I took my children to a local attraction today and we took part in a science experiment workshop. They had few tables for the amount of participants so a Dad joined us on our table with his young son. He then asked us where we were from and if we lived locally. When I said the town we lived in, he pulled a mildly horrified face and said "ooohh"!. I was bloody outraged at the rudeness of him, I just can't believe peoples lack of manners. We don't live in the best town in the area by a long shot but I hardly think that was called for! We then had to sit politely whilst he over parented his son by loudly questioning him on every tiny science based fact. He even tried to do it to my kids as well. I just wish I had had the balls to pick him up on his snobby attitude but I just didn't want to cause a scene. Is it me or was he a complete knobber?

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 08/04/2015 00:09

I get this all the time as I live in a place with infamous reputation. He was rude! I try not to let snidey remarks bother me op but it is hurtful. Sad

MrsRhettButler · 08/04/2015 00:11

Ahh Maud that's community right there Smile
I'm from a 'rough' area but I love it because of the community spirit that you just don't get in other areas.
My hometown has been mentioned

IFinishedTheBiscuits · 08/04/2015 00:31

I'm from Cambridge which is full of rude people like that!! If it's not postcode they'll find another reason to look down on you.

Jux · 08/04/2015 00:46

Purley.

I live in a town which is deemed to be dead from the neck up Grin. I tend to agree, actually, as it mostly is. It's also known as Chav Town, which it also predominantly is.

Neither applies to me personally, of course Wink. DH is, naturally, a super cool dude, and dd is angelic.

SouthernComforts · 08/04/2015 00:46

Ha my town is on here. I just don't tell people where I'm from. I name the nearby city and pray they don't ask for specifics Grin

Birmingham?

tartyflette · 08/04/2015 01:00

Harlow! (I'm an essex girl so i'm allowed to say it)!

PickleSarnie · 08/04/2015 09:29

It's impossible bitoutofpractice, I've tried and tried but have failed miserably to say Dudley without a West Midlands accent. It's just not possible.

Billabong21 · 08/04/2015 09:39

I thought Creepy Crawley too and he's from Horsham. Or it could be Brighton and he's from, 'Hove actually!'

MissMooMoo · 08/04/2015 09:40

yep very rude!
I had a woman say to me 'oh who wants to live in x' once, I promptly told her I live there and love it!

Jakadaal · 08/04/2015 09:44

My less than 'D' SIL once described where we live as a one horse town - thank god she doesn't live here otherwise it would be a two horse townWink

whitecandles · 08/04/2015 09:47

An ex's dad, when he found out where I was from, said, 'GOD! I own a factory up there! Horrible place! Why would anyone live there?'

I come from rural Aberdeenshire! Beautiful part of the world. He lived on some middle class endlessly tedious estate.

WHY WOULD YOU SAY IT.

MmeGuillotine · 08/04/2015 11:31

How rude!

I grew up in rural Aberdeenshire too (although I was born further north in Morayshire) and although I don't have entirely fond memories of the place, I can still concede that it's incredibly beautiful.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 08/04/2015 14:11

Very rude , and as a girl who grew up in Basildon I used to get this a lot. Now I've moved to a different town and find that if I tell people where I live they often assume that I must be posh /rich / a snob. Amazing what a change of postcode can do to people's perceptions of you!

AliaMairns · 08/04/2015 14:29

Another Basildon resident here. I also get this a lot, but to be fair, it is justified.

VenusRising · 08/04/2015 15:37

Did your kids learn anything from this guy, or was he mansplaining too much? Sometimes adults can be too caught up in their own issues to appreciate that kids need to figure out things for themselves.

I wouldn't give him a second thought OP.
It's not where we come from, it's where we are headed that's important.
No need to feel annoyed, hope your kids enjoyed the science workshop.

ohtheholidays · 09/04/2015 21:18

Is it Reading? That's where were from and the part we live in is considered to be really rough.People always ask me if I'm sure when I say where I live.

Hardly anyone ever believes that I've always lived in the area I live in.Apparently were far to polite,God knows what that means.

Yet the area we live in is really expensive to buy in or rent.

Branleuse · 09/04/2015 21:32

Clacton

Tollygunge · 09/04/2015 21:39

Romford I'm guessing?

ArgentinianMalbec · 09/04/2015 22:15

Another vote for Harlow here!

UterusUterusGhali · 09/04/2015 22:56

Bilericay?

Clacton?

Basingrad?

JellyDots · 09/04/2015 23:02

I'm willing so bet it was Gosport, but don't worry, I'm still here... I do what southern said, and describe it as not far from Portsmouth!
