To be dubious of "stampy longnose/stampy cat" minecraft persona

If i allowed it, my DD would plug herself into her kindle all day and watch what sounds like a lunatic, wittering and laughing away to himself, describing what he has built or scenes in minecraft.

It SOUNDS like an adult man, in fact it sort of sounds like a cross between Angus Deyton, jimmy carr and basil faulty.

Is this person actually brainwashing children?

Disclaimer - the whole point of minecraft is totally lost on me so maybe im being unfair

Demographic .
I do wish my fingers weren't so fat.
I had no idea how involved and intensive it is to shoot those videos.
Are zoella's similarly labour-intensive?

Ratracerunner · 10/04/2015 18:50

My boys are listening to him now and it seems very harmless. The boys would stay entranced for hours watching him if I let them.
Can't wait until he is on CBBC.

Perhaps he could start releasing instructional videos on polishing, making breakfast and hoovering....

AuntieStella · 10/04/2015 18:52

The sweary ones are CaptainSparklez. Are you sure your little Minecraft addict isn't diversifying and hoping you don't notice?

In the Minecraft parody songs, it's usually 'fricking'

fairgame · 10/04/2015 19:03

Some of the earlier stampy videos do have swearing in them before he realised who his demographic was. He does drop the F-bomb in the earlier ones, DS reliably informs me whenever there is a swear Wink

AuntieStella · 10/04/2015 19:08

I hadn't realised that!

(All my DC play Minecraft from time to time, but the main addict is 14 so I'm far more laid back about the swearing and probably not paying attention. Though I was a bit surprised when he told me he'd made a crystal meth lab. Anyone know if that's possible or if he's been watching Breaking Bad at his mate's house again and is trying to shock me?)

Lucyccfc · 10/04/2015 19:12

I find him really annoying, however DS (9) thinks his video's are great.

When Stampy builds something new, it really gives my DS some great ideas for things he can do. This has really helped his confidence, as my DS always says that he does not have a good imagination and he's not creative.

I think Stampy is pretty harmless, but I have told my DS that he can watch the video's but no mailing him.

thecatfromjapan · 10/04/2015 19:17

Crystal meth lab, eh? Bless him.
Mine little one is still building extravagant dream living spaces - often with a special room for me to live in. Smile

IHateStampysVoice · 10/04/2015 19:19

This man..... I actually can't put it into words.

His voice...... The noise of it

MrsCakesPrecognitionisSwitched · 10/04/2015 19:24

He was on CBBC Absolute Genuis too

Came over very well, I thought.
MrsCakesPrecognitionisSwitched · 10/04/2015 19:25

And he judged the Blue Peter app competition.
He is a legend.

Dc1 turns into a narky moo when she's watched Stampy, just half an hour is enough to send her off into a 'Stampy Strop' afterwards.
I don't know what it is, she's quite a placid character generally. Anything else screen related I can say five more minutes and she's fine, with Stampy it's an ordeal to get her off it. It's brainwashing I tell you. Grin

OrlandoWoolf · 10/04/2015 19:48

I'm impressed with how they actually film the stuff.

This is what happened when Squid got 10,000 subscribers.

Very funny Grin

SolidGoldBrass · 10/04/2015 19:56

(Ahem. I would, if you know what I mean. As long as he didn't talk in That Voice.)

I rather think: good luck to him. He's genuinely enthusiastic and knowledgeable, and smart enough to realise and not mind that his audience is all kids so he needs to avoid swearing and anything else that will freak out their parents. DS is a huge fan (and oh fuck, we have Terraria and Stampy-Does-Terraria as well.) He keeps DS happy when I am frantic to work (do a lot of work from home) and Minecraft is genuinely a Good Thing for kids as it encourages creativity and problem solving.

But oh the tedium...

youarekiddingme · 10/04/2015 19:57

He is an extremely intelligent adult male who went to college with my cousin.

A fact that my DS is in awe of and literally drools over the fact him and my cousin are FB friends Grin

BertieBotts · 10/04/2015 20:00
Grin

He's a couple of years younger than me and I have a lot of friends who are gamers, so I really wouldn't be surprised if he is a friend-of-a-friend of mine too.

Idontseeanydragons · 10/04/2015 20:07

Just asked DS (14) why he's so popular, he gave me this explanation:

'Because he's funny, doesn't swear, isn't rude and explains everything well for kids'
He went on to lecture me (at length!) about the worlds richest Youtuber who is apparently something to do with Disney and is also clean and appeals to children.

I really did take one for the team people!!

thecatfromjapan · 10/04/2015 20:22

Idon'tseeanydragons - that is very sweet of you. Grin

youarekiddingme - I told my dd about your fame-at-two-removes and she thinks you need to become his FB mate and I need to become yours.

youarekiddingme · 10/04/2015 20:31

Grin at cat DD.

youarekiddingme · 10/04/2015 20:34

cat Don't tell your DD I live in the same city as him too! She may want you to also move in Grin tell her I also know where he bought his last car and what it was - my cousin works in a car dealership and sold it to him cash. Cousin also owns a business useful to stampy and has provided the service for him too.

Ilovehamabeads · 10/04/2015 20:45

DS loves Stampy. I have to say his voice makes me laugh. It's irritating if I'm trying to listen to something else, but I love how overexcited he gets and how much passion he has for his Lovely World. His videos have helped my DS come up with some great ideas on his own minecraft worlds.

MetallicBeige · 10/04/2015 22:46

My dad's biggest ambition in life is to be in Stampy's Love Garden, which always sounds a bit wrong Grin.

MetallicBeige · 10/04/2015 22:46

My dd not my dad. Grin

TwinkieTwinkle · 10/04/2015 22:51

Cannot fucking stand stampy but I love the actual guy who makes the videos. Seems so lovely and just a nice guy. DS, who has never asked about me having a relationship (partner deceased) has decided Stampy should be my boyfriend! Loves him that much!

MrsToddsShortcut · 10/04/2015 23:25

DS asked me the other week if he could draw Stampy a picture because "If he likes it, he puts you in his love garden". I had a hideous two minutes where I practically sprinted to the computer with DS, 'calmly' asking him to "show Mummy Stampy's Love Garden...". I was convinced he was being groomed!

And so he showed me. And very sweet and pink and heart filled it was too Grin
