To ask how many moles you have

Are they all the same? Do you have any atypical moles?

OP posts:
workadurka · 09/04/2015 20:28

Tried counting them once, when I got to 70 and I'd only done 1.5 legs I decided to call it quits...

I've had 3 removed (all turned out to be benign), these days I don't sunbathe at all.

I'm a bit crap at keeping an eye on them tbh but figure if I don't go in the sun they're not likely to change...

SprungHasSpring · 09/04/2015 20:35

None at all.

londonrach · 09/04/2015 20:39

Not helpful but have mole story. Whilst at uni studying podiatry our demonologist expert said theres no such thing as moles on the soles of the feet. I took my shoes and socks off in middle of lecture and shouted across room said yes there was (feet were now on desk, not my finalist minute). He looked at my mole central of the sole of foot and asked me how long id had it and i replied since birth. Our text books got re written after that. Grin I still get anyone who has moles on the sole of the foot to get checked out if the mole changed shape, size or colour. Sadly i have saved one lady who did have one that needed removing. Its rare. Back to op if worried get it checked out. As mentioned before its probably nothing to worry about. Xxx

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 09/04/2015 20:39

I have a bajillion (estimate), of the brown spots, but I'm also freckley, hard to tell when the beauty marks start and freckles end. I do have a large one in my ear, but Lord knows how I'm meant to check it. I had a youngish relative, who had a large one on her face, with three long black hairs coming out of it. I would personally do something about one like that, even if it was just cosmetic. I'm vain I guess!

londonrach · 09/04/2015 20:40

Some people are molely some are not!

londonrach · 09/04/2015 20:41

Not sadly!

LiegeAndLief · 09/04/2015 20:43

Hundreds and hundreds. Literally well over a hundred just on one arm. I did have a couple that changed colour during pregnancy but the doctor wasn't worried about them.

It does concern me a bit as I got sunburnt repeatedly an badly as a stupid very pale teenager living in the tropics, and there is a lot of cancer in my family.

Dontunderstand01 · 09/04/2015 20:48

London, why is it bad to have one on the sole of your feet? I have one! Confused

anzu66 · 09/04/2015 20:49

Grew up in Australia, at a time when people hadn't yet realised about the dangers of excessive sun, and have hundreds. I can't imagine having none. Every time I look, a few more seem to have appeared.

I go once a year to a dermatologist and have them looked at. Have had three removed so far. One was cancerous, but not melanoma.

One of my brothers had a melanoma removed from his leg. When the doctor saw it, he booked the hospital appointment for the very same day. That brother is pretty paranoid about avoiding sun exposure now!

One of that same brother's classmates died from skin cancer when he was only in his earlier 20s.

My father has been having skin cancers removed from his face on a pretty much ongoing basis for about the last seven years. And he hasn't exposed himself unprotected to sunlight for decades now. So the damage from decades earlier is still affecting him now.

Bottom line: if you have lots or are at risk, get them checked out once a year or once every two years by someone who knows what they are doing, even if the doctor has a bad attitude or makes you feel bad. Being subjected to a bit of attitude is better that dying. And do it even if you haven't been in the sun lately.

YesILikeItToo · 09/04/2015 20:50

None. Are they common?

londonrach · 09/04/2015 20:54

Dont understand. I have one so dont worry. You part of a unique group! Just monitor it but mind not changed sibce birth xxx

Whitewhine · 09/04/2015 20:55

100+ Have had over 15 removed and biopsied and results have ranged from benign to moderate atypical hyperplasia to severe atypical hyperplasia and malignant melanoma.

Clinically, they all look very, very similar. It's only after excision biopsy that a definitive diagnosis is made. I'd love to have a few moles instead of the hordes of them and resulting scars.... I'm 37 so have a lifetime of checking ahead.

sausagepoo · 09/04/2015 20:59

I have them everywhere, hundreds. Just counted and there are 61 on one lower arm. I have them on my palms and soles of feet - even one on my little finger print.
I get new ones all the time. I went to the doctors about a yr ago to ask a about them and he was very dismissive and said not to worry about them (I'd read somewhere that if you have over 100, you should get them checked). I reckon I have 6-700!

BettyRooster · 09/04/2015 21:06

Having lots of moles can be related to increased longevity. More moles, less aging. My 98 year old grandma is covered with them.

BestZebbie · 09/04/2015 21:14

A variety of moles that I've had most of my life (the exact positions and sizes changed a bit at puberty but is stable again now, probably about 30ish).

However after pregnancy I developed a huge scabby sort of brown ragged-edged mole in my belly button that was spreading on a week-by-week basis, so I went to the GP in a panic and he dissolved most of it off with solvent wipes! He did assure me that it was definitely not encrusted dirt though :D, apparently there is a type of perfectly healthy mole that usually just looks like the others when it is small but sometimes can go on a mad growing spree, but wiping it off tends to put a stop to that.

MaidOfStars · 09/04/2015 21:30

I have loads of them. Most are small and barely raised. I have one on the top of my left boob that I keep an eye on and that gets an extra special blob of sun cream.

My husband counts them to go to sleep. I have constellations on my back, apparently. And a neat line of them diagonally from right rib cage to left hip. Few on my legs though, now that I think about it - in fact, only one that I can think of.

Imachocolateportal · 09/04/2015 21:39

I have about an average amount but have quite a few atypical.

There was one which had had become particularly strang (developed a dark area and had become a hard lump, like a pea under the skin) and thanks to some wise from mumsneters I went to the doctor despite feeling a bit silly. The doctor sent me to the dermatologist who says that he can't see anything that makes him thinks it is sinister, however he cannot explain why it is behaving the way it is. So I will be having it cut out in a few weeks. So that means I won't have to worry about that one again, and my mind has already been put at rest!

If you have a mole you are worried about please go to the doctor. I wasn't going to as I felt silly, but none of the docs I have seen have made me feel silly at all!

DamselNotInHerDress · 09/04/2015 21:48

I've got about 30.
Mostly small, what I would describe as freckles, but have one on my chest that used to be flat and is now raised with a slightly uneven outline and sometimes gets quite itchy.
When I read threads about moles, I think I should get it checked out, then promptly forget about it!

prittsticksellotape · 09/04/2015 21:50

probably 10. one on my cheek. one on my fanny. one on my shoulder and probably some other random ones.

KingCrimson · 09/04/2015 22:45

I have loads of moles.

I had an atypical one a few years ago, and it was removed under local anaesthetic, leaving a very small scar. It wasn't actually cancerous, but I was advised that it was pre-cancerous so it was better to remove it.

I now have to go to the dermatologist for a check-up every year. So far I haven't had any more atypical moles, but I often have patches of keratosis, which have to be removed occasionally, because they can also degenerate.

PoppyField · 09/04/2015 22:46

I am very mole-y. Typical Celtic skin. I have had three removed from my face for vanity. Last year I had a shallow melanoma on my arm. It was cut out under a local anaesthetic (not enough, IMO) by a specialist dermo-doc. The mole in question was less than a centimetre long, the scar on my right bingo wing is bloody huge - at least 10 cms. They cut out an elipse and stitched it back together. Then after the biopsy was positive they cut out some more (fucking painful, anaesthetic was rubbish) and stitched that back together.

At least I am now on the six-monthly consultant/dermo-check routine at a good hospital. But it's a worry. I was told not to bother with one of those 'Mole Shops' that are commercial operations, go to your GP and get a quick referral instead. If a proper dermo clinic has any doubts, they will whip it out and then test it. No point in taking pretty photographs of ones that already look dodgy.

That said, taking photos of your moles to spot changes, or having a loved one inspect you regularly, is a good idea.

clopper · 09/04/2015 22:56

I have hundreds of moles. I'm fair skinned and have never really sunbathed much. My parents also seem to have a lot- is it genetic? I also seem to have a lot of raised marks and bumps especially all over my chest and neck, I'm convinced that it is called seborrheic keratosis looking at Dr Google! Not sure if I should be worried or not by this. They look like large flat moles but occasionally the top layer 'flakes off'. They only seem to get bigger. I hate them.

I have dozens but most are very small and freckle like rather than raised.

I always envied a friend with smooth and freckle free even skin tone. She always holidayed in the UK.

One year she went for two weeks to Dubai and sunbathed every day. She came back with freckles and moles all over her shoulders and arms.

RedCheckedTablecloth · 09/04/2015 23:12

When I was in Malaysia there were dozens of clinics advertising mole removal and I was actually stopped in the street by 'mole removal' experts and 'mole readers' who read your moles like a tarot reader would.
