To not want to work for 5p over minimum wage?

WhatsGoingOnEh · 23/03/2015 19:16

I went for an interview for a part-time retail job. The work would be fab, interesting and helpful and sociable, but the pay is £6.75 an hour - 5p above minimum wage.

AIBU to be put off by this?!

My goodness my mum is a care assistant and earns about that- and i believe that should be higher paid than retail

HermioneWeasley · 23/03/2015 19:39

What's your alternative? What skills and experience do you have that would enable you to earn more than NMW?

whatnoww · 23/03/2015 19:39

I doubt cleaners get paid twice that, at the moment presumably you are earning nothing. So £44 a day is a hell of a lot more!

Care workers probably get about the same, that's disgusting for what is expected of them

HattyMonkey · 23/03/2015 19:39

cupcakes care workers were an example I used earlier to point out that the op's shock at retail being so low paid is nothing compared to other professions. It is a crime that such an important job in our society pays so poorly.

HattyMonkey · 23/03/2015 19:41

I looked out if curiosity for cleaning jobs locally to me available now, all at or slightly above nmw.

cupcakesandapples · 23/03/2015 19:42

Very true hatty- i think its a sad reflection on society when we dont even value people like carers/tas etc enough that they earn at least a living wage.

Ludoole · 23/03/2015 19:45

I get minimum wage. My job includes among other things, cleaning up shit and changing wet pants/pads.. I also have to deal with variations of mood and frequently have to deal with anger directed at me. Theres a high risk of violent behaviour being aimed at me. All for £6.50 an hour!!!

HattyMonkey · 23/03/2015 19:46

This is going to get worse when those who claim tax credits are told to look for better paid work or fave sanctions, or told to ask for more hours if not full time at the moment. Retail and care are notorious for zero hour contracts, people will be stuck in a no win situation.

Littlemonstersrule · 23/03/2015 19:46

Why would shop work pay way over NMW? It takes no skill, jobs that pay much higher need skill and qualifications.

HattyMonkey · 23/03/2015 19:50

Ludoole I take my hat off to you (I had to wrestle the monkey) my best friend is a care worker I have seen her in tears, covered in bruises and so frustrated at the lack of support. However she I a truly commited carer 10 years down the line. The fact your profession is so poorly thought of by the establishment is something that needs addressing but while the owners of care homes are helped along by the government (whoever is on power) nothing will happen.

irretating · 23/03/2015 19:50

YANBU to want a job that pays more than minimum wage. YABU if you think you'll get one in retail.

HattyMonkey · 23/03/2015 19:52

Stupid phone and tiny keypad/crap eyesight scuse typos.

Ludoole · 23/03/2015 19:54

The person i care for is my dad. I get paid through direct payments.
Funnily enough i feel grateful as my fiance will soon need end of life care and for that i will have to give up my current caring job with dad and earn even less as i will only get carers allowance... Now carers allowance really is disgraceful!!!!

Ludoole · 23/03/2015 19:58

I meant grateful for minimum wage!!Angry

HattyMonkey · 23/03/2015 19:59

Carers allowance is a joke, the amount of money they save by loved ones doing the work, it is insulting. Then any money you could earn is capped. My blood pressure rises when I think of it and I am not even impacted by it. I am so sorry to hear about your Fiance Ludoole I did end of life for my Aunt 3 years ago and still feel honoured but also cross at the lack of help/support. Hospice at Home however were invaluable.

Ludoole · 23/03/2015 20:01

Thanks Hatty Flowers

BackforGood · 23/03/2015 20:03

As everyone else has said - NMW is the rate for working in retail. It's a job that isn't inherently unpleasant, or unsociable hours, or dangerous, yet it doesn't need any particular qualification, skill or experience. Hence, that's the going rate.
If you need money and don't have the qualifications to pay for better paid work, then it would seem sensible to take it.
If you can afford to turn your nose up at what is being offered, then don't take it.

HattyMonkey · 23/03/2015 20:04

Feel free to pm me if you ever need to to offload, you feel like you can't moan to other family but you might need a valve [flowers ] Wine]

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 23/03/2015 20:07

I followed your other thread about your dad, Ludoole, I'm so sorry to hear about your fiancé.

Sorry, What's, for the hijack. I suppose you'll have to weigh up, do the pros and cons and make your decision based on that.

Rubbish. Good customer service is a skill as is the more manual side of the job. It's bloody hard work I wouldn't do it if you promised me Robbie Williams covered in chocolate for 3 hours every Sunday

Notrevealingmyidentity · 23/03/2015 20:16

Depends entirely on how much you need and want the job in question.

HattyMonkey · 23/03/2015 20:16

Needs you are right but sadly while while swathes of society believe this you are banging your head against a brick wall (built by poorly paid apprentices or self employed sub contractors)

SurlyCue · 23/03/2015 20:20

There are a fair few up and down the country who would be ecstatic to only have £10 a day childcare costs! £44 a day is nothing to be sniffed at if youre not earning.

arethereanyleftatall · 23/03/2015 20:21

Jobs aren't all about money once you have kids. I teach swimming one evening a week, and a babysitter puts my dc to bed. I pay her all my wage. Im happy with that as I enjoy it.

NeedABumChange · 23/03/2015 20:29

It pays so little as you are obviously interviewing for crap shops where anyone could do the job. I've worked retail, yes it can be a slog but it's piss easy.

If you want more money with retail then go to upmarket shops. You'll get around £10 an hour plus commission. When I worked there full time my commission could be up to £600 a week. It's lots easier than the high street to, much less stock out to tidy.
