Full body costumed adults hugging children.

If a adult stranger 'bear hugged' a child (eg five yr old) I'm guessing most would find it inappropriate; why then is it ok if the adult is wearing a full costume. You know the type of thing: footy mascot, teddy bear/ dog or even a walking hedge like we just came accross at our local garden centre on opening weekend.

It is those in costumes who are at risk from kids. I have been an escort for one of these characters, simply to try and stop some kids kicking or punching the character.

PowderMum · 29/03/2015 17:39

OP I'm struggling to see your point here. Those people in the costumes are paid to wear them and hug children (they are DRB or whatever checked usually) - it's the job description and all part of the experience for the DC.

For some reason mine always knew that they were 'pretend' from the beginning, but that didn't ever stop their enjoyment or wanting to queue up for pictures. My DN on the other hand was completely freaked out by them and would only ever look from a distance.

Clowns are just scary!!

26Point2Miles · 29/03/2015 17:51

I bet op means characters you can't see not the 'safer' ones like Cinderella/Anna/elsa.... Just the 'dodgy' ones who might be male underneath Hmm

WorraLiberty · 29/03/2015 17:53

Who sits and thinks about things like this?

ghostyslovesheep · 29/03/2015 17:53

YABU and massively paranoid

WowserBowser · 29/03/2015 18:06

For fuck sake

AuntieStella · 29/03/2015 18:15

" ... even a walking hedge like we just came accross at our local garden centre on opening weekend."

Pictures?

MrsTedCrilly · 29/03/2015 18:17

It's pedogeddon in this country! Total over reaction, what a sad world that would be. I already feel sorry for the males I know feeling self conscious around other peoples kids.. If my lad went up to someone and gave them a hug it would make me smile.

Enormouse · 29/03/2015 18:17

I've been dressed as a giant mouse before (oh hey - enormouse Grin) . It was hellish, I was mobbed by children. Felt sorry for my mate who was in the dog suit. He was even more popular.

I was too busy thinking about ice cold coke, ice cream and when the fuck can I take off this giant mouse head off and go to the pub to think about using the mouse suit as a predatory cover.

Enormouse · 29/03/2015 18:35

Seriously……mascots and our kids….
…who's keeping an eye on that?

TheNewSchmoo · 29/03/2015 18:38

I just actually laughed out loud at "using the mouse suit as a predatory cover"

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 29/03/2015 18:40

Ds has always known they are not 'real' but is happy to cuddle on that basis. Dd thinks they are real and is absolutely terrified of one approaches!!

In my experience it is very much child led - if they don't want a cuddle it isn't pushed.

Ban the mascots and steal a bit of childhood magic!

fattymcfatfat · 29/03/2015 18:45

y DCs think they are brilliant. DS knows and always has done that they aren't real but finds it hilarious that a grown up basically plays dress up. DD is onoy 15 months so god knows what runs through her head but she laughs and points and claps at them. telling them hiya over and over Grin

GraysAnalogy · 29/03/2015 18:49

MN's on sundays drive me to wine.

KatieKaye · 29/03/2015 18:50

Please don't imagine the person wearing the costume is always crp checked or that they don't get some kick out of it.

I knew a very peculiar person who ran his own business (rip-off build a bear stuff), had no checks and got a strange thrill out of wearing costumes. He had two different ones and in a prior job would take the shop's costume home whenever he could.

Anyone can order one of these costumes over the internet as long as they've got enough money to pay for it.

NobodyLivesHere · 29/03/2015 18:55

Pedobear Grin

enderwoman · 29/03/2015 18:59

If you have been playing Five Nights At Freddy's then YANBU.

CalmingMiranda · 29/03/2015 19:05

Walking hedge Grin
Pedobear Grin
Mr Blobby Debacle Grin

Marvellous.

Alisvolatpropiis · 29/03/2015 19:05

Mumsnet on sundays make me glad I can't drink wine at the moment, I'd probably get banned, Grays, Grin

CalmingMiranda · 29/03/2015 19:07

I clicked on this thread because I thought 'full body costumes' referred to those knitted suits that fully clothe the wearer but depict a naked body.
Which would be an interesting dilemma, IMO.

ItsAllKickingOffPru · 29/03/2015 19:09

I thought of Luge Suits, Miranda.

Enormouse · 29/03/2015 19:09

Miranda I thought it would either be about those morph suits or body stockings.

Hoppinggreen · 29/03/2015 19:13

As someone who had to dress up as Mr Blobby once ( don't ask) you don't usually get much choice as you usually have a child attached to each leg while several more hug you.
