to think I should be able to eat pizza

Nc. Basically my gp has got very stingy with prescriptions, for years I've been getting pizza bases and crackers for my celiac. But now apparently I can only be given pasta, bread and flour mixes. I know the NHS in Wales has some funding problems but I can't eat normal foods and they are more expensive and I could die if I doNt stick to the diet. I'd be perfectly happy to pay a nominal price of a pound or so a packet so they end up no more expensive than normal stuff but the system isn't in place. So I'm at the mercy of profit driven supermarkets who charge loads because they can.

I can't imagine how horrible a 25P pizza base must tatse? If this is what you like to eat then you are beyond my help!

itsmeitscathy · 27/03/2015 08:01

The OP doesn't deserve the flaming she has received.

Baking without gluten is not as easy- gluten is the thing that holds everything together and is quite important to good bread etc.

I understand your frustrations, I have life-threatening allergies in my family to things found in everyday foods. Pizza is off unless we make it with processed cheese. So we do. So YABU but I say that gently!

Mrsjayy · 27/03/2015 08:06

My ceoliac friend has never got pizza bases are they really a prescription item really . She gets bread or rolls and pasta

Caboodle · 27/03/2015 08:09

Bread making is not that difficult - with or without gluten (and I am no cook) But OP, lots of people have told you that YABU, and they have given a variety of reasons. For the first 2 years of his life DC1 and suncream didn't react well - did I get it off the NHS? Course not....just spent more on the one he was ok with. Didn't have a problem with it either.

Bumply · 27/03/2015 08:17

I hate these threads as they make me feel guilty for getting GF products on prescription for DS2.

I would prefer it if the prescription provision was on a 'pay the equivalent price to non-GF' basis. Which was what the OP said.

And people referring to 'kneading GF dough' have obviously never baked with GF flour. Stir it with a spoon more like.

BrieAndChilli · 27/03/2015 08:20

I have trouble absorbing iron even from tablets. Should I not get steak on prescription?

Is this a joke? I don't think coeliac patients should get free stuff at all. And we are a gf household, with a probably-coealic child.

SwirlyThingAlert · 27/03/2015 08:23

OP doesn't deserve to have pizza unless she can make the dough?! Do YOU do that? Oh I doubt it, bc that is professional chef level cooking.

Whaaaa?! ]grin] Since when is making pizza bases professional level cooking?! Confused Grin
That's a firm favourite activity enjoyed by small children everywhere - pizza dough making!

PrimalLass · 27/03/2015 08:24

OP is quite reasonably asking that she, like most of the population, be able to grab convenient food at a reasonable price.

A frozen GF pizza in Tesco costs about the same as a normal one.

londonrach · 27/03/2015 08:27

Im shocked nhs valuable funds food apart from stays in hospital, and build me up shakes and specialist food for those requiring peg feeding etc. My sis sil is gluten free and makes or buys what she needs. She never got it free. As for making bread being professional im shocked as its very easy and ive visited patients (sterotyping here) in council houses right up to mansions who have freshly baked bread smell (im sure just to make me hungry) when i entered the house or flat. I know children learn at the brownies and scout organisation and i certainly learnt at my primary school and secondary school. Make look online for some recipe as you might be surprised how easy and cheap it is. As for the 25p plastic tasting pizza base, you really wouldnt want to eat that anyway.

Mrsjayy · 27/03/2015 08:32

Is your sil gluten free or does she have ceoliac disease?

Mrs j good point its ceoliac disease but i know she cant have gluten. See how much i know about this.

ToBeeOrNot · 27/03/2015 08:42

I knead my gluten free dough. It doesn't rise as much as a regular dough but that's not really an issue for pizza bases.

Mrsjayy · 27/03/2015 08:46

I think the prescription food has extra vitamin added because I think a personwith ceoliac ccan't absorb vvitamins very wwell especially calcuim having a disease Is very much different from being a bit bloated and windy from normal bread not everybody has the skill or time or inclination to bake bread

FenellaFellorick · 27/03/2015 08:49

You can get a gluten free pizza from tesco for £2.20

atm my children still have pizza bases on their prescription but if the dr vetoed it then fair enough. Pizza is nice but it's not essential and £2.20 is not a high price compared to other pizzas.

Goodfellas are £2.50, Tesco's own £1.50, pizza express £4.50

MissyMistress402 · 27/03/2015 09:13

Why can't you just buy it instead of getting it on prescription? My local Asda has lots of GF stuff.

formerbabe · 27/03/2015 09:18

I don't think gf food should be available on prescription....there is plenty of other food you can eat. What a waste of of NHS money. I wouldn't have the nerve to rock up at my doctors surgery to request that...shameful.

Only1scoop · 27/03/2015 09:22

When you think you've seen it all.

Blimey I didn't realise the nhs did prescription pizzas.... Hopefully if it's stopping the budget for potentially life saving drugs can be upped.

MamaLazarou · 27/03/2015 09:29

Pizza bases on prescription? You have GOT to be shitting me.

I can't eat dairy but it's never occured to me to expect the government to fund my soya milk supply.

YABVVVVVU (if this is even true).

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 27/03/2015 09:34

I've trained taught my 5 & 7 year old to make their own pizza dough as a 'treat' on Friday night.

It couldn't be quicker or easier. If you want pizza that badly, there's your answer. Freezing a few is an excellent idea.

OP, YABU and seem to reject any ideas here to help. This thread belongs in the IKIR (I Know I'm Right) forum, which really should exist.

And yes Butterfly, we make our own pizza all the time, never buy it. Mainly because it's so bloody easy. And God some of you are fucking idiots is outrageously rude. Try to be more civilised.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 27/03/2015 09:35

I'd like fat free cakes on the NHS because I had my gallbladder out last year and now don't tolerate high fat foods.
I get very stressed about it. surely I am entitled to Cake! or Biscuit Biscuit

DisappointedOne · 27/03/2015 09:37

There's an amazing gluten-free pizza base recipe that's 2 ingredients. My coeliac friend uses it all the time and it's brilliant. I'll dig it out.
