OH and I disagree. He thinks eating a packet of crisps then handing the empty packet over at checkout to scan is perfectly acceptable but I think this is a no-no.

Where do you guys sit on this matter?

I'm still pondering the poster who says that her child can have 1 thing and goes on to defend it, before then saying that he can't have 10 things. Makes no sense. Either trolley-troughing is something you'll do, or you won't

I think it's the implication that children who are allowed a nice treat in the supermarket and rampaging round ripping open multiple packets and are given no boundaries at all. Which isn't true.

If you allow your children chocolate, are they allowed as much as they want all the time? By your logic, surely eating chocolate is ok or it isn't. Makes no sense.

The real vitriol on this thread really does seem to come from those who don't like it.

I don't care if people eat stuff, but I surprised at people eating greasy things like chicken wings - that does seem a bit off unless you have something to wipe fingers with.

This thread was funny, now it's all gone a bit weird.....

Exactly. That applies to anywhere you eat chicken wings. You wouldn't eat them at home or in a restaurant without cleaning your hands afterwards. Some people on this thread seem to think that the people who eat in supermarkets cannot do so without smearing grease everywhere.

OwlinaTree · 08/04/2015 22:35

So restaurants don't count as eating in public mccolonel.

Also a lot of those trolley-riding babies could be simultaneously eating and dumping in the aisles! Grin

I honestly had no idea there were so many people with such contempt for me and other supermarket eaters! Or even for people that eat anywhere in public! A whole society of people that hate to see people eating, bizarre! Never noticed any glares while walking around eating, but im not that observant..

BlueAndSwirly · 08/04/2015 22:36

I'm an adult, and perfectly capable of eating something without getting everything around me covered in grease. My home and office aren't covered in grease.

But it's not about just you. If 'eat while you shop' was something that was universally accepted and encouraged by supermarkets and everyone did it, then it's fairly inevitable that some customers would be messy eaters.

EvilTendency1 · 08/04/2015 22:37

No, never and the dcs have NEVER done it, they might have asked if out once or twice but the answer was always No.

I don't like it and I do think it's uncouth.

McColonel · 08/04/2015 22:37

Sorry, don't understand your point?

Sparklingbrook · 08/04/2015 22:39

McC, yes, they were all hiding behind the displays of baked beans watching you and judging presumably. Shock
Because, let's face it out of all the things you could possibly do to offend and outrage eating in a supermarket is the top spot. Shock I had no idea.

OwlinaTree · 08/04/2015 22:45

Sorry mccolonel I misunderstood your point! Grin

BlueAndSwirly · 08/04/2015 22:50

Has anyone on this thread said that? Confused

Sparklingbrook · 08/04/2015 22:52

Well this has been discussed furiously since Saturday evening Blue, and shows no sign of stopping. strong feelings about this most important of subjects. Wink

McColonel · 08/04/2015 22:55

That may be true, but it shouldn't stop me eating cleanly.

Some people are alcoholics - does that mean no one should be allowed to drink? Some people drive like twats - does that mean all driving should be banned?

Icimoi · 08/04/2015 22:56

I'm interested in people who eat things like grapes and nuts that are sold by weight and claim that they then pay for their goods at the checkout. How do you ensure you are paying the right amount?

BlueAndSwirly · 08/04/2015 22:57

Some people drive like twats - does that mean all driving should be banned?

Probably not a great idea in a supermarket.

polyhymnia · 08/04/2015 23:02

Sorry I don't like people eating as they shop and don't think it's necessary.

McColonel · 08/04/2015 23:18

My wife says i should leave this thread alone now. I don't normally do what she tells me, but this time i think she's probably right.

It's been fun!

EastMidsMummy · 08/04/2015 23:25

That may be true, but it shouldn't stop me eating cleanly.

It's not about being unclean, it's about being uncouth. Eating in a fucking shop is fucking uncouth.

EastMidsMummy · 08/04/2015 23:26

And yes, swearing is also uncouth.

Whatthefucknameisntalreadytake · 08/04/2015 23:46

Maybe uncouth isn't the worst thing to be. I've definitely been called worse! Why is it so bad to be uncouth, it doesn't mean nasty or dishonest or aggressive, just means a bit rough around the edges doesn't it?

sleeponeday · 09/04/2015 00:56

Given the concern for supermarket workers, and the oft-voiced statement that you can't possibly know how much your purchases weigh until you get to the till... my own supermarket chain has a self-service option whereby you weigh an item, and then stick the barcode on the bag. This saves the other people in the queue, as well as hassle for the staff. If, you know, we're all being so terribly bothered about the welfare of others, then using this option seems a good idea, no?

EastMidsMummy · 09/04/2015 07:11

Not if it encourages uncouth people to eat in supernarkets, no.

ThursdayLast · 09/04/2015 07:27

The uncouth already eat in the shop Grin

OnlyLovers · 09/04/2015 10:12

IMO 'uncouth' is just what someone calls you if they decide your behaviour does not match their idea of what behaviour could be.

In other words, it's a meaningless judgement.

PunkrockerGirl · 09/04/2015 23:57

Good grief, McColonel, you really couldn't let this go could you?!
Nobody's got the time or inclination to wait for you to quit while you're ahead because it's not going to happen pal Wink
