'll have to wait a few generations before they'll screen that ugly extension.

Pasithea · 12/04/2015 13:07

You can't make a hedge with oak.

Stopandlook · 12/04/2015 13:11
Hmm

Can't think who they seek privacy from.

WestEast · 12/04/2015 13:12

I'd plant extra ones just to annoy you if you were my neighbour.

SecretSquirrels · 12/04/2015 13:20

You can't plant oak trees in the average garden they'd be too close to buildings.

CruCru · 12/04/2015 13:43

I have a holm oak hedge.

Also want to know what trees they have in their garden.

CruCru · 12/04/2015 13:44

Actually, I think holm oak is Mediteranean so not native after all. Oh well. Are you my neighbour?
