Full body costumed adults hugging children.

If a adult stranger 'bear hugged' a child (eg five yr old) I'm guessing most would find it inappropriate; why then is it ok if the adult is wearing a full costume. You know the type of thing: footy mascot, teddy bear/ dog or even a walking hedge like we just came accross at our local garden centre on opening weekend.

I thought it was about the people with the 'Plushy' fetish. Blush

gaggiagirl · 29/03/2015 19:24

I was a giant (well known) bear. The costume cost thousands. The suit wearers had to be a specific height and shoe size for each suit. I digress...all I was thinking of was getting the head off so I could breathe!. Warm weather and 8 toddlers hanging off you gives no thrills whatsoever.

ProudAS · 29/03/2015 20:36

I've been in costume and had kids want to hug me and pose for photos with me (often encouraged by parents). It would be abuse to push the children away IMO.

Just what is going to happen in public place with parent a few feet away????

tobytoes · 29/03/2015 20:42

This has got to be a joke.

YouPooPooBumBum · 29/03/2015 20:58

The kids at my primary school kicked the fuck out of Mr Wimpy when he came to the school fair.
I remember him lying on the floor with his giant foam nose squashed in saying "help me help me"
This was years ago when it was acceptable to have advertising for junk foods in schools and I went to a naice school so he didn't have any one to help him.

springlamb · 29/03/2015 21:00

My dc always hated thm.
DS kicked Shamu in the bollocks when the furry decker crept up on him.

Really????????? You are really asking this!?

RedToothBrush · 29/03/2015 22:00

People in huge teddy bear type costumes are obviously feeling up your child with their boxing glove type hands. In full public view.

FFS.

CalmingMiranda · 29/03/2015 22:10

So, Op, was your DC molested by a PedoPrivet at the garden centre on the opening weekend?

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 29/03/2015 22:13

Amazing thread Grin at pedobear

Dd was never fooled by them. We saw Peter Rabbit. I was pretending to be excited "look dd a rabbit"

She just looked at me with a puzzled expression and said "but mummy it's a man in a suit." She was 2 1/2 years old Confused

TarpalCunnel · 29/03/2015 22:20

I used to be a mascot for a children's festival.

I can tell you now that it is smelly & sweaty work, prancing about in a teddy bear costume all afternoon. The bear head was also fucking heavy, it felt like if I moved my head forward Id break my neck. The bear shoes also stank, honestly they needed a stake driven through them.

Do a google search for stories from Disney employees who had to dress up as various characters - the poor sods were the ones at risk not the kids! I've read stories of Princesses being touched up and Mickey Mouse being punched on some blogs!
The person who dressed up as Peppa Pig at our local soft play centre deserved a medal (I actually paid for a drink at the counter for them) due to being shadowed by DD2 for ages. She was absolutely in love and kept trying to kiss Peppa's dress Blush she was distraught when I managed to drag her away!

SistersOfPercy · 29/03/2015 23:19

I'm a stormtrooper of a weekend (not something you get to say every day). The garrison I'm part of is a world wide costuming group who raise millions every year for children's charities by dressing up.
Parents are happy to throw some change in a bucket so the kids can see their heroes.
Not that it makes any odds but I am crb checked (or whatever they call it these days) anyway.

Lilmissconcerned · 30/03/2015 22:27

Ever seen you tubes ideas of disney characters being physically abusedby kids?? Think sometimes as rhinestone suggests the dangers in being the mascot ... Xxx

StickyProblem · 30/03/2015 22:38

When my Dd was about 3 we went to a science park and she flung her arms round a 4 foot plastic model of Jupiter. It's still her favourite planet.

BastardGoDarkly · 30/03/2015 22:46
