AIBU to get the train set?

Ds is desperate for the Lego train set, he's been wanting it for the past 4/5 years. At £100+ I've always said no.

But, I've found it on amazon for £69. It's his birthday in April, and we budget £60 for presents. Ds has AS and has always been really into trains.

However dp doesn't want me to, because its feeding his obsession, and the possibility he'll no longer want it once he has it. Plus the factor it'll be on his bedroom floor, small bedroom that he shares.

Aibu to just get him that and not much else? Ds does understand how much it is, he spent the other day on meltdown because he only has £15 and it'll take forever to save up enough, so he should understand that part- he'll be 11.

We bought our dd that for Xmas. Best money spent. Wish we could get lego that cheap. In Australia lego is so overpriced.

So glad you ordered it, please come back on the big day and let us know how he enjoyed it!

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 01/04/2015 21:07

I fed my son's Aaperger's obsession (birds of prey) and now he is a full time falconer.

I am glad you have ordered it for your lad, I hope he has a wonderful birthday.

Get it. My DH and all of us still play with the train set. Tremendous for planning, structuring, imagining, timetabling. It will make him happy

RandomMess · 01/04/2015 21:22

So glad you're getting it for him, it certainly won't lose value! Not that I can see him ever getting fed up of it Smile

ProudAS · 02/04/2015 07:33

Adult Aspie here.

Glad you're getting it for him. I don't think it will be something he loses interest in quickly.

inflagrantedelicto · 04/04/2015 10:04

Found these in my kitchen- I think he'll be happy Smile.

Might see if I can get one or two of the coins (another recent obsession since he discovered they have different pictures, he's a mercenary road at the best of times! ) He also has the pocket microscope and lives looking at the detail on notes.

It's arrived[:)]

He's still telling all and sundry that he really wants one but it's too expensive. I grin to myself, and thank my lucky starts that circumstances have made it possible. He and dp put a thin shelf up along the side of his bed the other day, he was telling me his plans to make a ramp and run cards/trains along it [:D]

Really pleased for you. Its back up to 79.99 so you did well to buy it when you did!

BucketFullOfDinosaurs · 07/04/2015 12:05

Aw, great! I'd love to hear how he reacts when he opens it!

inflagrantedelicto · 20/04/2015 15:01

It's his birthday! Can't wait to see his face, he thinks I've got him a truck set he's also wanting. Besides the train set he also has some random bits from the January sales, and some 50p coins for his collection.
Last week we went on a Shaun hunt in London, which included a trip to Hamleys, he thought this was the closest he'd ever get to one Wink Grin

I haven't read the thread cos I have to go now, but my dad tells exactly this story. He's 70 now and it still upsets him.

He badly wanted a train set as a child, but his parents couldn't afford it. He was disappointed every Christmas and Birthday for years until finally his parents saved enough money. Only by that time he was too old for it and it never really got used. He is still hurt, on his parent's behalf, about the sacrifice they made to buy the set that is still pristine in his loft.

The relative cost of these things isn't what it was in those days and maybe your sacrifice isn't so great, but are you really sure he still wants it?

inflagrantedelicto · 20/04/2015 16:19

No! Don't say that! I'm pretty confident, he still does. He's only turning 11, and loves playing with his tomica trains outside, and loved the underground/mainline ones on our jolly.

He baked his birthday cake yesterday (at his request- I'm not a mega mean mummy!) and is elbow deep in icing sugar and ready to roll making a model virgin train to go on top. Bless him.

I tried to attach these earlier, but my phone isn't co-operating. The pic is from last Monday's inset day, he made me take it - "So I knew what it looked like". I took it thinking- I certainly do- there's one in my attic! He wasn't amused at the 25% mark up in Hamleys!

Aww he looks like Indiana Jones in the toyshop, finding the ultimate treasure! I'm glad you got it for him, and I bet he won't grow out of it (I just found out my mum tried to give my childhood train set to my great niece, and I sulked until she changed her mind and agreed I could repair it for me my dc, and buy another for my niece. I am 34.)

InFlagranteDelicto · 20/04/2015 17:22

It is not often he is speechless.

He has rapidly moved to the carpet, and is systematically working out the order in which to build it all. I think we've lost him for a couple of hours
