To think that if Harry Potter is evil then so is Elsa?

Met my first Christian HP Refuseniks today. The Bible forbids the casting of spells, therefore Harry is unacceptable. They only stated this when the subject of my daughter's tenth birthday HP extravaganza was raised. They were not preachy, they simply stated their case. I have no issue with them choosing to follow this path if they genuinely believe that.
However, their seven year old who was with them at the time, was dressed as Elsa and recently saw the new "Cinderella" movie. Eh? Now that I can take issue with. Specious reasoning, very sloppy thinking IMHO.

I asked how Disney fitted in. Apparently, it's a grey area!

They're idiots.

DrSeuss · 11/04/2015 19:36

Don't sugar coat it, Atrocious!

Makes no bleedin sense. Both characters were supposedly born with magical powers that they later learn to control. So it's okay for Elsa to fire ice around the place with her hands but because she doesn't say nonsense words and use a wand, she's acceptable to fundamentalist Christians?
Also, they're both FICTIONAL anyway Hmm

softlysoftly · 11/04/2015 19:50

Maybe they think Harry Potter was a biography? because like atrocious says they are idiots

elQuintoConyo · 11/04/2015 19:52

But... but... but... Harry Potter is fictionlike the Bible Shock

elQuintoConyo · 11/04/2015 19:52

strike out fail

thatstoast · 11/04/2015 19:53

The Bible forbids the casting of spells

I'm not 'up' on my bible at all but does it actually say that or is this one of those things that gets blamed on the bible?

OrlandoWoolf · 11/04/2015 19:55

Didn't Jesus bring someone back to life?

Or was that Sirius Black?

AnguaResurgam · 11/04/2015 19:55

They seem to have spectacularly missed the point that it's a Christian allegory, written by a practising Christian.

Shallishanti · 11/04/2015 19:56

I once stayed in a monastery, and we ate our meals with the Monks (anglican) one of them was v keen on HP. Didn't like Philip Pulmann though
Grin

YouTheCat · 11/04/2015 19:56

Deuteronomy 18:11 apparently Hmm

Shallishanti · 11/04/2015 19:57

what??? HP is a christian allegory???

knackered69 · 11/04/2015 19:57

Ooh what monastery was that?

DrSeuss · 11/04/2015 19:57

A friend's vicar once got a six week run of sermons on the Christian themes of HP........

Some Fundamentalist Christians think that Frozen is a 'Gay Propaganda Film' according to the Advocate website..
No mention of magic though.
My devoutly Catholic SIL refuses to let either of my nieces watch HP, anything with witches in, Buffy or Xena because of Witchcraft.
She still doesn't know I'm Pagan GrinGrin

DrSeuss · 11/04/2015 19:58

And apparently, Narnia is OK.

OP posts:
Shallishanti · 11/04/2015 19:59

I knew about Narnia...
actually, that has a witch and magic in it too

Idontseeanydragons · 11/04/2015 19:59

She does let them watch Disney princess films though, which I find strange.

OrlandoWoolf · 11/04/2015 20:00

Oooh - I know about Narnia.

The lion is supposed to represent Christ and his resurrection.

thatstoast · 11/04/2015 20:03

Thanks, Youthecat. That seems pretty clear!

At times like this I always think of the Halloween Simpsons episode where they're going to push marge off a cliff because they think she's a witch.

Lisa: Wait! Doesn't the Bible say "Judge not, lest ye be judged?"
Townspeople: (muttering variously) Hey, yeah! She's right! I guess so.
Chief Wiggum: The Bible says a lot of things. NOW SHOVE HER!!

JoanHickson · 11/04/2015 20:09

They give Christianity a bad name.

DrSeuss · 11/04/2015 20:09

I don't have an issue with their beliefs, they can believe what they like and I would happily argue against anyone who said otherwise. It's the whole didn't really think things through wooly thinking thing that does my head in. My friend's late father was against women priests. I disagreed strongly with him but he could give a reasoned argument backed by scripture with no doublethink. I respected him enormously.

Each to their own and everything. If you're into religion then go for it.

Personally, I couldn't see myself relying on a book, by multiple and anonymous authors and written about 1800 years ago, for any relevant guidance.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 11/04/2015 20:13

I think that you are correct. She definitely uses her powers on purpose at the end.

Did you ask them? Grin

OrlandoWoolf · 11/04/2015 20:14

The Bible can sometimes be a buffet selection - people take from it what they want and often ignore things that contradict their views.

Or a pick and mix selection. If you really believe the Bible is the word of God, then you should follow its guidance religiously. Especially Deuteronomy. That's got lots of interesting guidance - especially on women.
