To think Lush isn't actually lush at all...

I really cannot see what the fascination with this shop is. DD age 12 begged to go there today to spend some of her birthday money. The place made me itch as soon as I stepped inside with the sickly overpowering scent.

DD wanted some bath bombs, some of which were over £6! Each! I tried explaining that they were probably no good for her skin with all that artificial colouring and scent added but she really wanted them and as it was her money she bought two.

My shopping bag and her bedroom now reeks of the smell of these things. What are they made of and are the products really as natural as they are made out to be? I was astounded at the price of most of the products and equally astounded that the shop was full with the tills ringing a brisk trade the whole time we were in there. Are the products any good?

I always wonder whether those who claim Lush is 100% natural have actually read any ingredients lists on their website?

Yes! I like many Lush products, but they are not and never have been "100% natural". Personally I appreciate that the synthetics used are kept to a minimum (they are usually at the bottom of the quantitative ingredients list) and are always clearly listed. I also like that many products are packaging-free.

I use the shampoo bars and sometimes splash out on a lotion (their body lotions are generally very good) or one of the bars like Buffy / King of Skin / Aqua Mirabilis.

I do read the Mitherings blog and agree the top brass seem quite hypocritical and unpleasant Sad

Of course they aren't 100% natural, it would be impossible to have such a wide product range with only natural ingredients, not to mention prohibitively expensive. They are far more open about their ingredients than most manufacturers and produce good information about their products, they also listen to their customers, for example with the self preserving versions of some of their products.

I see the PR are out....

I worked for Lush for a long time. There are some talented people there with good intentions, but I think the quality of the product has greatly reduced in recent years. They also have a bizarre cult like devotion from their (usually young) staff, despite their illegal working practices. Morale is low as the founders unqualified children were given huge job titles. Not unexpected of course, but other people do the hard work for them behind the scenes and you're sacked if you mention it.

I love dream cream though!

londonrach · 09/04/2015 08:12

I cant enter as the smell makes me feel very very ill. No idea re cost as i havent gone through the door yet and have had to cross the street. Smeels very artifical to me! Never busy when i pass.

londonrach · 09/04/2015 08:13

Smells! Typo

bigbuttons · 09/04/2015 08:13

It's so easy to replicate many of their products at home for a fraction of the cost. I like the idea of lush but it is so hideously over priced.

Branleuse · 09/04/2015 08:19

I wish they would stop using SLS in their shampoo and shower gel.
I love the smell of some of them, but SLS makes me itch

I do love some of their perfumes though

scarletforya · 09/04/2015 08:22

I don't get it either. The stench of the stuff makes me nauseous!

tallulahturtle · 10/04/2015 11:51

I used to shop in Lush but after their support for the hunt sabs. I will no longer shop there.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 10/04/2015 11:59

Their massage bars are gorgeous (if you have someone willing to give you a massage with them!) but I really don't understand the attraction of the bath bombs etc. Someone recommended the Buffy exfoliating bar but tbh it's no better than a cheap body scrub from Wilkos and is a lot messier - it has sort of welded itself to the edge of my bath like a sandy limpet in a gritty sticky puddle. I'm trying not to think about how many cheap body scrubs I could have bought for the tenner or so that this lump of grit set me back! Grin

Birdsgottafly · 10/04/2015 12:05

My DDs like their stuff and I'm happy to buy from them because I'm Vegan and it's in my price range.

There are lots of different reasons why we make the shopping choices we do.

BananaLeaf · 10/04/2015 12:15

YANBU it's vile. I get an instant headache as soon as I walk past one.

Libitina · 10/04/2015 12:22

YY to the pp who say they get headaches and feel itchy just from the smell when you walk past the shop.

SunnyBaudelaire · 10/04/2015 12:30

totally vile and sickly and overpriced.

squoosh · 10/04/2015 12:37

Lush is a load of stinky old crap.

Working in an abbatoir would be more pleasing to my olfactory system.

SunnyBaudelaire · 10/04/2015 12:40

lol or a fur factory

ImpishElf · 10/04/2015 12:51

Love Lush. Body shop too overpriced for their products. Lush face scrubs and masks are lovely to use and love the fragrances of almost all products. Discovered the grass fragranced stuff the other day - wierdly nice and uplifting Smile

ImpishElf · 10/04/2015 12:53

Agree bath bombs are too pricey - but agree with SugarMice on massage bars - they are gorgeous!

GatoradeMeBitch · 10/04/2015 14:32

Their bath bombs give me horrendous itching of the bits. I gave up after the last one. It had glitter in it (glutton for punishment) and left my fanny feeling like I'd coated it in crushed glass Angry

Plus I don't like the way the staff lie. I know it's their job to make you feel good about your purchases, but how can everything I point to be your absolute favourite?

squoosh · 10/04/2015 14:49

Warning: May Cause Glitching (glittery itching) Of The Fanny.

ChocolateCherry · 11/04/2015 09:59

Oh yes bath bombs def have thrush potential. And I don't like the idea of stuff (glitter, petals etc) floating in my bath. It's like having a bath in soup Confused
