There is lots of stuff at work that needs to be finished early and I'm the only one that can really do it.

On my payslips is does always have no of overtime hours at 1, 1.5 and 2 so presumably they do sometimes pay this?

However as I'm one of the higher paid in the company this pushes it to asking for 50 pounds an hour.

Will I look grabby to only do the work for this amount? Tbh its not worth giving up a weekend otherwise and will get higher rate taxed on all of this

If you don't value your time, who will?

ssd · 08/04/2015 18:50

surely you've been asked to do overtime before?

AyeAmarok · 08/04/2015 19:14

You'll most likely only get time and a half at most.

ljwales · 08/04/2015 19:17

Not with this company I've never done overtime before.

Why is 1.5 the most? It does have an option for 2 on the payslip

Time and a quarter is generally for a few hours after work, time and a half for weekends, double time for bank holidays.

Most professionals on a decent salary (IME) don't get any paid overtime, they are expected just to do what ours it takes to do the job. Not right, but usual.

BrieAndChilli · 08/04/2015 19:19

I would imagine 1.5 is weekends and normal over time and 2 is for bank holidays and xmas etc

^^This.

You only get paid overtime in my organisation if you're on a low grade. Those of us on higher grades are expected to suck it up.

SilverBirch2015 · 08/04/2015 19:22

Sometimes there are old pay rates still appearing on payroll systems, possibly there staff still on older terms of employment. Years ago, somewhere I worked would pay x2 for hours worked on Sundays.

I would check your employment contract terms.

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/04/2015 19:28

Where I work 1.5 is for normal evening overtime, 2 is for weekends and some bank holidays.

YANBU at all, by the way. Your free time has value, regardless of how good your basic wage is.

Theycallmemellowjello · 08/04/2015 19:32

I don't think it will look bad. You can phrase it tactfully! Think of some reasons why you deserve it and go in with something prepared. DIY ask don't get!

SurlyCue · 08/04/2015 19:34

Certainly ask for double time. If you are the only person who can do the work and they need it done by a certain time then you are valuable to them, YOU tell THEM the value of your free time. They can either choose to pay your rate or choose an alternative option. Women are often prone to feeling guilty about asking for more money or what they think theyre worth in business, men seem to have less trouble with it. Think like a man and set your boundaries, others wont observe them unless you enforce them. Good luck OP. You have bargaining power on this one.

flowery · 08/04/2015 19:37

What does your contract say?

I wouldn't assume that because there is a space on your payslip for 1x, 1.5x and 2x overtime that your employer uses those options often or at all.

balletgirlmum · 08/04/2015 19:38

At our work the first overtime rate is for after 5pm up until 7pm & The first 5 hours on a Saturday

The higher rate is late evenings, After 5 hours on a Saturday & Sunday's.

I can't remember which rate applies to bank holidays.

balletgirlmum · 08/04/2015 19:39

Overtime is only paid to hourly paid workers who submit a time sheet, there is no overtime to salaried staff.

WatchOutForGoblins · 08/04/2015 19:41

Damn, I am inthe wrong industry! Catering. And all our hours are after five and ots shifts are longer then eight hours!

IWannaHoldYourHand · 08/04/2015 19:45

If you ask, what's the worst that can happen?

I really hate the attitude that you should work extra hours and just suck it up. If the work can't be done by the allocated staff, in the allocated time, they need to pay for more people, or more time.

ljwales · 08/04/2015 20:54

Yes I hate the suck it up attitude and won't go along with that after previous job.

Well yes usually would never get paid overtime for the office staff, but it is a rare thing and the work is important. The owner of the company has said "whatever it takes to get the work done - overtime or holiday".

I would either want to be paid double or taken as toil on days of my choice. Is this too blunt to just say that? Should I try to get more days back as holiday than I worked for? Maybe 3 days for working the weekend?

Blankiefan · 08/04/2015 20:56

Looks like your salary is c.£50k pa. I'd be very surprised if you're eligible for OT. You wouldn't be where I work - you'd be expected to do the work as part of your normal working week.

ljwales · 08/04/2015 20:57

As I said its not part of my contract, its a offer at the moment as the work is important and early deadline

OP posts:
sanfairyanne · 08/04/2015 20:57

maybe ask for toil?

SunsetSongster · 08/04/2015 20:58

I would expect TOIL if you are working significantly over your normal hours at that salary rather than paid overtime. If you don't ask though.....

BravingSpring · 08/04/2015 21:03

I'm on too high a pay band to get overtime but I keep a record of my hours and take TOIL, I'm part time though so maybe slightly different.

Want2bSupermum · 08/04/2015 21:14

I would def ask for it and if they say no ask for them to take some work off you so you can get through the work during your regular hours. If the work needs to get done they need to reward you or hire someone to help you get through it. They could quite easily go to a temp agency for someone.

Having worked loads of overtime on a low salaried job in accounting I would be very careful that overtime doesn't become something that is expected. It sucks working late and over weekends.

shewept · 08/04/2015 22:03

I think asking for double time could come across as a bit ott. I would ask for 1.5 unless the work includes weekends. If it includes weekends, then the double time. Or toil. I personally would prefer toil
