It seems to be a running trend that racist jokes in my office are ok. I've heard conversations saying it's ok because it's a joke and that anyone offended is too stupid to realise that it actually funny Hmm

My problem is how to handle it. Some of these "jokes" are coming from the owner (very small company) and there is nobody to actually complain to.

Odd that these "jokes" never happened when we had people of different races in the company but now we don't it's happening on a daily basis.

Aside from telling them that they are racist and the idiots I don't know what else I can do.

It's a very brave act to say something as mild as 'I don't think that "joke" is funny' or the even more provocative: 'please explain why you find that "joke" funny', especially in a small firm.

You are making a judgment - I agree it is the right one - but people don't like being judged and they will probably turn on you with ostracism and ridicule and make your working life unbearable. You might find yourself selected for redundancy.

I'm not saying that's a reason for not making a stand. I just think it should be acknowledged.

A colleague of mine made a fantastic short speech to our vile boss that I still remember. But that was the day he handed in his notice for another job. He did forego his notice period and money, but seeing as the job was much better-paid and started immediately it probably suited him.

I bet he practised that speech in front of the bathroom mirror for hours Grin

This suggestion might not be appropriate in your position as it sounds like you don't want to rock the boat (no judgment there), but a good strategy to have up your sleeve for when you want to challenge something at work but don't know how is to say that you will log it or make a record of incidents. You don't have to do anything beyond that. As soon as people think that you are writing things down/ keeping a record, they pipe down as they don't know what you'll do next.
