Is your relie by any chance descended from Richard III?

OrlandoWoolf · 24/03/2015 22:45

The thing about the Royal Family tree is they never seem to go sideways and talk about the other children.

If you go back that far - and look at the other children, they had families who had families.

Our Queen was just lucky because her great great etc grandad was first born. She could easily have been a commoner just like other people.

MintChocAddict · 24/03/2015 22:48

DH and I were watching the news and pictures of the flower throwing flashed up. The reporter then mentioned that long queues were starting to build.

We did these faces Hmm and Confused, however each to their own and all that. Grin

CunningCat · 24/03/2015 22:48

In my house Richard III means something very different! Think rhyming slangGrin

MidniteScribbler · 24/03/2015 22:50

I find it far less weird that people are interested in history than people sobbing over Princess Di, or camping outside a hospital to wait for a royal baby to be born.

OrlandoWoolf · 24/03/2015 22:50

I'm a bit worried what Phillipa Langley will do at the funeral. Will she do a eulogy?

Bowerby · 24/03/2015 22:51

You don't see what's immensely interesting and patriotic about standing to see an ancient King of England being interred? Ok..... Hmm

ssd · 24/03/2015 22:51

the Royal family dont go sideways because a lot of them were either mad or friends with the Nazi's...or German Shock,

you'd keep quiet if you depended on having the adulation of the British people, whilst have so many skeletons in the cupboard you cant count them all

Some people find the whole adoration of the Monarchy weird. So throwing flowers on the coffin of a King who died 500 years ago is a whole new ball game.

Blasphemy!! The white rose signifies the House of York not the usurper Tudor! Henry Tudor was a Lancastrian who married Richard's niece, Elizabeth of York, and combined the red and white roses into the Tudor emblem which is red on the outside and white in the middle.

funnyossity · 24/03/2015 22:55

It's been a fascinating discovery and I'd go if I was nearer.

I think people who stand out in freezing weather for over 90 minutes to watch their team get hammered at football, week in week out, year after year are deranged! (I have a few in my family.)

ssd · 24/03/2015 22:56

Doc, tell me you're a history teacher and not a nutter

OP posts:
OrlandoWoolf · 24/03/2015 22:56

I bet if you went back to say 1700 and then did the family tree from then - taking into account everyone involved - so all the children, their children etc - it would spread out quite a lot.

1 person - 2 children - each of them have 2 children etc etc

10 generations.

2 to the power of 10 = 1024 children at the end.

OrlandoWoolf · 24/03/2015 22:58

AIBU to marry the man who killed my uncle because he wants to unite our 2 houses Grin

CremeEggThief · 24/03/2015 22:58

YABU. There are lots of Richard aficionados around and it's a way to feel part of history. I would go along if I lived nearer.

DocHollywood · 24/03/2015 23:00

Lol! Just a nutter I'm afraid.Grin I was at Bosworth Field for the quincentennial celebrations in 1985 and have been a fan of Rick's ever since.

RaisingSteam · 24/03/2015 23:00

We live quite near the battlefield. Believe me not much happens round here!

MintChocAddict · 24/03/2015 23:00

ssd Grin

Just to add I also found all the people standing outside the hospital when Prince G was born equally odd.

Just don't get it.

MintChocAddict · 24/03/2015 23:02

Ah doc x post Wink

ssd · 24/03/2015 23:04

oh! i stand corrected..i'm sure the person on the news yesterday said
Tudor

DocHollywood · 24/03/2015 23:06

Feel a bit sorry for Elizabeth of York having to marry Henry Tudor because it's possible he was the real murderer of her brothers, the princes in the tower.

OrlandoWoolf · 24/03/2015 23:06

So did he do it?

What happened to the Princes? A set up or guilty?

Seriouslyffs · 24/03/2015 23:10

I'd not followed it at all- I vaguely recall his bones being found in a car park and controversy over where to bury him, but I totally get the interest. It's a wonderful relief from shopping working and soaps.
