Over your lifetime?

OP posts:
NickiFury · 06/04/2015 14:23

Only once very badly, in Nerja in August, in my thirties so certainly d enough to know better. It was so bad that I was shivering all night, I didn't understand why at the time but was told later by a doctor that I was probably physically in shock Shock

Flissypix · 06/04/2015 14:24

As a child on every holiday and through every summer. It was awful!
I went to Greece at 17 with my now dh went to water park, even though I had water resistant factor 50 on I got 3rd degree burns had to go to hospital, was very very sick and couldn't wear clothes the rest of the holiday (wore my dhs instead) I had to sit inside the remaining few days.
Now the slightest peek of sun and I slather the cream on, use P30 plus factor 50 top up and even have a UV swimming jacket for water parks now and sit in the shade mostly.

Bluecarrot · 06/04/2015 14:27

Just the odd wee patch that I've missed with sunscreen. I'm prob an over user of ss!

Sallystyle · 06/04/2015 14:28

All the time growing up.

My mum put sun screen on me but it never really worked. I guess she never reapplied it enough.

I'm obsessed with skin cancer but have been caught out once in the last few years when the sun managed to burn me when I was wearing a thin top.

JemimaPuddlePop · 06/04/2015 14:37

Once very badly at about age 13...I was out with a friends family, should have reapplied my sunscreen and didn't bother. I burnt my face, shoulders and chest so that they were red and peeling.

As an adult I've had 'too much sun' a handful of times. Slightly red, sensitive shoulders...but nothing that a bit of after sun didn't fix by morning so not what I'd think of as a burn.

BackforGood · 06/04/2015 14:40

Don't think I have in the last 25 - 30 years, well, maybe except where I'd missed a bit of me with the sun cream.
In the 70s though - LOADS. We just weren't as aware as we were now.

MiniTheMinx · 06/04/2015 14:42

Shoulders, once in Weymouth aged 15. Shall never forget the bloody horrid headache that seemed to accompany it. Maybe I had sun stroke? I don't know but I lay awake for hours burning and feeling cold, sick and sore. Never again.

ISpyPlumPie · 06/04/2015 14:53

Only a couple of times to the point of peeling but have gone red many times. Am ridiculously pale and have absolutely no ability to tan. As a result am obsessive about sun protection for the DC who seem to have inherited my lack of colouring.

PurpleSwift · 06/04/2015 14:59

Between the ages of 13-15 I got it bad a couple of times because I didn't want to wear cream when on holiday. I had chunks of skin pealing at one point. Never since then though, I'm going abroad for the first time in 7 years next month though so I'll have to be careful

BalloonSlayer · 06/04/2015 15:07

A couple of times.

however . . .

My DSis emigrated to Australia aged around 20 more than 30 years ago. I think she has aged more because of the sun there and she has had her fair share of sunburn I think. But she is nothing like some of the older ladies you see in Australia whose skin is like something else . . . I'm sure it is the same for some men too but for some reason it was the women I noticed. Anyway, she had to have some sort of skin check and the guy said to her, "Can I ask you a question? You weren't born in Australia, were you?" DSis said "No, I'm English, but I can assure you I have done my fair share of reckless sunbathing over the years since I moved here." He said "No, your skin is FAR less damaged than most Australians and that is simply because you did not spend your childhood here."

Sobering thought.

CarbeDiem · 06/04/2015 15:12

2 or 3 times severe enough to make me cry.
The worst of those times was when I was pregnant with dc1 during the 1995 red hot Indian summer.
I had put suncream on my exposed bits as well as my face, waited about 30 mins before going out but for some reason it didn't work - It seemed I burned worse than not using protection. Backs of my legs were red raw and I remember being stuck in during the day for about a week after as the sun/heat still hurt through my clothes :(

Notso · 06/04/2015 15:34

Once badly on my shoulders when I was 16, I had two huge blisters. My friend persuaded me to use a tanning oil. I started a new job the day after and was in complete agony all week.

Other than that I've had a bit of pinkness on my nose but nothing else. I tend to stay pale. I really hate being hot though so avoid the sun as much as possible, I also hate wearing sunscreen and prefer to cover up with clothing.

carrie74 · 06/04/2015 15:49

Not as bad as many here, never blistering or heat stroke. I was born in a hot climate and lived there til I was 10, and we were all well aware of the dangers of too much sun. My mum always had a hat and was as covered as she could be, although she also has vitiligo, so had to cover up as parts of her skin have no melanin, so no protection at all. My dad has typically English fair skin and used to fall asleep in the sun: he now regularly has small patches of skin cancer that he self treats at home with a chemo cream that burns off tumours as they appear (mainly on his face). My brother (nearly 50) is waiting to have skin cancer as he was in the hot climate his whole life, and pretty reckless as a surfing teen.

I'm terrible, though, I adore being in the sun, it makes me feel alive, so I do try to make sure I'm protected when in hot climates. I don't burn that easily, though, so am luckier than many.

JigsawsAreAllLittlePieces · 06/04/2015 17:01

I fell asleep on the beach on holiday in Kos and woke up to find I couldn't move as the sun had been beating directly down on me and my then husband didn't think to wake me or move the parasol so I wasn't in direct sun. Blistered back and shoulders and heat stroke. I felt ill for days.

Since then I've been probably over-cautious and always wear sun cream and/or hat and cover up/move into the shade if needed.

Bambambini · 06/04/2015 18:21

How can folk not have burnt? Especially if you were a child of the 60's - 80's? You go out in the sun - generally there is a good chance you will burn.

Bambambini · 06/04/2015 18:22

And I had at least 2 or 3 (possibly more) very severe sunburns. I do worry about it.

DownAtFraggleRock · 06/04/2015 18:44

Oh god, loads as a kid in the 80's - never to the point of blisters though. I'm fair and burn really easily. I once got a burnt face at Brands Hatch in November Hmm

I find I tan much easier as I get older - I now live somewhere where the sun is really strong so we're careful to slather on the factor 30 - and I can burn still using that but tend to start to tan quicker than when I was young apart from my legs

DH was surprised when the Dr told him his freckles were sun damage. How can he not know that?!? Grin

BeaufortBelle · 06/04/2015 18:59

I'm olive skinned and go very brown :). But have burnt three times. Once when I was about 17 and laid in the sun for about six hours with factor 2 on because "I didn't burn" - I never had, because I'd never sat still in it before. I didn't peel but it was very sore for about three days. The second time was in Greece when I was about 25 and it was just one shin. I was very very brown and it was the end of the holiday but I think I must have "missed" with the factor and it got very sore that night and blistered badly. The third time was in Portugal when I was about 33 and should have known better but we had had awful weather and on the one sunny afternoon I sat in the sun without factor for far too long. It stang and my chest peeled when we got home.

And once not so badly when the children were small and diving off a wall in Cornwall and I couldn't leave them to go back to DH to rub in the factor or reach it myself.

My DH is fair and freckles and manages to burn a bit every single year. Every single year he is reminded to wear a hat and used the cream. Every single year he forgets or won't.

backtowork2015 · 06/04/2015 19:41

I remember an old school friend of mine sat out on a hot sunny day wth olive oil on her legsShock when she came into school the next day her shins looked like they'd been bbq'd. it was horrific, the skin was literally raw and weeping. its a sight I will never forget. big reminder to everyone who has been saying they tan easily....any colour change is skin damage...there is absolutely no safe tan. buy a bottle of fake stuff if you want a tan

NobodyLivesHere · 06/04/2015 19:42

Never. Even as a kid in the 80s who spent all summer in an outdoor swimming pool. I just don't have the kind of skin that burns. I have tan lines after 5 mins. I had a friend die of melanoma in my teens and have been very careful since.

MamaLazarou · 06/04/2015 19:50

Twice: once in Africa as a teenager and once at Wimbledon, watching the tennis.

fatlazymummy · 06/04/2015 20:00

bambambini not everyone burns in the sun.
My arms and legs and face and neck never burn which were the bits that would be mainly exposed as a child. We didn't spend much time on the beach as kids, so I wouldn't have worn a swimsuit outdoors much. I don't think I had vest tops either.
As an adult I don't lie sunbathe much, because it's boring to me.
My children have never been sunburnt either. I never put suncream on them unless I knew we'd be outside for more than an hour at least.

Goodtimes80 · 07/04/2015 17:12

Loads.

TheArchchancellorsHat · 07/04/2015 17:24

Only once - when I was a student my friend and I sat out in a park on a hot day and fell asleep. My legs burned but the rest of me was fine (I never usually get my legs out, maybe that's why). They were red and sore but didn't peel or anything.

I am dark and sallow / olive so normally just go a bit brown. I don't use suncream but I hate the heat so can normally be found skulking indoors or clinging to any available shady spot.

iwantgin · 07/04/2015 17:28

Too many.

Grew up in the70 s. I dont remember any sunscreen except DM bottle of Bergasol. Burmt every summer.

Then in the 80 s I used sunbeds often
My skin is definitely showing signs of having had too much sun. I have small white 'reverse freckles' and loads of freckles and moles.

That said I love the sun. Makes me feel so much more cheerful.
