OH and I disagree. He thinks eating a packet of crisps then handing the empty packet over at checkout to scan is perfectly acceptable but I think this is a no-no.

Where do you guys sit on this matter?

Definitely going to try a baguette next time

Foxyloxyatehennypenny · 04/04/2015 23:11

Blogs aren't for me thanks. There's enough pish blogs already, especially from parents who don't teach their children the word "no"

Too right. They can't scream with a baguette shoved in their mouths.

gamerchick · 04/04/2015 23:12

My husbands diabetic. Funnily enough we keep shit on us for low blood sugar. Yanno as you do....

Sparklingbrook · 04/04/2015 23:12

Yes, it's kind of them to let her pay when she was conscious again. Confused

When DS1 hit his head on the trolley handle when he sneezed the staff at the shop whisked him off to check on him (his lip was bleeding) and gave him 2 bars of chocolate. Disgusting really when you think about it.

Proudmummy2456 · 04/04/2015 23:13

I do it all the time Hmm

gamerchick · 04/04/2015 23:14

You feed your kids before you go. It's that pre emptive strike thing.

WorraLiberty · 04/04/2015 23:16

And what if you, I don't know, forgot to pack a drink for your toddler.
I don't think giving a drink when they're thirsty is 'placating'.

I don't know any adults who are battling with Fruit Shoot comfort drinking to be fair Grin

Which is why my post was about comfort eating/placating with food.

WorraLiberty · 04/04/2015 23:18

I could have got a whole french stick in my kid's mouths sideways Grin

OwlinaTree · 04/04/2015 23:20

littlemonsters you've never eaten something before paying for it? What about in a cafe or restaurant? Wink

CadMaryzCremeEggzAreASwizz · 04/04/2015 23:24

I didn't reward mine when they had tantrums, of course I didn't.

But I had three under four, so anticipated the tantrums and offered the food in advance Grin

I'm a great believer in bribery forward planning.

TelephoneEggGnawingMachine · 04/04/2015 23:24

Never do this. I see people doing it and I judge (in my head - I would never say anything). All DD gets as we're going round the supermarket, is her sippy cup of water. If she's good and/or hungry, she can have a piece of fruit when we leave.

justonemoretime2p · 04/04/2015 23:27

YANBU I fucking hate it, have some bloody restraint.

Sparklingbrook · 04/04/2015 23:27

Pre-empt the tantrum. Wink Give the breadstick in advance.

TelephoneEggGnawingMachine · 04/04/2015 23:28

Sleeponeday - I love that! "A lady is never rude unintentionally." Brilliant! Grin

msgrinch · 04/04/2015 23:28

yanbu I think it's uncouth and unnecessary. surely people can survive a food shop without eating.

EmeraldThief · 04/04/2015 23:30

I'm with you OP. Uncouth is probably the right word for it. I wouldn't dream of opening and eating or drinking something before is paid for it, it's probably not illegal but it just seems a bit entitled and well, disgusting. I'm shocked that some people think it's OK, can you seriously not wait until after you've paid?

If you are a diabetic surely you'd have snacks with you in case of a hypo striking?

ihatelego · 04/04/2015 23:31

have never understood this.. a couple of times if i've got to the supermarket and DS has been very hungry/thirsty (and ive been unprepared) i've got something, gone to the self scan, paid for it and then got on with shopping!

usualsuspect333 · 04/04/2015 23:32

Hahaha at fruit and water.

This thread is like a piss take of MN.

Aridane · 04/04/2015 23:33

Well, that's me told, I'm uncouth then!! ( confesses to drinking and paying for can of diet coke during supermarket shop)

OwlinaTree · 04/04/2015 23:33

I'm lolling so much at this thread, especially Matthew and the chicken bone!

I've eaten and drunk on occasion when I've just really needed something as feeling ill, but it's more to do with time management for me. To buy something then go off and eat it then come back and carry on shopping just take so long, and usually the reason I'm so hungry in there is because I've had such a busy day I've not had time to eat something before I go.

I really can't get worked up about this as an issue, as long as people pay at the till, so what?

UncertainSmile · 04/04/2015 23:34

I'm sure half of MN send their 'help' to the supermarket anyway.

LucyBabs · 04/04/2015 23:34

This thread is hilarious!!

A poster said "we only eat at home, at the kitchen table, after we've washed our hands. Fun times Grin

I ate a cream cake, my ds had grapes and my dd had a bag of popcorn while walking around aldi today. We did pay at the check out though Wink

Gruntfuttock · 04/04/2015 23:42

Why not take something with you, such as a banana or a drink , if your child has to have something as you shop? If it's you that's hungry or thirsty what's wrong with either waiting till you've finished shopping and paid for everything, or if you're really desperate, just go and pay for whatever it is you can't wait to eat or drink and then carry on and shop for everything else?
