To think that if Harry Potter is evil then so is Elsa?

Met my first Christian HP Refuseniks today. The Bible forbids the casting of spells, therefore Harry is unacceptable. They only stated this when the subject of my daughter's tenth birthday HP extravaganza was raised. They were not preachy, they simply stated their case. I have no issue with them choosing to follow this path if they genuinely believe that.
However, their seven year old who was with them at the time, was dressed as Elsa and recently saw the new "Cinderella" movie. Eh? Now that I can take issue with. Specious reasoning, very sloppy thinking IMHO.

I asked how Disney fitted in. Apparently, it's a grey area!

No but I may!

Of course it's a Christian allegory! About the redemptive power of love; the willingness of one to lay down his life to save others, and his return to vanquish evil.

(Plus of course the exercise of free will in pursuit of the great plan, based only on utter trust and belief in the father-like and wise leader).

They're being very inconsistent. I'd have been tempted to ask why they were letting their DD dress up as a witch then?

And - Harry Potter is a Christian allegory? Really?

I knew Narnia was. Aslan is clearly Jesus, and while there's a witch in it, she's evil and meets with a sticky end, so that's probably okay. Unlike that Harry Potter, glamourising magic and encouraging all those impressionable kids to get their own wands Wink

BorisJohnsonsHair · 11/04/2015 20:23

They're all fucking nutters. I have no time for religion of any kind. Can you tell?

OrlandoWoolf · 11/04/2015 20:24

And here's me thinking it's something to do with wizards, good and evil.

DrSeuss · 11/04/2015 20:25

I was not rude or confrontational. We have kids in the same class at a small school. They live just along the road. We will certainly meet again.

JK Rowling has given several interviews about the Christian allegories in the books, and how that was always her intention.

Example here: www.mtv.com/news/1572107/harry-potter-author-jk-rowling-opens-up-about-books-christian-imagery/

BoneyBackJefferson · 11/04/2015 20:28

maybe they like elsa because she is a genetic mutant, much like the Xmen etc.

DrSeuss · 11/04/2015 20:29

I may be slightly in love with JKR!

They are being a bit silly. DH and I are both Christians and all 3 of our DDs have read all the books. In fact so have we.

Charlotte3333 · 11/04/2015 20:31

My Godmother is a practising Vicar and bought me every Harry Potter book as it was released, she now reads it to her own DD, my Goddaughter.

It makes no sense at all, finding fault with one story but embracing another with almost the exact same basis.

MrsUrquhart · 11/04/2015 20:33

Yep, definitely a bit of Christian allegory going on in Harry Potter. Harry [SPOILER] "sacrifices" himself out of love (for his friends/the magical world) thereby defeating death (Voldemort = 'flight of death' in French).

dangerrabbit · 11/04/2015 20:45

They probably read this onion article about Harry potter encouraging children to practice satanism, which apparently has done the rounds amongst certain evangelical Christians who have trouble differentiating between fact and fiction.

Enormouse · 11/04/2015 20:47

According to my MIL, the local Baptist church in the village protested about HP being in the primary school library.

CaptainAnkles · 11/04/2015 20:47

Frozen is 'gay propaganda'? Confused How do they work that out then? There are some properly loopy people in the world, aren't they?

Momagain1 · 11/04/2015 21:54

Frozen is gay propaganda because nobody gets married in the end. Also, the shop owner in the woods and his family in the sauna.

Or so I was told.

maybe they like elsa because she is a genetic mutant, much like the Xmen etc.

I would lay money on these being the same sorts of Christians who deny evolution via genetic changes though. So, yet more fizzy thinking and pick and mix religious blindness.

UncertainSmile · 11/04/2015 21:59

The religious nutters who run The Entertainer toy shops refuse to sell HP stuff.

DrSeuss · 11/04/2015 22:02

And yet they sell Star Wars stuff and Frozen stuff. Quite what the difference is I'm not sure.
