Seriously why do people do this? Just seen a friends insta who has baked the poor cado with an egg in the hole. Degrading all the lovely fats

The best meal I ever ate started with prawns and avocado, I could cry for wanting to eat that meal again!

Baking avocado, what fresh hell is this?

flora717 · 04/04/2015 12:16

I haven't ever tried that. That's lunch sorted!Grin

AlternativeTentacles · 04/04/2015 12:28

Have any of you tried the Jack White Guacamole recipe - more like a tomato and avocado salad but anyhows. I make it twice a week. It kicks ass. I have slightly adapted it below:

Dice one avocado and put into a dish. Add a few diced toms - home grown or on the vine for best results. Add a finely chopped onion. And a finely chopped chilli. And the juice of half a lime [fresh, not that plastic lime stuff]. Add a handful of freshly cut coriander leaves, again finely chopped. Mix. Eat within 30 mins of making. Makes my eyes do that backwards roll every time.

My friend fries slices of avocado. Confused
The internet is full of ways to cook it. All wrong. It should be eaten raw with marmite or Nutella.

Haggisfish · 04/04/2015 12:52

Actually j had a baked avocado once and it was delicious.

TwoAndTwoEqualsChaos · 04/04/2015 14:14

I once had avacado baked in cream once. It was very rich and I wasn't convinced by the texture.

CaTsMaMmA · 04/04/2015 14:24

I really want to like avocados and Bloody Marys but I can't

I have really tried.

I do wonder if it is because they are never properly ripe when you buy them? Maybe if I had a real one in its country of origin it'd be delicious, buttery, fresh and hugely satisfying, instead of a bit greasy, slimy, green tasting and mucousy mucusy muycoussy not very nice at all

I am horribly tempted by the chocolate brownie and chocolate mousse recipes that keep appearing on my pinterest though, just scared it might be a huge waste of all the other ingredients.

Losingmyreligion · 04/04/2015 14:32

They should move this to the diet thread. Enough to put anyone off eating anything (except the salsa recipe that is).

Aridane · 04/04/2015 19:56

So not the point of the thread - but, OP, thanks for the inspiration. I have just microwaved a small hard unripe avocado in the microwave (don't have / like bananas - so can't do the banana ripening trick)!- and it's turned out really well - creamy, lush and tasty.

OublietteBravo · 04/04/2015 20:02

Avocado. Microwaved with cheese until the cheese melts and served with a fresh, warm baguette. Mmmmmm.

Or uncooked on toast, in salad, on its own, etc.

Nospringflower · 04/04/2015 20:03

YANBU - I am still scarred from the avocado soup DM cooked up a number of years ago - burnt rubber flavour with staying power anyone? Envy

Revenant · 04/04/2015 20:21

I fried avocado in cornmeal a few months ago ( blame the Guardian mexican special supplement, apparently it was going to be the next big food trend). Never again. It was horrible.

OublietteBravo · 04/04/2015 20:23

Ewwwww - avocado soup sounds vile.

Pastaagain78 · 06/04/2015 19:03

I didn't even know an avocado could be baked! I like avocados, but that sounds horrible.

operaha · 06/04/2015 19:12

my other half did the egg/avocado how the feck do you spell that, keep changing the a/o thing the other day for breakfast, with really crispy bacon, it was bloody lovely.

mmmm bloody mary, our fave cocktail too Grin Grin

BrianButterfield · 06/04/2015 19:14

I love ripe avocados but seriously, about one in ten that I buy are ripe, and sometimes they never get there. I've tried all the tricks. Is there a foolproof way of checking if one is ripe before you buy it?

Haggisfish · 06/04/2015 20:25

Yes I squeeze them gently-there should be a slight give to them. I find farm shop and aldi ones the best, tesco the worst.

Skinheadmermaid · 06/04/2015 20:27

I tried that avocado with egg thing once after seeing it on Pintrest.
It was absolutely disgusting. I couldn't eat it.

ClaireFraser · 06/04/2015 20:28

Flicking the little stem out makes. Them ripen faster. They also ripen faster in a fruit bowl with a banana.

I usually buy 7 at a time, 2 in fruit bowl, the rest in the fridge, and then replenish fruit bowl from the fridge every few days.

JustWantToBeDorisAgain · 06/04/2015 20:43

I make chocolate mud pie for my dairy free soya free dd's with avocados and it's fab!

BabyGanoush · 06/04/2015 20:50

yes, put them in with a banana.

They should have some give when you buy.

The only way they are acceptable warm, is if sliced up in a "sincronizada" (mexican toastie), use 1 tortilla/wrap, put loads of mozzarella, ham, tomato, onion and avocado slices on, put another tortilla/wrap on top, put in frying pan (no fat) flip hallway through (careful!) for wonderful Mexican toastie. Eat with spicy chilli sauce.
