well.... everyone earning less than about 50k. ...or if you weren't born into money... if you identify as working class, if you live in social housing, if you don't own your home, if you are on any or have ever been on benefits...if any of those apply then you need to read this to see how much we are all getting screwed by those at the top.....It made me so angry ......i knew things were shit and getting shitter but my god it has opened my eyes even more....I couldn't put it down over the weekend and was sat ignoring everyone while reading it with my face like this --> Shock and Angry

it has also made me want to become properly politically active because the only way things will change is if "people like us" stand up and shout LOUD

I will NEVER use the word chav again

Sounds like I need to read this, thanks OP.

btw the PP objecting to the title - I think you are missing the point.

OddBoots · 30/03/2015 17:18

I've read it, it is good in parts. I used to like it until he got so twisted up in himself he went a bit misogynistic.

ilovechristmas1 · 30/03/2015 17:21

havent read it but may now

i prefer underclass to chav

im on benefits but own my own house, what does that make me Grin

HermioneWeasley · 30/03/2015 17:23

I am put off by his recent hideous misogyny and lesbian hating TBH

GaryShitpeas · 30/03/2015 17:49

there are the problems starkly there in front of us but not the solutions, which can be a bit irritating

yes I agree, that would be my only criticism of it as well

Not reading anything with that name. Horrible word

Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooosh

That's the point going over your head...

BabyGanoush · 30/03/2015 17:58

There are books I don't allow myself to read, as it would make my blood pressure explode.

"Chavs", and also "wifework"

I am too scared

TinklyLittleLaugh · 30/03/2015 17:59

Could someone summarise the lesbian hating and misogyny for me please, or at least tell me what to google.

I quite like Owen Jones. He is quite old school I think. There's not many people like him around now.

GaryShitpeas · 30/03/2015 18:05

oh I daren't read wifework either babyg ....i have heard what its about

I've read it. Owen Jones gets a fair bit of media attention but I would like to see him have his own documentary or film made. He could be a Michael Moore/Morgan Spurlock type and reach a wider audience.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 30/03/2015 18:41

Certain trans women have coined a phrase 'the cotton ceiling' to describe the difficulty that they have in getting lesbians to see them as viable sexual partners. Many of these trans women have penises which they claim to be female organs, thereby making lesbians trans phobic for refusing to consider them as sexual partners.
Owen jones was supporting this cotton ceiling notion on twitter, and he was asked whether he would perform cunnilingus on the vagina of a trans man and he responded with utter disgust. Hypocrisy and double standards abounded.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 30/03/2015 19:06

I has just taken me about five minutes to work that out Ehric notwithstanding your excellent explanation. I agree, that is very hypocritical.

Just found a piece by Owen Jones decrying Alan Carr for his campness, then decrying himself for decrying Allan Carr for his campness. Confused. He seems to be tying himself in knots trying to be PC. Maybe not as bright as I thought he was.

kippersmum · 30/03/2015 19:07

It is a very important book that should be read by lots of people, regardless of what they earn.

However if I am totally honest, as important as his points are, I found it slightly repetitive at times.

Does anyone remember a book called Danzigers Britain by Nicholas Danziger about the "underclass" as he called it. It was written about 15 years ago & is an amazing book. Mr Danziger is a photographer & the book has some haunting photos in it.

99pokerface · 30/03/2015 19:13

No thanks hes a champaign socialist like james o brian type who thinks he knows about povery talks about the Tory elite as if he come from some council estate from Brixton when the reailty is he lives in the leafy part of london and shops in waitrose

stillwearingaredribbon · 30/03/2015 19:14

It blows my mind that a group of people can decide that a penis is a female organ and accuse lesbians of discrimination for not agreeing
World gone mad

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/03/2015 19:44

I've read it, it was ok.

I think describing him as the next Orwell might be overstating things somewhat though.

Agree with stillwearing re a penis being a female organ. It isn't.

Binkybix · 30/03/2015 19:51

So when they asked him about cunnilingus on a trans women, did that mean someone with a vagina or a penis they claimed to be a female organ? Sorry if being dim.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 30/03/2015 19:55

Actually the older I get, the more I think Orwell was an utter bloody genius.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 30/03/2015 20:19

Yeah
There is a movement within trans activism which denies the fact of sexual dimorphism and claims that assigning body parts to a sex is "essentialist" and transphobic/cissexist.
Trans people, instead of saying they are a woman with a male sex organ are now stating that they are a woman with a female penis. Therefore lesbian women should accept them as sexual partners because their penis is female, because they assert that they are female.
This also leads to comments like "the term female genital mutilation is cis sexist" because it assigns labia, vulvae and clitori as female sex organs when trans orthodoxy states that they are neither female nor male.
To be fair, it's not all trans women but a sizeable minority.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 30/03/2015 20:21

Bilnky they were saying 'if lesbians are transphobic for refusing to have sex with a 'female penis' does that mean you would perform cunnilingus on a trans man who still has a vagina?' Owen jones, being a gay man, found this thought disgusting. Yet lesbian women are transphobic for finding the thought of sexual contact with a penis unacceptable.

nobodysbabynow · 30/03/2015 20:32

Kippersmum, I have Danziger's Britain and also a photo collection of his called The British - he's a great photographer and writer.

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/03/2015 20:35

That is quite a bonkers line of thought particularly regarding taking FGM and making it all about an issue to which it is unrelated. That is quite offensive.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 30/03/2015 20:38

Yeah, it really is. But questioning it gets you called transphobic in some circles, including Owen Jones' one.

SylvaniansAtEase · 30/03/2015 20:39

  • surely the only reply to all that - which answers the issue on a number of levels - is 'Do I look like a complete twat?'
Binkybix · 30/03/2015 20:44

Oh I see. Thanks Ehric What an utter hypocrite in that case and how annoying that a man seeks to dictate how females label their own genetalia.
