OH and I disagree. He thinks eating a packet of crisps then handing the empty packet over at checkout to scan is perfectly acceptable but I think this is a no-no.

Where do you guys sit on this matter?

I do it pretty much every week, due to low blood sugar, should I wear a badge explaining so no-one thinks I'm uncouth?

PlumpingIsQuiteUpForThud · 04/04/2015 22:22

My kids are both under 4 and I can't remember a shopping trip where they didn't end up sharing a baguette with me tbh Blush

I don't do it if I'm by myself though.

whitewineandchocolate · 04/04/2015 22:25

Definitely uncouth!

pissedglitter · 04/04/2015 22:25

I can't believe how many people think it's ok to walk around a shop eating

Southeastdweller · 04/04/2015 22:26

Just bloody disgusting behaviour, apart from the odd exception. Another sign if how food-centric our society is.

And it's theft, isn't it?

pissedglitter · 04/04/2015 22:27

Yes it's considered theft

Sparklingbrook · 04/04/2015 22:27

It's not theft because you scan the wrapper. Unless you don't then that's theft. Grin

Foxyloxyatehennypenny · 04/04/2015 22:27

I wouldn't do it and have never allowed any of our kids to do it. It's horrible. I once watched a parent let her children demolish a French loaf on the way round a supermarket. There really is no need! It's very uncouth which is one of my favourite words

JeanneDeMontbaston · 04/04/2015 22:28

Is it really considered theft?

Obviously, I realize it's a pain for security guards who can't magically tell which people intend to pay, but could you actually be done for it? Surely not?

lastfanjoinparis · 04/04/2015 22:28

parabelle every week you go shopping during a low sugar episode? Hmm

OP posts:
PunkrockerGirl · 04/04/2015 22:29

YANBU. Definitely uncouth.

usualsuspect333 · 04/04/2015 22:29

I've never been arrested for giving my kids a packet of crisps from a multi pack.

Maybe it's because they had eaten the evidence.

Mrsstarlord · 04/04/2015 22:29

Definitely uncouth. If you are likely to get hungry / have low blood sugar, eat before you go(emergencies excepted).
Just seems to smack of cockiness or self importance to me. Have never done it, even with younger kids. When did people start to think that it was ok?

gamerchick · 04/04/2015 22:29

Afaic there are no exceptions. Take shit with you if you may need it or pay first.

Foxyloxyatehennypenny · 04/04/2015 22:30

My kids are both under 4 and I can't remember a shopping trip where they didn't end up sharing a baguette with me tbh

Why? Surely they're not hungry to need a baguette.

pissedglitter · 04/04/2015 22:30

Yes, up until the point of paying it is theft
You have eaten something without paying what else would it be called

MrsKoala · 04/04/2015 22:30

I couldn't get my shopping done if ds didn't get a cookie in Lidl. I have exactly the time he takes to eat it to get everything in the buggy and then paid for. it usually means 3 trips a week and me looking like i'm doing the trolley dash in supermarket sweep.

i don't hand over anything half eaten/covered in crumbs tho, i just say 'and a chocolate cookie, please' to the check out person. As if i could deny it - ds is usually covered in it.

Sparklingbrook · 04/04/2015 22:31

This thread is funny. Take your own snacks to the supermarket folks. Grin Otherwise you are all disgusting, uncouth shoplifters. Tsk.

daffsandtulips · 04/04/2015 22:31

why on earth is it theft when you're going to pay for it at the check out?

why on earth is eating something round a shop disgusting?

why on earth is letting a child eat something to keep them quiet whilst you shop a bad thing?

ridiculous. yabu

gamerchick · 04/04/2015 22:31

Although I do have the amuseds at the picture of mindless zombies nomming in the aisles.

Littlemonstersrule · 04/04/2015 22:32

I've never eaten anything before paying for it and I certainly wouldn't let children grow up believing its ok to do so. Children either need to be fed before shopping or take your own snacks that have already been paid for.

UncertainSmile · 04/04/2015 22:32

This thread reminds me of the weirdness that was the lying to get into theme parks/zoos one.

KatieScarlettreregged · 04/04/2015 22:32

Rationally it shouldn't be an issue, after all, where's the harm, really?
If you know you can and fully intend to pay, that is.
And if getting round Tesco without topping yourself when shopping with young children involves letting them graze, good for you, I will defend you to the death.
It just makes me think bleargh when I see a adult chomping down while doing their shop. Wonder why? It's not like they are harming anyone, it's just what comes into my head.

WorraLiberty · 04/04/2015 22:32

I think it's bad manners.

Sparklingbrook · 04/04/2015 22:32

Disgusting, uncouth, shoplifting zombies. It's a disgrace.
