My ds is currently v into Robin Hood, has created fab Lego scenes, read books, listened to audio CDs etc, and is asking to watch a film of it. He watched Disney one, but wants a "proper version". He's seen the Harry Potter films and The Hobbit and Lord of The Rings. Can anyone recommend an appropriate Robin Hood film for him?

How on earth does using an exclamation mark, imply 'rattiness'?

It's just that, an exclamation mark - punctuation used to indicate strong feelings, not anger or annoyance (although they clearly can be used in this way)

Enb76 · 20/03/2015 12:29

Ah but squoosh, I so had a crush on Christian Slater - he made that film for me.

DamnBamboo · 20/03/2015 12:31

I have come to conclusion squoosh, that ability to comprehend text and punctuation is poor. That or you like to argue.

There is no other explanation for your inferences, or your responses.

squoosh · 20/03/2015 12:32

Yeah, 'cos rape not's dark at all is it! Lot's of things way worse than being raped.

Holy shit! Have I fallen down a rabbit hole on this thread?

No, sadly you haven't fallen down a hole.

I don't have an 8 year old, I don't need to worry about the films that 8 year old watch. The OP (remember her?) has stated that her son has watched the LOTR films. That would imply she has made the decision that she is okay with her child watching those films. She wanted feedback on Prince of Thieves and letting her know that Prince of Thieves is a 'lighter' film than LOTR is fact she might find helpful.

TwinkieTwinkle · 20/03/2015 12:32

Bypassing all the arguing... OP, my 8 year old loves Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Loves all the LOTR and Harry Potter films as well, I'm sure your boy will love it Smile

squoosh · 20/03/2015 12:33

Duh!
This is difficult for you clearly so I will write few words, and very clearly.

Rude and ratty if you'd prefer?

DamnBamboo · 20/03/2015 12:33

I don't agree it's lighter at all.
Any scenes of actual or suggested violence, in addition to other violence that both films portray, is not light.

DamnBamboo · 20/03/2015 12:34

Neither squoosh. Just not willing to be drawn into your ill-conceived arguments and/or allow for your ridiculous assumptions about my views to go unchallenged.

squoosh · 20/03/2015 12:35

'Ah but squoosh, I so had a crush on Christian Slater - he made that film for me.'

My friend had scrapbooks and scrapbooks full of Christian Slater cuttings when we were about 13. She sent them off to be autographed and never saw them again! Grin

DamnBamboo · 20/03/2015 12:35

suggested sexual violence that should say in 12:33 post

crazykat · 20/03/2015 12:35

I watched it at about 8 years old and loved it.

I also loved the Mel Brooks Robin Hood men in tights at that age and still do, in fact I might try and get the dvd version for dd and ds to watch, if I tried to show them my video version they'd wonder what it was Grin.

squoosh · 20/03/2015 12:36

'Duh! This is difficult for you clearly so I will write few words, and very clearly.'

That's not rude? I think I'll add fib telling to your list of transgressions.

ScrappyMalloy · 20/03/2015 12:37

My youngest watched it at nine, and the rape scene went right over his head. He just thought the sheriff was trying to get a kiss and a cuddle from Marion, which he thought was outrageous , and cheered Robin on to victory.

He was very excited that the sheriff was a very young-looking Snape, though.

BiddyPop · 20/03/2015 12:44

Does anyone know where I might be able to see the "Robin, the Hooded Man" series? I know Clannad did the music for it. But I can never find it anywhere to see it again.

Thanks in Advance!!

Enb76 · 20/03/2015 12:48

The Adventures of Robin of Sherwood online

BiddyPop · 20/03/2015 12:53

That's the one guys!! Thank you so much!!

Off to use a voucher I got on Amazon, and prep myself for a long Saturday in peace next weekend (DD going on a trip as a visiting club to Belfast, DH accompanying her, so I get a long day HOME ALONE!!) - and now can do it in swooning mode Grin

SmellsLikeSurgicalSpirit · 20/03/2015 12:57

I let my DC watch Prince Of Thieves at 8. They loved it and "I'm going to cut your heart out with a spoon!" is still a favourite joking threat.

However, I am somewhat lax having parents who allowed me to watch Alien when I wad 10/11 and a husband who comes from a country which generally says bof to UK film ratings.

Plus it has Morgan Freeman, Brian Blessed Grin Sean Connery being Scottish as usual and Christian Slater in it. Alan Rickman is the best Sherrif of Nottingham, fact.

It helps if you like Bryan Adams.

momb · 20/03/2015 12:59

Have a look at Robin Hood, 1991, starring Patrick Bergen and Uma Thurman. It was rather eclipsed by Prince of Thieves at the time, but it didn't have wicked witches and acrobatics among the trees so may in fact be truer to the original legend.
I think it's the better of the two, though less of a Blockbuster altogether.

littlehouseinthebigwoods · 20/03/2015 13:00

How about getting him to watch Tony Robinson's classic cbbc maid Marion and her merry men? I'm sure it's available on YouTube... fun, and educational as well Grin.

My 8year old ds doesn't even like the tension in toy story 2 so fortunately this kind of decision is a way off for us, but my instinct is the same as damnbamboo . However you know your son better than anyone else!

Allthenamesareusedup · 20/03/2015 13:01

Woops, didn't mean to start such controversy. Really do appreciate all the advice though. He watched the LOTR with his dad, and HP was allowed because he had read the books so knew what would happen anyway. RH is on me, I am the only one who has seen PoT!!! As i said will start with EF version, and see what I think of PoT these days.

Another one singing the praises of Robin of Sherwood, such a good series, and Michael Praed is very easy on the eye. Wink Jason Connery - not so much.

Also yy to littlehouse, Maid Marion and her Merry Men was fabulous, it still makes me laugh now.

FriendlyLadybird · 20/03/2015 13:08

truer to the original legend

Well, the Robin Hood 'legend' was made up of a whole load of stories, some featuring magic and some not, and others based on other figures such as Hereward the Wake. He wasn't always in Sherwood either.

ScrappyMalloy · 20/03/2015 13:11

On pancake day, we always have the Pancake Day you tube video from Maid Marion and Her Merry Men on. A Lot...

SenecaFalls · 20/03/2015 13:16

Does anyone remember the 1950s TV series with Richard Greene?
