Are they all the same? Do you have any atypical moles?

18yearstooold I had a mole removed from my neck at the front of my throat iyswim, I was really nervous too but honestly it was fine, had stitches out about a week later and now only have a tiny scar

I always envied a friend with smooth and freckle free even skin tone
Ah, I like freckles, I think they look nice.

I have lots, also in the last five years or so have grown seborrheic keratosis things too. They are really ugly and my upper back is all bumpy with them. Both my parents have lots of them, some really big so I guess it's a genetic predisposition. I'd love to have them removed and just have scars instead. My father also had a couple of skin cancers removed so I find them slightly concerning.

I love my freckles though :) I have pale skin and get heat exhaustion so tend to avoid the sun and have done for many years. Plus now I cover up to hide all the bumps.

I remember once being out with friends talking about moles and we decided to take it in turns to go into the toilets to count all our moles. They had to come in and look for me in the end because I have so many. Grin

I've had one removed and had photos taken of me in my underwear from every angle so I can refer back to them to see if any moles have changed. Was mortifyingly embarassing having the photos taken, especially as I wasnt prepared for it so I was wearing my worst old grey pants. But definitely worth it for the peace of mind.

I've always wondered why babies dont have moles. My DCs started getting them around age 5. It cant just be sun exposure because DD has one right on her privates which haven't seen the sun!

I have hundreds. Most of them are small, some are very dark brown- almost black. I get new ones every summer. I pay for a mole scan once a year with a dermatologist and he hasn't found any dodgy ones yet.

My dad had a small melanoma removed from his back- he felt absolutely fine and the Dr was confident he'd got it all out. 5 years later, dad started feeling tired a lot and became a bit forgetful and also had a mild cough. Within a couple of weeks, he became very ill- he couldn't walk properly, couldn't talk, kept falling asleep. 4 weeks later he was dead- multiple brain tumours caused by his melanoma (which had been silently making its way up to his brain). I am understandably absolutely paranoid about moles now. I hate it when I see new ones appear on the kids and always get a GP to check them.

I'm not sure if I've missed it in the thread but how would I go about getting a mole map done? I've got loads and they do worry me.

Wadingthroughsoup · 10/04/2015 09:30

Myironlung, I just Googled skin clinics in my local area, phoned them and booked it up. They took photos of me in my undercrackers which they can refer back to each time I go. The dermatologist then comes in and does a visual inspection. The place I go to also has a machine which can measure the depth of the moles, so they pick out any they're not sure about and look at them with the machine. It costs about £100 a time. I don't know if it's possible to have one on the NHS- probably only if there is perceived to be a strong risk, I guess.

glittertits · 10/04/2015 09:32

I don't have any.

iwouldgoouttonight · 10/04/2015 10:24

Myironlung I had mine done on the NHS, I went to my GP because I thought a mole on my back looked dodgy and she said it did so referred me to the skin clinic at the hospital. They looked at all my moles and it turns out the one the GP thought was dodgy was fine but they thought a different one was dodgy so removed it (that also turned out to be fine). While I was there they sent me to the medical photography unit and they photographed all my moles and I bought a CD from them with all the photos on so I can check them myself. So first stop would be your GP or a private clinic.

FunkyPeacock · 10/04/2015 10:27

At a guess I have 100+

Everything from freckle size up to about half an inch in diameter (on back thankfully!)

I have several on my face which used to both me when I was younger but I really couldn't care less now

I do worry occasionally about them as I have too many to really notice a change in shape or colour unless it was one of the ones on my face

Chips1999 · 10/04/2015 10:35

How much would it cost to have them removed privately (and where?) I have a couple I hate Blush

ShumbTucker · 11/04/2015 08:03

Damsel. I had a small mole on my shoulder which presented exactly as you described, I ignored didn't worry about it until one day it was black bumpy and had an uneven edge. I went to my GP who referred me to a skin clinic after taking a photograph of it in the surgery. It was removed under local anaesthetic 10 days later and the results have been returned as normal. My GP recommends a "if it changes, remove it" philosophy, I would recommend anyone with a mole that changes in any way should get it checked out ASAP.

ShumbTucker · 11/04/2015 08:04

Oh I have about 20 other moles but lots and lots of freckles.
