To be deleted for calling someone a muppet?

Seriously?

Would you take offence at being described as a muppet? Would it bother you so much that you'd go to the trouble of reporting it? If you were a MN mod would you delete it?

This isn't really a TAAT before anyone gets their knickers in a twist but, really, on a site where MNetters regularly call other women names I would never use such as

C*nts
Bitches
Wank stains
Old bags/hags

To name but a few, is muppet really a delectable offense? And who in the name of Justine actually reports this stuff...

So why is my contribution to the thread worthy of particular mention?

What is the reference to real muppets and sooty about?

Fairenuff · 26/03/2015 17:10

Surely it was the word 'loons' not muppet that offended someone OP?

squoosh · 26/03/2015 17:11

Someone said 'I am a muppet' and your name is sooty related so it just tied in well to the thread's theme I think. Two well loved children's puppets.

squoosh · 26/03/2015 17:12

Yes Constance fora is the plural of forum. I can't bring myself to use it though, sounds so pompous. Just in my opinion!

hairylittlegoblin · 26/03/2015 17:13

I called someone a muppet in a report message the other day. As in:"MN you might want to look at this as the OP is a complete muppet."

Perhaps it was the same thread!

Boofy27 · 26/03/2015 17:31

I think that you'd have to be a fairly sensitive flower to be outraged at having a post taken down.

The line between disagreement and personal attack, isn't some nebulous, half invisible, impossible cliff edge type thing, it's really easy and obvious.

"That's a muppetish thing to say because..." = acceptable robust debate.

"You're a muppet and smell of cheese." = personal attack with cheese on top.

2rebecca · 26/03/2015 18:00

fora and forums are both acceptable plurals but fora is quicker to type and sounds more correct to me but I work with a lot of latin terminology.

limitedperiodonly · 26/03/2015 18:05

Fora may be correct but it's a bit wanky though.

It's like people who insist on referenda instead of referendums when most of us just want to have a vote.

ErrWhat · 26/03/2015 18:19

I think muppet is very mild but I've seen posters attacked using 'mild' insults in quite a nasty way.

Muppet is usually an friendly and endearing insult though.

I saw a OP being called 'Dim' the other day but it was used in a nasty sneering way. It really depends on content.

limitedperiodonly · 26/03/2015 18:24

I was on the thread and saw what the OP said.

IMO the OP wasn't very nice but she shouldn't have been deleted.

Ubik1 · 26/03/2015 19:26

On the relationships board I've seen someone's DP called a cunt and they also advised the op to tell him to fuck off.

PrettyFeet · 26/03/2015 19:57

Don't worry about it OP. I've been deleted many a time for sticking up for myself and my views. I've never ever "reported" a poster myself as I find it rather pathetic. Apparently I'm a "goady fucker" but that's ok Grin

PrettyFeet · 26/03/2015 20:04

It's always usually the real nasty bastards that cleverly word things and turn them round on here in an "oh so funny" way, arse lick the powers that be that stay on. Go figure Grin

Patsyandeddie · 26/03/2015 20:17

All too precious I'm afraid, could be far worse!

ConstanceMoan · 26/03/2015 20:35

Sooty - squoosh explains it correctly (thanks, squoosh) - I was a big fan of Sooty & Sweep back in the day - and Sue the panda Smile

ilovesooty · 26/03/2015 20:46

Thanks - and to squoosh too. Flowers

iklboo · 26/03/2015 20:51

If you use it as a verb & not a noun you might be OK.

'That is Muppetish behaviour' NOT
'Thou art a muppet'

(Disclaimer - I am not qualified in muppets law).

PrettyFeet · 26/03/2015 21:05

On one now where I should obviously be "hung drawn and quartered" its about kids running after some sheep. This is mumsnet at its best. Do I goad them.... ummmm yeah, I can't help myself sometimes Grin

worksallhours · 26/03/2015 21:18

I don't even understand why "muppet" is even a derogatory term. Muppets are lovely: they sing, they dance with their arms in that side to side way, they spread good messages about friendship and sharing and the alphabet.

How is that bad?

ilovesooty · 26/03/2015 21:21

PrettyFeet is that sort of "ooh come and look at what I'm doing on the other thread" really necessary?

PrettyFeet · 26/03/2015 21:33

pardon Sooty? I was just saying a for instance. Why do you feel it necessary to jump on me?

PrettyFeet · 26/03/2015 21:35

Why do you feel it necessary to say my posting name? Have I singled you out? NO.

sheldonesque · 26/03/2015 21:42

thou art a muppet Grin

Muppet is a term of endearment in this house.

Attention seeking farker? Not so much.

Carry on...

PrettyFeet · 26/03/2015 21:44

Why on earth do people feel the need to pin point their view off of the back of something someone else has said and HIGHLIGHT their site name? Have your view by all means, I have mine. I never ever highlight another person to put them down before I say what is on my mind. That to me is rude. Don't you get that?

TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 26/03/2015 21:53

@ConstanceMoan

? And who in the name of Justine actually reports this stuff...

Well to be fair, we do, ask people to report anything that you think we should take a look at.
FYI we love reports, we love reading 'em, we look at every single one.
Thanks awfully.
