To think Lush isn't actually lush at all...

I really cannot see what the fascination with this shop is. DD age 12 begged to go there today to spend some of her birthday money. The place made me itch as soon as I stepped inside with the sickly overpowering scent.

DD wanted some bath bombs, some of which were over £6! Each! I tried explaining that they were probably no good for her skin with all that artificial colouring and scent added but she really wanted them and as it was her money she bought two.

My shopping bag and her bedroom now reeks of the smell of these things. What are they made of and are the products really as natural as they are made out to be? I was astounded at the price of most of the products and equally astounded that the shop was full with the tills ringing a brisk trade the whole time we were in there. Are the products any good?

I can't bear the smell, but I brave it once a year or so for a pot of hand cream, it is the only thing that works on my mum's sore and cracking skin on her hands and it sorted out mine after I had frostbite. As far as I can tell the stuff is magic.

Postchildrenpregranny · 07/04/2015 01:22

Daughter uses shower gel (??Fox) which is supposed to help with PMT She swears it does.

Icimoi · 07/04/2015 07:28

What's the objection to support for hunt saboteurs? These days they police illegal hunting. What's wrong with that?

ChocolateCherry · 07/04/2015 07:40

It's not my thing at all. Mil and sli love it and we've had bath bombs as gifts but they look like items that dc used to bring home that they'd made at preschool. Lumps of something suspicious rolled in glitter and dust and popcorn Confused

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 07/04/2015 07:40

I have to shop online as I hate the smell of the shops, but I love their Flying Fox shower gel, weird smell to it but such a great feeling. And the rockstar soap smells beautiful. Best product hands-down is their Toothy Tabs, takes a bit of getting used to but they work so well!

Emmaswan · 07/04/2015 07:44

They are also linke dto the Hunt Saboteurs which, whatever your opinion on hunting, are a terrorist, violent masked group.

Emmaswan · 07/04/2015 07:45

These days they police illegal hunting. What's wrong with that?

They don't at all. They sab perfectly legal hunts ( is is still legal to fox hunt - check the Hunting act in detail). They pulled a friends child from his horse last month and attacked a 65 year old man.

Cantbelievethisishappening · 07/04/2015 07:50

They sab perfectly legal hunts

Grin

They pulled a friends child from his horse last month

I call absolute bullshit on that

TiltedPenguin · 07/04/2015 07:52

I don't agree with hunting, but have been horrified at the actions of hunt sabs in a village where friends live. I have seen them screaming in the faces of children (under 10s), calling them cunts and scum, pushing and shoving very close to them and terrifying them. I have seen them throwing things at cars - some connected to hunting, but some just people who happen to be passing by at the wrong time.

Coupled with reading the Mitherings from Morningside blog, it's not a company I want to support.

PinkFondantFancy · 07/04/2015 07:56

I don't use their bath bombs but their face cream and Dream Cream body cream are fantastic - very few ingredients and no chemical muck in them. I also like their approach to packaging, shame others don't follow suit on that.

Emmaswan · 07/04/2015 07:57

Can't believe.

You need to educate yourself on the Hunting Act. It is perfectly LEGAL to flush foxes with hounds but they must be shot or taken out with a bird of prey. So fox hunts will hunt withing the law.
Many hunts these days are trails anyway.
I can provide the video evidence of the assault but not until after the CPS has done with it, ok?

sanfairyanne · 07/04/2015 07:58

the worst hunt sabbers are probably just undercover police, if past actions are anything to go by.

Effnjeff · 07/04/2015 08:01

cant walk passed that shop without the smell inducing a migraine !

FanFuckingTastic · 07/04/2015 08:01

We love it, me and the kids go for treats for our pamper evenings.

PeruvianFoodLover · 07/04/2015 08:01

The best way of putting a pre-teen girl off any product/brand is to actively approve of it, in my experience - most would rather die than use the same cosmetics as their Mum!

Conversely, if you want them to use a particular brand, then disapprove of it and list all the reasons why - you'll never separate them from it, then!

Ladyflip · 07/04/2015 08:07

icimoi it is actually the role of the Police to police illegal hunting. That is one of the reasons it is wrong to support hunt sabs.

And Lush stinks.

HeyDuggee · 07/04/2015 08:09

My 40+ year old DH introduced me to their soaps about 7 years back, when there was only a handful of them in London.

It was only when we moved out to the suburbs and a local one opened a year ago, we realised it was constantly mobbed by teenagers. Especially on weekends where they do "parties". I admit that has put me off the store a bit and I can't help but think it's what body shop use to be like in its day.

My kids love their bubble bath bombs (the kind where you break a piece from) and although pricey, bath time is actually something they look forward to instead of being dragged to... Priceless Grin

BeeInYourBonnet · 07/04/2015 08:09

Used to LOVE their Buffy the Backside Slayer soap. Used it for years.
With you on the bath bombs though!

BsshBosh · 07/04/2015 08:22

I find the Lush stores here in London that I go to (as DD loves their bath bombs) far too frantic and frenetic. However, their facial cleansers and moisturisers are perfect for my skin and I am very partial to their butterball bath bomb.

ohtheholidays · 07/04/2015 08:28

I love they're products,so do our daughters and our sons.

Bought the oldest some of the guys bits in there for his birthday last week(19)and he loved them. One was for his stinky feet,so more of a gift to all of us. Grin

Marmaladedandelions · 07/04/2015 08:32

violence is wrong and should not happen, but I can't get too worked up about 'cunts' and 'scum' to describe people, of any age, who get pleasure from the torture of living creatures.

I like the smell of Lush although I only use their products occasionally and can sympathise with the poster who found it made her sick. When pregnant with Dd1 DHS bought a mulled wine plug in air freshener which still has the power to make me heave.

I do think it's a shame, linking to the OP, that you couldn't just smile and let your DD buy what SHE wanted without commenting or trying to talk her out of it. My mum used to do this and I hated it.

Cantbelievethisishappening · 07/04/2015 08:34

Emma
Yes I am fully aware of the hunting act. I used to hunt a lot myself. Strangely, the two hunts I went out with used to 'flush' the foxes with the whole pack.

Ah yes.... the fake trails that seems to criss cross over roads, railways and through fields of pregnant ewes, people's gardens complete with terrier men on quads.

If I had a pound for every story Ive read one of the from the hunt mob which starts with 'I had a friend.....' I would be lying in a hammock on the Maldives.

I still call bullshit Smile

OP YANBU. Although my daughter loves their products

Ifyourawizardwhydouwearglasses · 07/04/2015 08:41

What's the objection to support for hunt saboteurs? These days they police illegal hunting. What's wrong with that?

Where to start......

They are masked group of violent vigilantes. The aggressive and intimidating side of the animal rights movement.
They attack, bully and abuse children, adults, the elderly, and horses and hounds alike.

Whatever your views on hunting, supporting this group is plain wrong in and intelligent persons eyes.

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 07/04/2015 08:46

We walked past yesterday, the conversation went thus:
DD (2yo): that smeeeells!
Me: mmm yes, does it smell nice?
DD: silence no.

Yadnbu.

TrulyTurtles · 07/04/2015 08:48

Anyway, I much preferred Cosmetics to go. Their stuff was fantastic. Lush I find overly scented and over priced ( and have you experienced a glittery foof after some of the bombs?) But customer service is excellent, I was given a bottle of their very expensive face cream (in store, the staff can do this occasionally) and it was off. I contacted them in case it was on off batch and they sent me a big parcel of stuff back.
