to think I should be able to eat pizza

Nc. Basically my gp has got very stingy with prescriptions, for years I've been getting pizza bases and crackers for my celiac. But now apparently I can only be given pasta, bread and flour mixes. I know the NHS in Wales has some funding problems but I can't eat normal foods and they are more expensive and I could die if I doNt stick to the diet. I'd be perfectly happy to pay a nominal price of a pound or so a packet so they end up no more expensive than normal stuff but the system isn't in place. So I'm at the mercy of profit driven supermarkets who charge loads because they can.

Er, making the pizza dough is professional level, yes.
OP's entire point was that she can no longer get the bases.
Deliberate 'misunderstanding' to be disingenuous is not clever.

IrmaGuard · 27/03/2015 01:31

Water, yeast and sugar in a bowl. Four and salt in another. Mix together, addoil and knead for 10 minutes. Leave to rise for half an hour. Done.

It really isn't difficult, butterfly.

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 27/03/2015 01:33

You're very dramatic aren't you OP?i could die' and 'trash the kitchen' are you for real?
And butterfly what a dirty mouth- do you kiss your children with that?

SeaUnicorns · 27/03/2015 01:37

Er butterfly wings what pizza base are you making that's proffessional level?

Yes I have made pizza bases, at the college I attended which was a specialist college for people with autism.

I'm sure I saw a 12 year old on junior masterchef make a stuff crust pizza base.

I'm affair yes a lot of people do make their own bases!

SeaUnicorns · 27/03/2015 01:40

In fact thinking about it in pretty sure I made GF pizzas bases

ZacharyQuack · 27/03/2015 02:33

Making pizza base is about as difficult as making scones.

TowerRavenSeven · 27/03/2015 02:39

Oh for Christ sakes. Stir up your own base, we're all tired! Sorry, no sympathy and yes you are BU!

NeedABumChange · 27/03/2015 02:43

Not actually sure why you need pizza. Or why you can't just make your own? Supermarkets sell everything you need. Some of the ethnic ones sell stuff much cheaper too.

YABU.

This thread is less confusing now I'm reading 'gluten-free' for GF instead of 'Gina Ford'.

Still though, on which planet is making pizza dough 'Professional chef level cooking'?

I have coeliacs and have never requested my food prescription since my diagnosis. I too love pizza but it's not essential, I often just make 'posh' cheese on toast instead, using tom purée, grated cheese and loads of nice toppings.
My ds has a very severe food allergy and has to carry 2 epipens, this is what the nhs is for in my opinion, not topping up my shopping. Gluten free doesn't have to be expensive, just avoid all the highly processed expensive crap!

blueteapot · 27/03/2015 06:10

These items would have been stopped on advice of the local authority - in an effort to rationalise prescribing, but also because pizza bases, like biscuits and cake are unhealthy and unessential - we are a health service afterall. The flour is there so you can bake what you like

cosmicboy · 27/03/2015 06:11

Butterfly, by far the cheapest gf meal both at home and out and about, is a jacket spud and beans! It's normally the cheapest thing to have in any cafe etc and totally gf Smile

Madamecastafiore · 27/03/2015 06:12

Nhs Managers have to attend panels to judge whether certain cases can be funded. It's often about ongoing cancer treatment funding or geriatric care and you are whinging about pizza!

IMO subsidies for food stuffs should only be given to those in receipt of certain benefits.

letmeeatpizza · 27/03/2015 06:20

Thanks butterfly for understanding.

My worry is first it was no more biscuits, now no more pizza, next it's going to be no more bread! Only in MN world is an essential like bread easy to make. Its a right FAFF and if you work full time with a commute its very difficult.

I'm not asking for them to be free, just subsidised so I'm not massively out of pocket. I wish I could just pickup smart price pizzas for 25p each.

Pizza bases freeze really well.

Make a batch rolled out really thin. Store layered with greased greaseproof paper. Top and cook from frozen.

ToBeeOrNot · 27/03/2015 06:42

Pizza bases from gluten free flour are one of the easier adaptations. I make a batch and then freeze. As you are getting your flour on prescription this will cost you next to nothing to make.

Sirzy · 27/03/2015 06:53

Like I said before I have no problem with the basics being prescribed but pizza does not fall into that category.

As for pizza base being some sort of proffessional level cooking - DS is 5 and can make pizza dough!

Unfortunatly being ill comes with cost. DS has severe asthma so I had to pay for an all singing all dancing Hoover to help reduce the dust mites, I am about to have to pay for laminate flooring to help. Should I get these for free? I have to drive when others would be able to walk - should I get Petrol costs subsidied?

BIWI · 27/03/2015 06:59

I'm sorry that you're suffering. It's a horrible disease.

But it's a fact of life that things that the minority of people eat will be more expensive. It's all to do with supply and demand, and economies of scale.

I'm sorry to break it to you, though, bread - or pizza, or biscuits - aren't an essential food and you can get on very well without it.

With a condition like yours you have to make a new normal.

YANBU to be pissed off about it. YABVU to want the NHS to subsidise you, when there are plenty of lovely, easy foods that you can eat that don't exacerbate your condition.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 27/03/2015 07:37

parallax

I find it hard to read GF as gluten free as well!
GF is goady fucker to me.Grin

(I dare you to not re-read thread with that in mindWink )

flanjabelle · 27/03/2015 07:44

Zing it's Gina Ford to me!

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 27/03/2015 07:48

Ehh am I missinf something here? It is entirely possible to exist without eating bread - I do it, am certain there are many others who do.

Bread and pizza bases are not essential to life.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 27/03/2015 07:51

Making pizza dough is precessional chef level?? Woo I've just found myself a new career! I make a large batch every couple of weeks and freeze what's left over. I didn't realise I was a pro Smile.
Nobody has the right to eat pizza. I understand coeliac is a horrid disease, but there are plenty of other food available. The NHS pot isn't unlimited and the line has to be drawn somewhere. Where do you think the money should be taken from to provide your non essential pizza OP?
