to think I should be able to eat pizza

letmeeatpizza · 26/03/2015 21:43

Nc. Basically my gp has got very stingy with prescriptions, for years I've been getting pizza bases and crackers for my celiac. But now apparently I can only be given pasta, bread and flour mixes. I know the NHS in Wales has some funding problems but I can't eat normal foods and they are more expensive and I could die if I doNt stick to the diet. I'd be perfectly happy to pay a nominal price of a pound or so a packet so they end up no more expensive than normal stuff but the system isn't in place. So I'm at the mercy of profit driven supermarkets who charge loads because they can.

OP posts:

Grays I hear ya. I'm going to collect my new ones this afternoon for £270 which will put me into overdraft but my prescription has changed. I just think "one of those things" and will tighten my belt next month.

GraysAnalogy · 27/03/2015 12:27

Ouch it's a sting isn't it. P'raps we should have made a thread Wink

PrimalLass · 27/03/2015 12:38

While we are on the subject, the DS seeded sliced loaf is just lovely. No 'sandy-ness' at all. Just utterly lovely.

CallMeExhausted · 27/03/2015 12:51

I can relate to the price of eyeglasses. Not me, mind you, but my DD who has been wearing glasses since she was 4 months old, as well as my DH. DD is legally blind, her bifocal lenses ALONE are in excess of £500 a pair, DH cannot work or drive or function without his specs. They both need highly customised lenses, thinned etc, and we don't get any coverage. The cost can be crippling.

My DD is also fed via gastrostomy, but can take some of her food by mouth. Because she has some oral ability (even though it is not enough to sustain her, and at 9, with supplemental gastrostomy feeds she is the size of a small 6yo) we have to pay for her pre-digested elemental prescription milk.

Sure, pizza is a necessity. Without a doubt.

As for the OP - the title of this thread is AIBU to think I should be able to eat pizza?

OP, you are perfectly ABLE to eat pizza - what you should have asked is AIBU to think I should be able to receive pizza free on the government teat as I can't be arsed to put forth the effort to make a pizza base with the ingredients that I DO get free. I am such a special flower

And if you haven't figured it yet, YABVVVVVVVVU

WyldChyld · 27/03/2015 12:54

The NHS gives me my lovely morphine on prescription which means that I can function. But goddammit, they're so frigging mean and won't prescribe me daily wine which would really improve my mood AND is very good at numbing pain.

maggiethemagpie · 28/03/2015 12:25

I have a medical condition which means I have a far more restricted diet than you, and I have to pay a lot more than most people just to eat and keep myself healthy. I don't expect anyone else to subsidise me - it's called hard luck. Why should you be subsidised?

I knew you could get GF food on the nhs but I had no idea people felt so entitled as the OP. I always assumed people saw it as a luxury rather than a right, especially since the expansion of the ranges available in supermarkets. True, some items are more expensive but then you can quite easily cope without the majority of them. OP is still very lucky she gets what she does on prescription.

madreloco · 28/03/2015 12:53

My 8 year old can make their own GF bread. And we've never been able to get GF products free from anywhere.
I have only ever come across this culture of extreme entitlement in the UK, where people get a lot for nothing and have their hands out for more.

Bue · 28/03/2015 12:59

No wonder the NHS is on its knees if the budget is going towards GF pizza bases!! I'm actually shocked at this.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 28/03/2015 13:09

Pizza on prescription?
Really?
Ffs!

glasgowlass · 28/03/2015 13:17

I have coeliac disease. Im entitled to food on prescription. Do I request it? No. Mainly because the sample packs given to me after diagnosis over 10 years ago were truly foul. Bread that would damage a stone wall if you threw it at it & had the consistency of cardboard.
I survive without eating bread & pizza on a daily basis. If I do fancy it then it's easy to make some. I make a lot & freeze in batches. Im busy too but I MAKE the time to do this Its not rocket science I'd rather spend time making my own than eating a shitty prescription excuse for food.
Is not just big supermarkets that all GF food. My local Lidl has GF pasta/ cereal/biscuits etc at a very reasonable price.
If I buy a genius loaf, I freeze it in Sandwich bags of 2 slices. Easy to defrost & means I dont waste £3.50 as I don't often eat bread. I have a full & varied diet. I've made myself a new 'normal' when it comes to food.
OP you will not die if you eat 'normal' bread etc. It would be silly & you might feel like you want to die but it won't kill you. You're being a bit of a drama llama. The NHS don't actually have to make GF food available on prescription at all so honestly be grateful for what you get.
To the pp who said that in England you don't get free prescriptions but you pay for everyone elses...actually you don't. Here in Scotland we have a separate NHS budget. Our free prescriptions come from that. England does not subsidise free prescriptions here.

fascicle · 28/03/2015 13:24

I think it's right the NHS should cut down on g/f prescriptions. The NHS is struggling, financially, and the availability of g/f options in shops has increased considerably over the last few years. I'm not coeliac, but I avoid wheat because it has effects on me that I would rather avoid. I buy some g/f items (mainly flour and bread items).

I make a lot of pizza (both wheat based and g/f). You can use all sorts of bases - I've used lightly toasted bread, pizza bases and wraps.

Enormouse · 28/03/2015 13:37

I do have sympathy with the op, it's awful living with a food allergy/intolerance. I have an egg and nut allergy myself. But the nhs do have to draw a line somewhere.

Getting my epi pen on prescription - yes
Getting egg replacer, egg free cakes/mayo/etc - no

I could die without my epi pen, I'm not going to die without cake. If I need food items I buy or make my own. I was a really shit baker to begin with but I do make a nice vegan chocolate brownie and carrot and cheddar scones now. And pizza bases are pretty simple to make.

Now I'm thinking of Eddie Izzards cake or death sketch.

Enormouse · 28/03/2015 14:04

allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/26357/gluten-free-pizza-base.aspx this recipe seems pretty simple to me. Not too labour intensive either.

AuntieDee · 28/03/2015 14:33

Ffs you can get food on prescription??? Am I hearing that correctly? What's wrong with buying it like the rest of us have to do?

derxa · 28/03/2015 14:46

Beyond parody

Justusemyname · 28/03/2015 14:49

Yabu I say making dough trashes the kitchen and takes ages. It doesn't. Yabu to also say it tastes rubbish. You need to learn to be a better cook.

Dogs4life · 28/03/2015 14:56

Pizza Hut def do gluten free. Dominoes might too. If it costs more it's not by much

fatlazymummy · 28/03/2015 14:59

How do people manage to be grown up, do things like commute, hold down a job, use a computer, look after children, etc etc, yet not be able to do something as simple as make a pizza base? The mind boggles.
Anyway, OP, there appears to be hundreds of recipes for gluten free pizza bases and different varieties if you google. Why pay for expensive supermarket versions when you can make your own, and know exactly what you are eating?

fatlazymummy · 28/03/2015 15:00

Should have said 'varieties of bread'.(gluten free).

Justusemyname · 28/03/2015 15:04

People who have asthma can die from an attack. Asthma is the only life threatening disease where the patient has to pay for their own medication is that fair? Inhalers are vital. Pizza is not.

Sirzy · 28/03/2015 15:07

Unfortunatly there are lots of other life threatening diseases which people have to pay for medicines.

ihatelego · 28/03/2015 15:08

do people with gluten intolerance survive on pizza? Confused surely you could just cook other gf recipes, batch cook etc for convenience and then buy gf free pizza from a supermarket as an occasional treat, £3 isn't bad for a pizza

PHANTOMnamechanger · 28/03/2015 15:12

OMG YABVVU OP, as the mother of a coeliac DD may I say its people like you who give bad press to the majority of coeliacs.

DD has been diagnosed sice she was 5 so 10 years now. We have had NOTHING on prescription since our PCT started cutting back on what was available when she was about 9 - only a few brands of bread pasta and flour/mix, nothing else.

So we rely on buying or making everything ourselves - GF pizza bases are not that expensive to buy, and the flour and yogurt dough recipe takes minutes and one bowl, so hardly messy and difficult.

By the way for those who do not know of this online GF bakery then wheatfreebakerydirect.com is superb. Every now and then they do free delivery on orders over £35 and we stock the freezer, they do huge baguettes all sorts of loaves, rolls , cakes and donuts as well as pastry and mixes. The smell when you open the box and it smells like real bread, very good prices too on a par with "normal" food. Best GF bread we have had.
