To find this odd?

At school drop off this morning a parent said to their reception child, "I love you like a fat kid loves cake".

Didn't think anything of it at time but as day gone on, it has stuck in my head and can't help but think it's odd and potentially damaging.

  1. I don't want to get fat, so does that mean if I don't eat cake, parent won't love me any more.
  2. it doesn't matter if I eat cake and get fat as that's how much parent loves me. (Obv parent would still love child, but is that what they want them thinking).

Plus whatever else it may make other children think.

Finally, surely love how much you love your child shouldn't be quantifiable.

Of course, at this point said child is thinking none of these things other than parent loves them.

I am totally over thinking this aren't I. Hmm

I now have River Deep, Mountain High running through my head...

I love you baby like a flower loves the spring
And I love you baby just like Tina loves to sing
And I love you baby like a school boy loves his pet
And I love you baby like a fit kid loves their cake

Odd thing to say though. I wonder if its from The Simpsons or something like that?

TwinkieTwinkle · 24/03/2015 12:33

Love it like a fat kid loves cupcakes is one I hear a lot.

Gatehouse77 · 24/03/2015 12:33

I agree it's odd but it's also a wrong correlation in my eyes. Not everybody's fat because they eat too much or even the 'wrong' food.

TheMoa · 24/03/2015 12:34

It's from a song apparently ( I Googled it!).

I say similar things to my children, they laugh.

SaucyJack · 24/03/2015 12:34

I don't think it's the most PC expression of love out there, but it's not damaging to the child's self-esteem.

Fat kids love cake a lot, let's be honest.

NancyRaygun · 24/03/2015 12:34

I think you are taking it waaaaaay too seriously! It might be a family joke. A private joke.

Tallulahhulahula · 24/03/2015 12:34

You've probably just overheard a family joke. Definitely overthinking!

Rosieliveson · 24/03/2015 12:35

It's a line from a song isn't it? Kanye west or 50cent or someone.
It's not a nice phrase IMO.

Pyjamasandwine · 24/03/2015 12:36

It's better than the ridiculous fb favourite 'I love you lots like jelly tots' that's fucking annoying.

And fat people usually do like cake too much. That's why they are fat. Grin

CatsCantTwerk · 24/03/2015 12:37

I think You are overthinking it. I think its quite funny and would have made me inwardly giggle.

MaxPepsi · 24/03/2015 12:40

Isn't it a song lyric or a quote from a film?

My DB and Nephew come out with random shit which to anyone else sounds like utter madness but they are quoting song lyrics, book passages and film quotes!

TwinkieTwinkle · 24/03/2015 12:40

Actually, come to think of it, my sister occasionally says the cupcake version I mentioned to my son.

WineAndChocolateyummy · 24/03/2015 12:56

Off to google funny song lyrics now. And stop thinking Smile

Grantaire · 24/03/2015 12:59

I have a fb friend who writes 'love you like a fat kid loves chocolate cake' on things. It's ridiculous but I don't overthink it.

Northumberlandlass · 24/03/2015 13:01

I tell DS I love him more than chips, cheese & chocolate I haven't put it on FB though It's true!

DoJo · 24/03/2015 13:01

Definitely overthinking it. For a start:

1) I don't want to get fat, so does that mean if I don't eat cake, parent won't love me any more.
2) it doesn't matter if I eat cake and get fat as that's how much parent loves me. (Obv parent would still love child, but is that what they want them thinking).

There is no reference to the child loving cake or being fat, so no reason at all for a child to correlate the parent's statement with anything to do with their cake consumption or otherwise.

None of this is relevant to what the parent says, which is basically the equivalent of 'I love you to the moon and back'. You wouldn't interpret this as 'If I don't become an astronaut and go to the moon and back, my parent won't love me' or 'It doesn't matter if I give up on my dreams of becoming an astronaut as my parent will still love me.' It's just a way of describing the magnitude of love that the parent feels. I have been known to quote an Earl King song in the same vein and I'm pretty sure my son isn't concerned that unless he can turn himself into gold I will stop loving him...Grin

nochocolateforlentteacake · 24/03/2015 13:03

Actually, I tell DS that I love him more than cheese too!

chickenfuckingpox · 24/03/2015 13:03

i think your over thinking a little i say to my son love you lots like chicken pox seriously people i HATE chicken pox!

Titsalinabumsquash · 24/03/2015 13:03

Yep, it's a 50 Cent song, in which he's banging on about would she love him in x,y,z scenarios and saying he loves her in different ways/amounts.

I once told my DS1 I loved him to the moon and back, sadly he'd already learnt solar systems and was sad that it wasn't further. BlushSad

SaucyJack · 24/03/2015 13:05

I don't love my kids more than cheese.

TheJiminyConjecture · 24/03/2015 13:06

It's a fifty cent lyric (which I now have in my head).

I think you're way over thinking it. But then I said that I was sweating like a weight watcher in a cake shop yesterday so as a family we're pretty laid back about cake related phrases

tallulahlah · 24/03/2015 13:06

I'm fat and I love cake Grin

I agree it's not a great message to give to your kids, that kids are fat cos they eat loads of cake. But I think you're over thinking it a little.

tallulahlah · 24/03/2015 13:08

"Finally, surely love how much you love your child shouldn't be quantifiable."

Of course it isn't to adults but kids like to hear how much you love them.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 24/03/2015 13:13

I sometimes say to dd "love you lots like jelly tots". Can't say she's ever eaten them but it sounds cute and doesn't mean I don't actually love her. And the cake thing is in that 50 cent song 21 questions

GingerLDN · 24/03/2015 15:05

It's 50 Cent. Love that song so don't find it weird but if I hadn't heard the song is probably think it was strange!
